IPTV for Roku: Licensed Live TV Services Compared (Oct 2026)

Short answer: the IPTV that works properly on a Roku is a licensed live TV service with its own Roku app. In October 2026 that means Frndly TV from $8.99 a month at the cheap end, Sling's new $19.99 Essentials and Select tiers, Philo at $25, and the full cable replacements: YouTube TV at $82.99, DirecTV around $89.99 and Hulu + Live TV, now $99.99 because it bundles Disney+ and ESPN Select. The catch most comparisons miss is the screen limit. Sling Orange allows one stream at a time and Hulu's standard plan two at home, so the "cheapest" service can turn out to be the wrong one for a family with three Rokus.

Here's the whole comparison first, then what each service is like on a Roku, and how to pick.

The comparison table

Service (Roku app) Monthly price, Oct 2026 Streams at once DVR Local channels / sport
Frndly TV $8.99 Basic (SD), $10.99 Classic, $12.99 Premium 1 / 2 / 4 Unlimited on Classic and Premium No locals, no sport
Sling Essentials or Select From $19.99 each, $34.99 together 1 (Essentials), 3 (Select) Included Few locals; limited sport
Philo $25 Essential, $33 Bundle+ 3 Unlimited, kept 1 year No locals, no live sport channels
Sling Orange / Blue $45.99 each, $60.99 both 1 / 3 / 4 Included ESPN on Orange; some locals on Blue in big markets
YouTube TV $82.99 ($59.99 for first 2 months) 3 (unlimited at home with 4K Plus) Unlimited Locals in most areas; broad sport
Fubo (Pro) About $85-$90, varies by area Varies by plan Cloud DVR, recordings kept 9 months Locals in most areas; sport-heavy
DirecTV (Entertainment) $89.99 (promos lower) Unlimited at home Unlimited Locals; regional sports on higher tiers
Hulu + Live TV $99.99, or $109.99 ad-free Hulu 2 at home (unlimited on upgrade) Unlimited, kept 9 months Locals in most areas; ESPN Select and Disney+ included

Under $35: the light bundles

Frndly TV is the cheapest paid live TV on Roku and makes no attempt to be more than it is: about 50 channels built around the three Hallmark networks, A&E, History, Lifetime, INSP, UPtv and the Weather Channel. The $8.99 Basic tier is standard definition on one screen, which looks soft on a big TV, so most people will want Classic at $10.99. A 72-hour look-back lets you start shows you missed.

Sling Essentials and Select are 2026's cut-down Sling plans at $19.99 each. They're the cheapest way into Sling's app and DVR. Check the channel list for your area carefully, because the split between the two isn't intuitive.

Philo costs $25 for 70-plus entertainment channels with unlimited DVR that keeps recordings for a year and three streams at once. Bundle+ at $33 adds HBO Max Basic with Ads, AMC+ and discovery+, which is a lot for $8 extra if you'd pay for any of them. What Philo doesn't have is live sport channels or local news.

None of the three includes local broadcast channels. On a Roku TV, an antenna fills that gap for free; on a stick, you'd need a network tuner or a bigger service. Our guide to cheap legal live TV has more ways to keep the total under $20.

The full cable replacements

YouTube TV at $82.99 is the default pick for most households: over 100 channels, locals in most markets, unlimited DVR and three streams. In 2026 it also sells genre plans, including a Sports + News plan at $71.99 and a Sports plan at $64.99, which are worth a look if you never watch entertainment cable. The 4K Plus add-on ($9.99) gives unlimited streams at home and 4K on selected sport.

Hulu + Live TV has climbed to $99.99 because it now packs in Disney+ and ESPN Select along with the Hulu library. If you'd pay for those anyway, the live channels are relatively cheap. If you wouldn't, it's the most expensive way onto this list, and two home screens is tight.

DirecTV at $89.99 for Entertainment is the one to look at if you need a regional sports network, since it still carries more of them than rivals. Unlimited home streams are a real plus for big households. Its genre packs, such as MySports at $64.99, undercut the main tiers.

Fubo leans hardest into sport, with many games in 4K at no extra charge. Prices vary by zip code, so check yours at sign-up.

Sling Orange and Blue sit in between at $45.99 each. Orange has ESPN but only one stream; Blue has more news and entertainment and three streams.

Sport-only add-ons that run on Roku

Plenty of people searching "IPTV for Roku" only want games. Every major rights holder has a Roku app, so you can often skip a bundle entirely:

  • ESPN: the standalone ESPN Unlimited plan is $31.99 a month; ESPN Select is cheaper and comes with Hulu + Live TV.
  • Fox One: $19.99 a month for Fox's broadcast and cable sport, news and entertainment.
  • Peacock Premium: $12.99 a month since 17 September 2026, carrying NBC sport including the NBA.
  • Paramount+, Prime Video and league passes such as NBA League Pass and MLB.TV.

