Short answer: you can get genuinely useful live TV legally for under $20 a month, and often for nothing. Frndly TV starts at $8.99, Sling Select costs $19.99 and includes Fox One app access, Sling's day passes start at $4.99, and an aerial plus free FAST apps cost nothing monthly. What you can't get legally for $10 is every channel and every sport. The catch with cheap "everything" IPTV offers is that they're unlicensed, and they tend to fail, disappear or cost you more than you save.
At a glance
Cheap live TV, legally
| Free | Aerial, FAST apps, network news apps |
| Under $10 | Frndly TV Basic ($8.99) |
| $10-$20 | ESPN Select, Peacock, Sling Select, Fox One |
| One-off events | Sling day pass from $4.99 |
| Avoid | $10 "all channels, all sports" deals |
Start with what's free
Before paying anything, it's worth seeing how much is available at no monthly cost. For many households it's most of what they watch.
An aerial for local channels. A one-off $30 to $100 antenna picks up ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS and dozens of subchannels in most US metro areas, in better picture quality than most streams, with no delay. Most NFL games are on these channels. Our guide to local channels without cable explains how to check reception.
FAST services. Pluto TV, Tubi, The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, Plex and Xumo Play offer hundreds of free, ad-supported live channels: news, classic series, films, reality shows and some sport. Our free live TV apps guide compares them.
Free news streams. ABC News Live, CBS News 24/7, NBC News Now, and many local stations' own news streams are free in their apps.
Licensed live TV under $20 a month
US list prices as of September 2026, before tax. All are month to month with no contract.
| Service | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Frndly TV | $8.99-$12.99 | About 50 family and classic-TV channels |
| Peacock Premium | $13 | Live NBC, Sunday Night Football, Premier League |
| ESPN Select | $14 | Many ESPN streaming events (no linear ESPN) |
| Sling Select | $19.99 | Fox News, FS1, NFL Network, FX + Fox One access |
| Fox One | $19.99 | Local Fox, Fox News, FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network |
| Fubo Latino | $19.99 | 50+ Spanish-language channels |
| Sling day passes | $4.99-$14.99 | 1, 3 or 7 days of selected channels |
None of these is a full cable replacement on its own, but one or two of them plus an aerial covers a lot of ground for well under $40.
Which cheap option fits which viewer
Entertainment and family viewing. Frndly TV (Hallmark, classic TV, game shows) or Philo at $25 if you can stretch slightly: around 70 channels including A&E, AMC, HGTV, Food Network and Discovery, with unlimited DVR.
News and some sport. Sling Select at $19.99 includes Fox News, FS1, NFL Network, FX and National Geographic, and comes with access to the Fox One app, which adds your local Fox station and Big Ten Network.
ESPN on a budget. ESPN Select, at $14 a month from 17 September 2026, carries a large share of ESPN's streaming events but not the linear ESPN channels, which need ESPN Unlimited at $32.
NBC sport and Premier League. Peacock Premium, $13 a month from September 2026, includes live NBC programming, Sunday Night Football and the Premier League matches NBC streams.
Spanish-language TV. Fubo Latino at $19.99 a month covers more than 50 Spanish-language channels.
Day passes: pay only for the big game
If you only want live TV for occasional events, a pass can be far cheaper than a monthly plan.
Sling sells a 1 Day Pass for $4.99, a 3 Day Pass for $9.99 and a 7 Day Pass for $14.99, with no recurring charge. That covers a playoff weekend, a tournament or a single must-see match on the channels the pass includes. Check exactly which channels a pass covers before buying; it isn't every Sling channel.
The same principle works with monthly services too: subscribe for the month of a tournament and cancel afterwards. Most licensed services let you cancel online in a few clicks.
Four cheap stacks that work
Combining free and paid sources is usually cheaper than any single big package.
| Viewer | Stack | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Light viewer | Aerial + FAST apps | $0 |
| Entertainment | Aerial + Frndly TV Classic | $10.99 |
| News and NFL | Aerial + Sling Select (with Fox One) | $19.99 |
| Football fan | Aerial + Peacock + ESPN Select | $27 |
Compare those with a full live-TV package at $82.99 to $89.99 a month. Our cheapest way to watch live TV guide goes deeper into combinations by viewing habit.
What cheap plans leave out
Knowing the gaps in advance avoids disappointment on the first big night.
TNT, TBS and CNN. None of the sub-$20 options carries them. They're on Sling Orange and Blue at $45.99, and on the full packages. Some TNT Sports events also stream on HBO Max, depending on the plan.
Regional sports networks. Local MLB, NBA and NHL coverage usually needs a full package, a team's own streaming service or a league pass, and blackout rules still apply. Our regional sports network guide covers the options.
DVR and screens. Cheaper tiers often limit recording hours and simultaneous streams. Frndly TV Basic, for example, allows one screen in SD; Sling Select allows three streams and 50 hours of DVR.
Premium channels. HBO, Starz and similar networks are always extra, whichever plan you choose.
None of these gaps is a reason to pay for a full package all year. It's a reason to add the right service for the months you need it.
The $10 "everything" trap
Search for cheap IPTV and most results offer something else: thousands of channels, every sports package and a film library for $10 to $15 a month, often with a discount for paying a year upfront.
They aren't licensed. The rights to NFL, NBA, Premier League or UFC coverage cost broadcasters billions. A service charging $10 for all of it isn't paying for any of it. It's re-streaming captured feeds.
They cost more than they seem. Services are blocked and shut down regularly, often during the biggest events, when demand is highest. Annual payments vanish with them. Payment by gift card, crypto or personal transfer can't be disputed.
They carry real risks. Selling them is a felony in the US under the Protecting Lawful Streaming Act of 2020, viewers in Italy have been fined since 2025, and the apps involved are a common route for malware. Amazon now blocks Fire TV apps it identifies as providing unlicensed content.
Our guide to spotting an IPTV scam lists the warning signs in detail.
More ways to pay less
Use introductory offers deliberately. Services often discount the first month or first year for new customers. Take the offer, but note when it ends.
Rotate rather than stack. Keep one or two services at a time and switch with the seasons: an ESPN plan through college football, Peacock for the Premier League, and so on.
Check existing bundles. Some mobile and broadband plans include a streaming service, and Disney's bundles of ESPN, Disney+ and Hulu cost less than the parts.
Choose cheaper devices. A $30 to $50 stick is plenty for a mainstream service. Save the box for the main TV if you need Ethernet.
Use a free trial as a test, not a habit. Trials are useful for checking channels and performance on your own TV. Our free trial guide lists which services offer them.
