Xtream Codes Login in Plex: Converting to M3U and EPG

Short answer: Plex can't log in to an Xtream Codes account. It doesn't take a server, username and password, and it doesn't take an M3U either. You turn the login into two links (an M3U playlist and an XMLTV guide) and feed those to a bridge such as Threadfin, which Plex then sees as a TV tuner. Dispatcharr can skip the conversion and take the Xtream login directly. The catch worth knowing first: in that conversion your password ends up inside every stream URL, and without a buffer in the bridge those URLs can reach every device in the house.

Which "Plex Xtream" are you looking for?

Search results for this phrase mix three unrelated things:

  • Xtream Codes logins. A login format (server URL, username, password) used by many IPTV panels. That's what this article covers. Our Xtream Codes login explainer covers the format itself.
  • "Xtream Player". An Android Auto media app from the Fermata project. Its version 1.7.50, reported in late September 2026, added support for playing Plex Live TV in the car for premium users. It's a client for Plex, not a way to get Xtream accounts into Plex.
  • A 2023 security alert. In March 2023 the US cybersecurity agency CISA added an old Plex Media Server flaw (CVE-2020-5741, exploitable only with an admin account) to its known-exploited list on the same day as a flaw in XStream, a Java library. The names are a coincidence. The useful takeaway: keep Plex Media Server updated.

Turning a login into links

Xtream-style panels expose the same few addresses. With your server (including the port, if one was given), username and password, the two links Plex's bridge needs usually look like this:

What Typical address Notes
M3U playlist http://SERVER:PORT/get.php?username=USER&password=PASS&type=m3u_plus&output=ts m3u_plus includes tvg-id, logos and groups
XMLTV guide http://SERVER:PORT/xmltv.php?username=USER&password=PASS Same account, matching IDs
A single live channel http://SERVER:PORT/live/USER/PASS/STREAMID.ts What ends up inside the M3U
Account info (for apps) http://SERVER:PORT/player_api.php?username=USER&password=PASS Returns JSON, including connection limit and expiry

A few details make the difference between working and not:

  • output=ts vs output=m3u8. Plain transport stream (ts) is usually easier for Plex. Use HLS (m3u8) only if the provider requires it.
  • Special characters. If your username or password contains @, &, # or spaces, percent-encode them (@ becomes %40). A Plex forum user traced a broken setup to exactly this in 2021.
  • Test before building. Paste the M3U link into a browser; it should download a text file starting with #EXTM3U. Then play a channel in VLC. Our M3U URL guide explains the parameters and common errors.

Not every panel supports both endpoints. If get.php returns an error but apps work with your login, the provider may have disabled M3U export, and Route 2 below is your option.

Find your connection limit first

Every Xtream account has a maximum number of simultaneous streams. Plex needs to know it, because each channel being watched or recorded uses one "tuner". Open the player_api.php address above in a browser and look in the user_info section for max_connections, along with exp_date (a Unix timestamp for when the account expires).

Set the bridge's tuner count to that number. With a one-connection account, Plex can't record one channel while you watch another, and no setting changes that. More on how providers count streams in IPTV multiple connections explained.

Route 1: Threadfin with converted links

  1. Install Threadfin, either in Docker (our compose walkthrough) or as a plain program (Windows, Mac and NAS).
  2. In the first-run wizard, set the tuner count to your max_connections value and choose XEPG for the guide.
  3. Paste the get.php link as the playlist and the xmltv.php link as the guide.
  4. In Settings, set the buffer to FFmpeg (more on why below) and schedule a daily playlist and guide update.
  5. Filter by group and map channels to guide entries. Xtream playlists often include film and series groups; exclude them, since Plex can only use live channels. Guidance in building a clean M3U for Plex.
  6. In Plex: Settings → Live TV & DVR → Set Up Plex DVR, enter BRIDGE-IP:34400 manually if it's not found, and use http://BRIDGE-IP:34400/xmltv/threadfin.xml as the XMLTV guide.

