Here's the question most people are really asking: can I get Channels TV, Joy News or Citizen TV on my TV in Houston or Atlanta without paying a stranger on WhatsApp? Usually, yes. Africa's big news broadcasters stream live on their own YouTube channels for free, and Nollywood has two licensed US subscription apps that cost less than $10 a month. What you can't get here is the DStv-style bouquet you remember from home. MultiChoice, now owned by Canal+, doesn't sell DStv or Showmax in the US, so anyone offering "full DStv in America" is selling something they don't have the rights to.

Why there's no single African package
Most of the old search results for this topic are trade news from 2006 and 2007, when start-ups such as Africast promised one subscription with 30 or 40 channels from 25 countries. Those services are gone. The model was hard to make work: each broadcaster had to be signed separately, US rights to imported films and football were rarely theirs to give, and diaspora audiences were spread across dozens of languages.
What replaced it is less tidy but cheaper. Broadcasters stream their own news live, because reach matters more to them than a small licence fee. Films and series went to on-demand apps. Big sports rights went to whoever holds them in the US, which is usually ESPN, Fox, Peacock or Paramount+, not an African channel.
The big US live TV bundles haven't filled the gap either. Their international add-ons are built around South Asian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and a handful of other languages. If one particular African channel matters to you, check the current add-on lists on Sling and DirecTV before paying, but don't expect a Nigerian or Kenyan tier.
Nigeria
Nigeria is the best-served country for viewers in the US, thanks to its news channels and Nollywood.
- News: Channels Television, Arise News and TVC News all run live streams on their official YouTube channels and websites. Arise also targets an international audience directly.
- Nollywood: IROKOtv is the oldest licensed Nollywood subscription service, with a catalogue of more than 5,000 titles. Its US pricing has been listed at $9.99 a month, $24.99 for three months or $89.99 a year (late-2025 figures, so confirm at checkout). Netflix has a "Nigerian Movies & TV" row, and Prime Video carries a smaller Nollywood selection.
- Free films: producer-run YouTube channels such as IBAKATV and Nolly Plus TV post full-length films officially.
Africa Magic, the big Nollywood entertainment brand, is a DStv channel family. It isn't licensed for US distribution, so its shows tend to reach the US later, through the apps above.
Ghana
Ghana's broadcasters lean heavily on YouTube. Joy News (Multimedia Group), TV3 and UTV regularly stream live or post full programmes shortly after broadcast on their official channels. Morning shows and the evening news are the most reliable live slots, and coverage of elections and big national events usually streams in full.
For films, "Ghallywood" titles turn up on Demand Africa and on the free FAST channels listed below. Expect less depth than Nollywood.
Kenya and East Africa
Kenya's big three, Citizen TV (Royal Media Services), NTV (Nation Media Group) and KTN, all have large official YouTube channels with live streams of their news bulletins. Swahili-language programmes, including Citizen's evening news, are usually available too, sometimes as a separate stream.
The usual exception is football. English Premier League rights in Kenya belong to pay-TV operators, and those rights don't extend to the US. In the US, the Premier League is on NBC and Peacock. Our Premier League in the USA guide sets out the 2026-27 options.
For French-speaking Africa, TV5MONDE's free streaming platform carries African films and series, and francophone news streams from broadcasters' own sites.
| Country | Free live news (official YouTube/web) | Films and series | Not available in the US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | Channels TV, Arise News, TVC News | IROKOtv, Netflix, Demand Africa | Africa Magic (DStv) |
| Ghana | Joy News, TV3, UTV | Demand Africa, FAST channels | DStv and GOtv bouquets |
| Kenya | Citizen TV, NTV, KTN News | Netflix (selected), Showmax titles later elsewhere | Showmax, local Premier League |
| South Africa | SABC News, eNCA streams | Netflix SA originals | DStv, SuperSport |
Lineups and live-streaming policies change. A channel might stream the news but not a licensed soap, or stop live streaming during a rights dispute. If a stream disappears, check the broadcaster's own website before assuming it's gone for good.
Paid and free apps for films and series
If you want something more like a channel than a news bulletin, this is the licensed shortlist.
| Service | What it is | Price (last listed) | TV devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| IROKOtv | Nollywood on demand, 5,000+ titles | $9.99/mo, $89.99/yr | Roku, Samsung, LG, casting |
| Demand Africa | Pan-African films and series | $6.99/mo, 7-day trial | Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV |
| Nolly Africa HD | Free ad-supported linear channel | Free | Local Now, Plex, DistroTV, Whale TV+ |
| AfroLandTV | Free African and Caribbean films | Free | Apps on major platforms |
| Netflix | Nigerian and South African originals | From $8.99/mo with ads | Everything |
My pick for most households is to start free. Use the YouTube news streams plus a FAST channel for a couple of weeks, then add IROKOtv or Demand Africa only if you run out of things to watch. Paying for both rarely makes sense, as the catalogues overlap more than you'd expect. If FAST channels are new to you, our explainer on free streaming TV channels covers how they work.
Putting it all on one TV
The fiddly part is that your African TV now lives in three places: YouTube, one or two apps, and a FAST platform. A few habits make it feel like one service:
- Pick a streaming device that has every app. Roku, Fire TV and Google TV all carry YouTube, IROKOtv, Demand Africa and the FAST apps. Check older smart TVs individually.
- Subscribe to the official YouTube channels, and turn on notifications for the ones you want live. YouTube's Subscriptions tab then works as a rough channel guide, with live streams at the top.
- Pin the apps you use to the first row of the home screen, in the order you use them.
- Allow for the time difference. Lagos is six hours ahead of New York in winter, Nairobi eight. The main evening news goes out mid-afternoon on the East Coast, so catch it on replay if you're at work.
A 1080p stream needs about 5 to 8 Mbps, so bandwidth won't be the problem on a typical US connection.
What the "African IPTV" sellers are offering
Search this topic and you'll find sellers promising "1,000+ African channels including DStv, SuperSport and Africa Magic" for $60 to $100 a year. Since those channels aren't licensed for the US, the seller doesn't have the rights. They're retransmitting decoder feeds.
The trouble starts in ways that have nothing to do with law. Streams drop during the matches you paid for, because those are exactly the feeds rights holders work to take down. The seller wants payment by Zelle, Cash App or crypto, and disappears before renewal. And the "box" that comes with it is often an unbranded Android device that doesn't get security updates.
Before you pay anyone, read our checklist on how to spot an IPTV scam. For the legal background, is IPTV legal in the US explains where the line sits for viewers as well as sellers. If you mainly want cheap live TV for the rest of the household, cheap IPTV that's actually legal lists options under $20.

IROKOtv has the biggest dedicated Nollywood catalogue, last listed at $9.99 a month. Demand Africa is cheaper and covers more countries.
