IPTV on Enigma2: Bouquets, 4097 vs 5002 and EPG Import

Short answer: Enigma2 receivers play IPTV by treating each stream as a channel in a bouquet file, so an M3U playlist has to be converted into Enigma2's own format before it appears in the channel list. The part most guides skip is the player: the same stream can play perfectly or stutter depending on whether the bouquet line tells the box to use its built-in GStreamer player or the ServiceApp/exteplayer3 alternative.

How Enigma2 handles internet streams

Enigma2 is the Linux-based software that runs on receivers such as Vu+, Dreambox, Zgemma, Octagon and many others. It was designed for satellite, cable and terrestrial TV, and it organises channels into lists called bouquets.

An internet stream is simply another entry in a bouquet. Instead of pointing to a satellite frequency, the entry contains a URL and tells the box which media player to use. Once it's there, the stream sits in your channel list like any other channel, can be added to favourites, and, with a guide source, shows programme information.

Most people use a community image rather than the manufacturer's firmware. OpenATV and OpenPLi are the two largest, with regular releases; OpenATV's 7.x series is current in 2026. Image choice affects which plugins and players are available, so it's worth knowing which you run: it's shown under Menu → Information. Instructions written for one image often use different menu names on another.

What a bouquet line looks like

Each stream in a bouquet file is two lines: a service reference and a display name. A typical IPTV entry looks like this:

#SERVICE 4097:0:1:0:0:0:0:0:0:0:http%3a//example.com/stream.m3u8:Channel Name

#DESCRIPTION Channel Name

The first number is the one that matters most. The colon in the URL is written as %3a so it doesn't confuse Enigma2's own colon-separated format.

Service type Player used When to try it
1 Enigma2's own DVB transport-stream handling Plain MPEG-TS streams only; not HLS
4097 GStreamer, built into every image The default; works for most HLS and MPEG-TS streams
5001 ServiceApp with GStreamer (gstplayer) Alternative GStreamer handling
5002 ServiceApp with exteplayer3 Often better for HLS, variable bitrates and some audio formats

ServiceApp is a plugin that adds the 5001 and 5002 types. It's included or installable on the main images. If a channel stutters, freezes or has no sound on 4097, changing that one number to 5002 is the first thing to try. ServiceApp's settings can also make it handle all 4097 entries by default.

Getting an M3U playlist into Enigma2

You rarely write bouquet lines by hand. There are three common approaches.

A converter plugin. Several plugins read an M3U playlist from a URL and build bouquets automatically, often including matching EPG data and a daily refresh. Install from your image's plugin feed where possible, rather than from download sites.

A script on a computer. Open-source tools such as e2m3u2bouquet convert an M3U into bouquet files, which you copy to /etc/enigma2 and reload. Useful if you want full control over channel order and names.

Channel-list editors. Desktop editors such as Dreamboxedit can import a playlist and let you arrange it before sending it to the box.

After adding files manually, reload the channel list from the menu, or restart the Enigma2 GUI, and add the new bouquet to bouquets.tv if the tool didn't. Our M3U playlist explainer covers the source format.

Adding a programme guide

Broadcast channels bring their own guide in the signal. IPTV entries don't, so you add one.

EPG Import is the standard plugin. It reads XMLTV guide files from sources you configure and loads them into Enigma2's guide.

Matching is by service reference. Each IPTV bouquet entry needs a matching entry in a channels file that ties it to the XMLTV channel ID. Converter plugins usually create this for you; manual setups need it written.

Guide data takes memory. On older boxes with little RAM, loading a large guide for thousands of channels can slow the interface. Import only the days and channels you need. Our EPG explainer describes the XMLTV format.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Try
Black screen, no picture Wrong player or unsupported codec Change 4097 to 5002; check the image has ServiceApp
Plays, then freezes after minutes Buffering or network Wired connection; increase buffer in ServiceApp settings
No sound on some channels Audio format (AC3, EAC3, AAC) handling Try 5002; check audio downmix settings
Channel name shows but won't start URL broken or expired Test the URL in VLC on a computer
Guide empty for IPTV channels No EPG mapping Check EPG Import sources and channel mapping
Box sluggish after import Too many channels or guide data Split bouquets; reduce EPG days

Test outside the box. If a stream won't play in VLC on a computer, the problem is the stream, not Enigma2. Our VLC guide shows how to open a playlist there.

Organising and backing up your setup

A working IPTV setup on Enigma2 is worth protecting, because image upgrades and experiments can wipe it.

Keep IPTV in its own bouquets. Separate IPTV bouquets from satellite ones, and split large playlists by category. Smaller bouquets load faster and make the guide easier to browse.

Rename and reorder once. Converter plugins let you set channel names and order, or you can edit them in a desktop editor. Do it before mapping the guide, since renaming later can break matches in some tools.

Back up settings before upgrading. Every major image has a backup tool that saves bouquets, plugin settings and EPG sources to USB or network storage. Restore them after flashing a new image.

Refresh playlists deliberately. If your provider changes stream addresses, an automatic daily refresh keeps bouquets current. If addresses rarely change, a manual refresh avoids surprises in your favourites.

Use the web interface. OpenWebif, included in most images, lets you view bouquets, zap channels and check logs from a browser on the same network, which is far easier than the remote for troubleshooting.

Hardware matters more than on other devices

Enigma2 boxes vary enormously in age and power. A receiver that handles satellite flawlessly may struggle with internet streams.

Older chipsets may not decode HEVC (H.265) or cope with high-bitrate HLS. Many popular boxes from the 2010s fall into this group.

4K receivers from recent years, with ARM processors and more memory, handle streams far better.

Network ports on older boxes may be 100 Mbps. That's fine for streams but slow for recordings to network storage.

If streams are your main use, a modern streaming box with a player app is often smoother; see our IPTV receiver guide for how the two compare.

Enigma2 is legitimate, widely used software. Adding free, licensed streams, such as broadcasters' own public streams, or a playlist from a licensed provider, is fine.

Two areas are not. Card sharing and softcam setups used to decrypt pay channels without a subscription are illegal across Europe and the UK and have led to convictions. Plugins that come with ready-made lists of premium channels are distributing unlicensed streams. Some community forums mix legitimate and unlicensed content; treat anything offering "all channels" with suspicion, and don't install plugins from unknown sources, as they run with full access to the box.

Quick answers

Can Enigma2 play IPTV? Yes. Internet streams are added as entries in bouquets, with a service type telling the box which media player to use.

What does 4097 mean in an Enigma2 bouquet? It's the service type that tells Enigma2 to play the stream with its built-in GStreamer player. 5001 and 5002 use the ServiceApp plugin's alternative players.

Should I use 4097 or 5002? Start with 4097. If a stream stutters, freezes or has no audio, try 5002, which uses exteplayer3 and often handles HLS better.

How do I add an M3U playlist to Enigma2? Use a converter plugin from your image's feed, or convert it on a computer with a tool such as e2m3u2bouquet and copy the bouquet files to /etc/enigma2.

How do I get a guide for IPTV channels on Enigma2? Install EPG Import, add an XMLTV source, and make sure each channel is mapped to the right guide ID.

Which Enigma2 image is best for IPTV? OpenATV and OpenPLi are the most widely used and both support ServiceApp and EPG Import. Choose one that officially supports your receiver.

Why is my Enigma2 box slow after adding IPTV? Large bouquets and guide data use memory. Split channels into smaller bouquets and import fewer days of EPG.
