Search for an "IPTV add-on for Kodi" and you'll get two very different kinds of answer mixed together. One kind is the official add-ons that come from Kodi's own repository and play TV you're entitled to. The other is third-party add-ons from outside repositories that promise hundreds of free channels. They install the same way. They're not the same thing at all.
Short answer: the IPTV add-on most people need is PVR IPTV Simple Client, which is free, made by Team Kodi and plays a playlist from a provider you already use. Kodi's official repository also has 24 other live TV clients, including ones for Pluto TV, HDHomeRun tuners and Tvheadend servers. Third-party "live TV" add-ons are where the trouble is. Kodi's own rule of thumb: if an add-on offers something free that you'd normally pay for, it's almost certainly using pirated feeds.

The three things called an "IPTV add-on"
PVR clients. These connect Kodi's built-in TV section (channels, grid guide, recordings) to a source of live TV. That source might be a playlist URL, a network tuner in your house, or a specific TV service. They live under Add-ons → PVR clients and come from Kodi's repository.
Video add-ons for a service. These sit under Videos → Add-ons and open one service's catalogue, such as YouTube, Plex or a broadcaster's catch-up player. Some offer live streams. A few can feed their channels into the TV guide through IPTV Manager.
Third-party "live TV" add-ons. Installed from a repository you add by typing a web address into Kodi's file manager. They scrape or relay channel streams from elsewhere. Most of the "best IPTV add-on" lists you'll find are made up of these, alongside a VPN affiliate link.
Kodi itself only vouches for the first two, and only when they come from its own repository.
Official live TV add-ons, by what you have
Kodi 21 "Omega" lists 25 PVR clients in its repository. Most target a particular piece of hardware or a European service, so here's how to find the one that matches your setup.
| If you have… | Official add-on | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| An M3U playlist from a legitimate provider | IPTV Simple Client | Free add-on; your subscription |
| An antenna and an HDHomeRun tuner | HDHomeRun Client | Tuner from about $100; channels free |
| A home TV server (Tvheadend, NextPVR, MythTV) | Tvheadend HTSP, NextPVR or MythTV client | Free software |
| An Enigma2 satellite or cable receiver | Enigma2 Client | Free; your existing card |
| Nothing, and want free channels | Pluto.tv PVR Client | Free, ad-supported |
| A Zattoo, waipu.tv or Teleboy subscription (Europe) | The matching PVR client | Your subscription |
| A Stalker/MAG-style portal from a legitimate operator | Stalker Client | Your subscription |
| Plex with a tuner and Plex Pass | Plex video add-on | Plex Pass |
For US viewers the most useful combination is usually an antenna with an HDHomeRun tuner for local channels, plus Simple Client for any playlist your provider supplies. Kodi shows both in one guide, and with a USB drive attached it can record from the tuner. Our IPTV recording guide covers the DVR side.
Free ad-supported channels (FAST) are the other legitimate source of "free IPTV". Pluto TV has an official PVR client; Samsung TV Plus, Plex and others publish channels that some community playlists point Simple Client at. Those community add-ons aren't from Kodi's repository, so the same checks below apply, but they relay the services' own free streams rather than pirated ones. More on what FAST is in FAST channels explained.

Simple Client and IPTV Manager
PVR IPTV Simple Client is the workhorse. Version 21.11.0 was released in July 2025 for Kodi 21 and has been downloaded more than 2.2 million times. It reads M3U playlists and XMLTV guides, handles multicast streams, catch-up and timeshift, and since Kodi 20 can run several playlists side by side. Setup is covered step by step in our Kodi 21 IPTV setup guide, and every setting in Kodi IPTV Simple Client: Setup and Settings.
IPTV Manager often appears next to it in search results, which confuses people. It doesn't supply channels. It's a helper that collects live channels and guide data from compatible video add-ons, mostly European broadcaster add-ons, and hands them to Simple Client so they appear in Kodi's TV section. If you aren't using one of those add-ons, you don't need it.
What's actually wrong with third-party add-ons
Not every add-on outside Kodi's repository is a problem. Plenty of developers publish legitimate add-ons in their own repositories. But the "free live TV" category is dominated by add-ons that relay channels without permission, and the risks are concrete.