Route 2: Dispatcharr with the login

Dispatcharr is a newer open-source stream manager that accepts Xtream Codes accounts as an input, alongside ordinary M3U links. It can then output an M3U, an XMLTV guide, its own Xtream-style login, or an emulated HDHomeRun device, which is the part Plex needs. It runs as a Docker container (ghcr.io/dispatcharr/dispatcharr) with its web interface on port 9191.

The flow, broadly: add your provider as an M3U account of the Xtream type with server, username and password; let it import channels; pick the channels you want into a channel list; let its EPG matching attach guide data (it supports XMLTV sources and Schedules Direct); then add it in Plex's DVR setup at DISPATCHARR-IP:9191. Menu names shift between releases, so follow the project's current docs for the exact clicks.

Threadfin Dispatcharr
Takes Xtream login directly No; needs the converted links Yes
Multiple providers merged Possible, more manual Built for it
EPG matching Manual map editor, ID-based Automatic suggestions plus manual
Install options Docker or standalone binaries Docker
Project activity Slower; last tagged release we saw was Sept 2024 Frequent commits in 2025 and 2026

Paid conversion services also exist that take your Xtream login in the cloud and hand back M3U and XMLTV links. They work, but they mean giving a third party your credentials. If you're running Plex already, a local bridge does the same job without that.

Keeping your password out of sight

Xtream credentials are unusually exposed, because they sit in plain text inside every stream URL. Once converted, they can leak in three places:

  • To client devices. With the bridge's buffer off, Plex and its apps may be handed the provider's original URL, credentials included. With the buffer on, the bridge fetches the stream itself and Plex only sees the bridge's local address.
  • In logs and backups. The bridge's config folder and Plex's logs contain the URLs. Don't post them unedited on forums when asking for help.
  • To online editors and converters. Any service you paste the link into has your login.

And don't expose the bridge's port to the internet. Plex's own remote access handles watching away from home (with Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass since April 2025); the bridge only needs to be reachable on your home network.

What doesn't come across

Xtream logins usually unlock more than live channels: film and series catalogues, catch-up for recent programmes, and per-channel archive. None of that reaches Plex through a tuner. Plex gets live channels and, with Plex Pass ($6.99 a month, $69.99 a year or $249.99 lifetime), the ability to record them. If catch-up or on-demand content is the main reason you subscribe, a player app that speaks Xtream directly will serve you better. Our player app guide lists options by device.

Finally, the format says nothing about legitimacy. The original Xtream Codes panel software was shut down by Italian authorities in 2019, and the login style lives on across many panels, a lot of them unlicensed. If you're unsure where yours comes from, read how to check whether an IPTV provider is licensed before wiring it into your home server.

Quick answers

Can Plex use an Xtream Codes login?

Not directly. Plex Live TV only accepts tuners. Convert the login into M3U and XMLTV links for a bridge such as Threadfin, or use Dispatcharr, which accepts Xtream logins and presents an HDHomeRun-style tuner to Plex.

What is the M3U link for an Xtream account?

It usually follows the pattern http://SERVER:PORT/get.php?username=USER&password=PASS&type=m3u_plus&output=ts, with the guide at http://SERVER:PORT/xmltv.php?username=USER&password=PASS. Some providers disable these endpoints.

How many tuners should I set for an Xtream account?

Match the max_connections value shown in the user_info section of the account's player_api.php response. Each channel watched or recorded in Plex uses one.

Does Plex show Xtream films, series or catch-up?

No. Through a tuner Plex only receives live channels. On-demand and catch-up content need a player app that supports Xtream logins.

Is it safe to put my Xtream login into an online converter?

It hands your credentials to a third party. A local bridge such as Threadfin or Dispatcharr does the same conversion on your own network.

What is Xtream Player for Plex?

Xtream Player is an Android Auto media app from the Fermata project. A September 2026 update added Plex Live TV playback in the car. It is unrelated to Xtream Codes logins.

Why enable the buffer in Threadfin for Xtream sources?

With the buffer on, Threadfin fetches the stream and gives Plex a local address, which keeps your provider credentials off client devices and often improves playback.

Xtream-style panels differ, and some providers change or disable the playlist and guide endpoints. Bridge software menus change between releases. Plex prices are US list prices at the time of checking. Checked October 2026.