Blackout rules still apply on all of them. A league pass won't show the game your local station is broadcasting.

Roku-specific things to check

Screen limits count every Roku in the house. Three Rokus and a phone during the Sunday games is four streams. Check the table above against your real peak, not your average.

4K needs a 4K Roku. YouTube TV's 4K Plus and Fubo's 4K games play in 4K only on a 4K-capable Roku with a 4K TV. An HD stick will show HD.

The Live TV guide. Roku's home menu has a Live TV entry with a channel grid built mainly from The Roku Channel's free lineup and, on Roku TVs, the antenna. Paid services keep their own guide inside their app; don't expect your YouTube TV channels to appear in Roku's grid.

Home area rules travel with the Roku. Services that carry local channels tie your account to a home area. YouTube TV, for example, sets it from where you first sign in on a living-room device, and limits how often you can change it. Taking a Roku Stick to a holiday rental usually works for national channels, but you'll see that area's locals, or none, rather than your own. Set the account up on the Roku that stays at home first.

Older Rokus lose apps. Live TV apps are often the first to drop support for old hardware. If a service's sign-up page lists supported Roku models, check yours under Settings → System → About.

Wired beats wireless. For live sport, a Roku with Ethernet, such as the Roku Ultra or most Roku TVs, removes the most common cause of stutter. Which Roku hardware handles live TV best is covered in our IPTV Pro on Roku guide.

Paying through Roku, and cancelling

Many services offer to bill you through your Roku account when you sign up on the TV. It's convenient: one bill, and you can sign up with the remote. Two things to know.

  • Cancel where you subscribed. A subscription started through Roku is cancelled through Roku, either at my.roku.com under subscriptions, or on the Roku by highlighting the app, pressing the * button and choosing Manage subscription. Cancelling inside the service's website won't stop Roku's billing.
  • Promotions may differ. Some introductory offers only apply when you sign up directly on the service's website. Compare before you click Subscribe on the TV.

Trials are usually short: Philo and Frndly advertise seven days, DirecTV five. Use them during a weekend when you'd actually be watching.

Which one for which household

If you are... Start with
One person, no sport, tight budget Frndly Classic or Philo, plus free channels
A family with several Rokus DirecTV or YouTube TV with 4K Plus (unlimited home streams)
Following a local pro team DirecTV (regional sports networks), or the team's own direct-to-consumer app
Already paying for Disney+ and ESPN Hulu + Live TV
Mostly NFL and college football YouTube TV, or a Roku TV antenna plus ESPN and Fox One
Watches only news and a few cable shows Sling Blue or a $19.99 Sling tier

What a year actually costs

Monthly prices hide how far apart these services really are. Here's the same list at regular prices over twelve months, before taxes, regional sports fees and any introductory discount.

Service and plan 12 months Per stream allowed
Frndly Classic ($10.99) $131.88 About $66 a stream
Philo Essential ($25) $300 $100 a stream
Sling Orange & Blue ($60.99) $731.88 About $183 a stream
YouTube TV ($82.99) $995.88 About $332 a stream
YouTube TV + 4K Plus ($92.98) $1,115.76 Unlimited at home
DirecTV Entertainment ($89.99) $1,079.88 Unlimited at home
Hulu + Live TV ($99.99) $1,199.88 About $600 a stream (2 at home)

Two things stand out. First, a household that genuinely needs four simultaneous streams pays less per screen on DirecTV or YouTube TV with 4K Plus than on almost anything else, despite the headline price. Second, Hulu + Live TV only looks reasonable if you were going to pay separately for Disney+ and ESPN; strip those out and it's the poorest value per stream on the list.

All of these figures assume you never change plan, which few people do. Seasonal sport fans can save more by pausing or cancelling between seasons. Most of these services let you cancel any time and resubscribe later, and a football-only household that keeps YouTube TV from September to early February pays roughly half the annual figure. Our guide to pausing and switching subscriptions covers the rules for each.

Where IPTV player apps fit

The other half of the Roku search results are store listings for player apps: IPTV Smarters HD, Xtream IPTV Player, IPTV Player: Watch Live TV and similar. Each states that it includes no channels. They play a playlist or Xtream-style login you already have, and they're only as legal as that source.

They make sense if a licensed provider gives you a playlist, or if you run a home tuner or media server that outputs one. They don't make sense as a way to watch the channels in the table above: those services don't issue playlists, and an unlicensed seller who offers "all of them for $15" is exactly the kind of source Roku removes apps for. Our Roku live TV channels guide covers the free layer and player apps in more detail, and IPTV on Roku explains why nothing outside the Roku store will install.