Kodi itself won't support you. The Kodi project keeps a public list of banned add-ons, repositories, builds and "wizards", several hundred entries long. Its forum rule is blunt: discussion of add-ons or services that violate US copyright law gets closed. If your Kodi has any of them installed, the official forum won't help troubleshoot it.
You're running code nobody reviewed. Kodi add-ons are Python scripts with wide access to the device. In 2018, security firm ESET found cryptocurrency-mining malware being spread through third-party Kodi repositories. Add-ons can also update themselves silently whenever their repository changes.
Legal exposure is real, if uneven. Rights holders mostly go after the people who build, host and sell, not viewers. In the US, the ACE anti-piracy coalition sued sellers of pre-loaded Kodi boxes such as TickBox and Dragon Box. In the UK, sellers of "fully loaded" boxes have been jailed. Viewers have received warning letters in several countries. Even one of the big listicle sites ranking for this search admits that some users of unofficial add-ons "have received legal letters". Our IPTV crackdown 2026 tracker covers recent cases.
They break, constantly. Streams vanish mid-match, repositories go offline, and the add-on that worked last month is now dead or replaced by a copycat with a similar name. That's why every list in this category is "still working in 2026".
The VPN advice is a tell. When a guide tells you to install a VPN before an add-on, it's telling you the add-on is something you'd want to hide. A VPN doesn't make an unlicensed stream licensed.
How to check any add-on in two minutes
- Where is it coming from? Go to Add-ons → Install from repository. If it's listed under Kodi Add-on repository, it's been through Team Kodi's review. Anything else came from a repository you or someone else added.
- Did you have to turn on Unknown sources? Settings → System → Add-ons → Unknown sources is off by default. Kodi warns you when you turn it on, for good reason. If an install guide starts there, slow down.
- Apply Kodi's rule. Is it offering premium sports, films or pay-TV channels for free? Then it's using pirated feeds.
- Who publishes it? A legitimate add-on names its developer, links to source code or a support page, and says which service it connects to.
- Does it need your account? Official add-ons for paid services make you sign in with your own subscription. If channels from a paid service appear with no login, that's your answer.
Cleaning up a box that came "fully loaded"
If you bought a box or were given one with Kodi already "set up", it almost certainly has a build with third-party add-ons. The cleanest fix is to start again.
- Uninstall Kodi completely, or on Android go to Settings → Apps → Kodi → Clear storage. That removes the build, its add-ons and its repositories.
- Install official Kodi from Google Play or kodi.tv. Turn Unknown sources back off if it was on.
- Add only what you need: Simple Client for a provider playlist, HDHomeRun for an antenna, Pluto.tv for free channels.
- If the box itself is an unbranded Android device from a marketplace, consider replacing it. Our guide to the best devices for Kodi live TV starts at about $20.
It's twenty minutes of work, and you end up with a faster, cleaner Kodi that the official forum will actually help you with.
Quick answers
What is the best IPTV add-on for Kodi? PVR IPTV Simple Client, from Kodi's official repository. It plays M3U playlists and XMLTV guides from any provider you use.
Are Kodi IPTV add-ons legal? Official add-ons from the Kodi repository are legal. Third-party add-ons that stream paid channels for free use unlicensed feeds, and Kodi bans them from its forums.
Is there a free legal live TV add-on for Kodi? Yes. The Pluto.tv PVR Client in the official repository gives free, ad-supported channels. An HDHomeRun tuner with the HDHomeRun client adds free local broadcast channels.
What is IPTV Manager in Kodi? A helper add-on that passes live channels from compatible video add-ons into Kodi's TV guide through Simple Client. It doesn't provide channels by itself.
How do I know if a Kodi add-on is official? Check whether it appears under Add-ons → Install from repository → Kodi Add-on repository. If you had to add a repository or enable Unknown sources, it isn't.
Can third-party Kodi add-ons contain malware? Yes. They run unreviewed code, and security researchers have found cryptocurrency-mining malware spread through third-party Kodi repositories.
Do I need a VPN for Kodi IPTV add-ons? Not for official add-ons and legitimate services. A VPN doesn't make an unlicensed stream legal.
Kodi's repository, add-on versions and banned list change over time, and Kodi 22 "Piers" may change the PVR client line-up. Legal enforcement varies by country. Checked October 2026.
