Short answer: on Roku, live TV comes through official channels from the Roku Store: free ad-supported services such as The Roku Channel's live guide, and paid live-TV services such as YouTube TV, Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DirecTV and Philo. The catch is that Roku doesn't let you install apps from outside its store, so if a service has no Roku channel, there's no workaround worth trying.

How live TV works on Roku
Roku runs its own operating system, not Android. Every app, which Roku calls a channel, comes from the Roku Store and has been approved by Roku. The old "private channel" codes were discontinued, and developer mode exists for developers testing their own work, not for installing other people's apps.
That sounds restrictive, and it is. But it also means the live-TV channels that are available on Roku tend to work well, update automatically and stay put. Our IPTV on Roku guide explains the platform's limits in detail. This article is the practical other half: what you can actually watch, and what it costs.
The Live TV hub. Recent Roku software puts a Live TV entry on the home screen menu, which opens a channel grid drawing on The Roku Channel's free lineup and, on Roku TVs, the antenna input. It's the simplest place to start.
Free live channels that work well
Free ad-supported streaming TV, usually shortened to FAST, has grown into a serious source of live channels. None of these needs a subscription, and all are in the Roku Store.
The Roku Channel. Roku's own service, built in on current devices. Its live guide carries hundreds of free channels across news, film, sport highlights, cooking and classic TV, and Roku adds new ones most months. You can browse the grid, jump to a channel number or filter by category.
Pluto TV. Paramount's free service, with a traditional channel guide and many themed channels built around single shows.
Tubi. Fox's service, best known for on-demand films but with a growing live section including local news in many US markets.
Plex and news networks. Plex's free live TV adds a further few hundred channels, and several news networks run their own free live streams.
Broadcaster apps. Outside the US, the main public broadcasters' players, where they exist on Roku in your country, carry their live channels legally and usually for free (with a TV licence where one is required).
What free services don't carry is the premium material: most live sport, the big cable networks in real time, and first-run shows. For those you need a paid service.
Paid live-TV services compared
These are the main US live-TV streaming services available as Roku channels. Prices are base plans as listed in September 2026 and change frequently; regional sports and add-ons cost extra.
| Service | Base price (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Philo | $25/month | Entertainment channels, no sport |
| Sling TV (Orange or Blue) | $45.99/month | A cheaper, pick-your-base bundle |
| YouTube TV | $82.99/month | Broad lineup, unlimited DVR |
| Fubo (Pro) | $88.99/month | Sport-heavy households |
| Hulu + Live TV | $89.99/month | Includes Disney+ and ESPN+ content |
| DirecTV (Entertainment) | $89.99/month | Regional sports networks |
Try before you commit. Most offer a free trial or a first-month discount. Test during the time you actually watch, on the Roku you actually use, rather than trusting a channel list.
Watch for carriage disputes. Roku and service providers occasionally fall out over terms, and a channel can briefly disappear from new installs. It has happened before; existing subscribers usually keep access while it's resolved.
Check simultaneous streams. Base plans differ on how many screens can watch at once. If several people watch live sport in different rooms, that limit matters more than channel count.
Local channels and antennas
The cheapest way to watch local broadcast channels on a Roku TV is still an aerial. Roku TVs have a built-in tuner: connect an antenna, choose the Live TV or Antenna TV input, scan, and your local channels appear in the same guide as the free streaming ones.
Roku streaming sticks and boxes don't have tuners. For those, local channels come through a paid service that carries them in your area, or through a network tuner that streams antenna TV to apps on the Roku.
Reception depends on your distance from transmitters. Free coverage maps from broadcasters and regulators show what you can expect before you buy an antenna.
Sport on Roku
Sport is where people most often go looking for "IPTV", and it's worth knowing that almost every major rights holder has an official Roku channel. League passes, network apps such as ESPN, and dedicated services such as Peacock, Paramount+ and DAZN (where available) all run on Roku.
Blackouts still apply. A league's own streaming pass generally doesn't show games being broadcast locally or nationally in your area; those are on the local or national broadcaster instead. Our sport guides, such as watching the NFL, set out who holds which rights.
Unlicensed sports streams don't have Roku channels, and apps promising them tend to be either removed or simply non-functional. They are also the category most associated with payment scams.
Playlist players on Roku
A few player channels in the Roku Store accept an M3U playlist or a login that you supply, for example from a licensed provider or a home network tuner. They're more limited than their Android equivalents.
Expect fewer features. Guide support, catch-up and multiple playlists vary widely, and Roku's store rules mean some features common elsewhere simply aren't offered.
Expect some channels to fail. Roku's player supports a narrower set of stream formats than Android boxes. A stream that works on a phone may not play on Roku, and no setting fixes that.
Read the reviews, then the privacy terms. A player only needs your playlist address. Be cautious of any that ask for much more.
If your provider depends on a player app that isn't on Roku, the realistic answer is a different device rather than a workaround.
Making live TV run smoothly
Use a wired connection where possible. The Roku Ultra has an Ethernet port, and many Roku TVs do too. Live streams have little buffer, so wired connections make the biggest difference during big events.
Restart after updates. Settings → System → Power → System restart clears memory without losing anything.
Keep only channels you use. Removing unused channels speeds up the home screen on older, lower-memory models.
Check the device's age. Very old Roku models stop receiving channel updates, and live-TV apps are often the first to drop support. If a service stops loading on an old stick, that's usually why.
Quick answers
Can I watch live TV free on Roku? Yes. The Roku Channel, Pluto TV, Tubi and Plex all carry free, ad-supported live channels, and Roku TVs can add local channels with an antenna.
What is the cheapest paid live-TV service on Roku? Philo, at about $25 a month in September 2026, though it carries no sport. Sling TV is the cheapest option with sport channels.
Does YouTube TV work on Roku? Yes, as an official Roku channel.
Can I add an IPTV app that isn't in the Roku Store? Not in practice. Roku ended private channels and developer mode isn't meant for installing third-party apps.
Do Roku sticks get local channels with an antenna? No. Only Roku TVs have built-in tuners. Sticks need a paid service or a network tuner.
Why won't my playlist play on Roku? Roku supports fewer stream formats than Android devices, so some streams won't play in any Roku player.
Is live TV on Roku legal? Everything in the Roku Store is reviewed and the major services are licensed. The legal question arises with where a playlist comes from, not with the Roku itself.
