Short answer: an IPTV M3U URL is the web address your player app downloads the channel list from, and on most provider systems it has your username and password written into it in plain text. Reading its parts tells you a lot: whether you'll get guide IDs and logos (m3u_plus), whether streams arrive as MPEG-TS or HLS (the output setting), and why one wrong character stops everything loading.
At a glance
The M3U URL, decoded
| What it is | The address a player downloads your playlist from |
| Usually contains | Server, port, username, password, options |
| type=m3u_plus | Adds guide IDs, logos and groups |
| output=ts or m3u8 | MPEG-TS or HLS streams |
| Security | Treat it like a password |
Anatomy of a typical M3U URL
Many IPTV providers run the same kind of server software, so their playlist addresses look alike. A typical one, with made-up details, looks like this:
http://tv.example.com:8080/get.php?username=jsmith&password=abc123&type=m3u_plus&output=ts
| Part | Example | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | http:// or https:// | Whether the connection is encrypted |
| Server | tv.example.com | The provider's server address |
| Port | :8080 | Which "door" on the server; must match exactly |
| Path | /get.php | The script that builds your playlist |
| Username and password | username=jsmith&password=abc123 | Identify your account |
| Type | type=m3u or m3u_plus | Basic or extended playlist |
| Output | output=ts, m3u8 or hls | Stream format for each channel |
Everything after the question mark is a list of settings separated by ampersands. The order doesn't matter, but spelling, capital letters in the username and password, and the port all do.
Not every provider uses this pattern. Licensed services with their own apps don't expose a URL at all, and some providers give a short link or a file name instead. The principles below still apply.
m3u or m3u_plus: which to use
The type setting decides how much information each channel line carries.
m3u gives a basic list: channel name and stream address. It loads fractionally faster, but the player has to guess everything else.
m3u_plus adds the extended attributes: tvg-id for matching the programme guide, tvg-logo for channel logos and group-title for categories. Almost everyone should use m3u_plus. If your guide stays empty and your URL says plain m3u, that is very likely why.
Our M3U playlist explainer shows what those attributes look like inside the file.
output=ts or output=m3u8: the stream format
The output setting controls how each channel is delivered, and it's the most useful thing to change when streams misbehave.
| Output | Format | Tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| ts | MPEG transport stream, one continuous connection | Android boxes, Enigma2, apps with good TS support; fast channel changes |
| m3u8 or hls | HLS, the stream split into short segments | Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, smart TVs, web players; more tolerant of patchy connections |
If channels won't play on Apple devices, try switching to m3u8. Apple's players are built around HLS.
If channels are slow to start or stutter on an Android box, try ts. It often changes channel faster.
Only change one setting at a time, and remember that some providers support only one format.
Entering the URL without mistakes
Most failures when adding a playlist are simple typing errors. A TV remote makes them easy to commit.
Copy and paste where possible. Many player apps have a phone app or web page for entering the address. Otherwise, use your TV platform's phone remote app, which provides a proper keyboard.
Check the port. Leaving out :8080 or typing the wrong number is common, and the result is a connection error rather than a clear message.
Watch lookalike characters. Lower-case l and capital I, zero and capital O. Usernames and passwords are usually case-sensitive.
Don't add spaces. A space pasted at the end of the address can break it in some apps.
Short links. Some providers issue a shortened link that redirects to the full URL. Most apps follow it, but a few don't; ask for the full address if a short one fails.
What the error tells you
When a playlist URL fails, the app's message, or opening the URL in a web browser, usually points to the cause.
| Result | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Downloads a file starting with #EXTM3U | URL works | The problem is in the app or streams |
| 401 or 403 | Login refused or access denied | Check username and password; subscription may have lapsed or hit its connection limit |
| 404 Not Found | Address or path wrong | Re-check the URL; see our 404 guide |
| Timeout or can't connect | Server down, wrong port, or blocked | Try later; check the port; try another network |
| Empty file | Account has no channels assigned, or wrong type | Contact the provider |
Test in a browser on a computer. A working URL downloads a text file. Open it in a text editor and you'll see the first line, #EXTM3U, followed by channel entries. That proves the address and login are right.
Where the URL goes in common apps
Every player app has a slightly different menu, but the idea is the same: add a playlist, choose "URL" or "M3U", paste the address.
TiviMate. Add playlist, choose M3U playlist, enter the URL. It then asks for an EPG address if the playlist doesn't include one. Our TiviMate setup guide walks through it.
IPTV Smarters and similar apps. Choose "Load your playlist or file/URL" rather than the Xtream login option, give it a name, and paste the address.
VLC. Media, Open Network Stream, paste the URL. VLC plays the list but has no IPTV guide.
Kodi. Install the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, set the location to Remote path, and enter the URL in its settings.
Enigma2 receivers. The URL goes into a converter plugin, which builds bouquets from it.
Split it for Xtream apps. If an app asks for server, username and password instead, you can usually take them straight from the M3U URL: the server is everything up to and including the port, and the username and password are the values after username= and password=.
When the URL changes
Playlist addresses aren't permanent, and a sudden failure after months of working usually means something changed at the provider's end.
Providers move servers. If the server name or port changes, every device needs the new address. Legitimate providers email customers in advance.
Password resets change the URL. Because the password is part of the address, changing it breaks the old one everywhere.
Renewals rarely change it, but an account that lapsed and was re-created may get new credentials. Keep a copy of the current address somewhere safe, such as a password manager.
The guide address that goes with it
Most providers pair the playlist URL with a separate guide (EPG) URL built on the same pattern, often ending in xmltv.php with the same username and password. Some playlists include the guide address in their first line, in a url-tvg or x-tvg-url attribute, and apps that recognise it load the guide automatically. Our EPG URL guide covers finding and adding it.
Keep the URL private
Because the address contains your login, anyone who has it can use your account, and your provider may cut you off if it's used on too many devices at once.
Blank out credentials in screenshots when asking for help online.
Avoid online "playlist checkers" that ask for your URL. Some harvest working logins.
Change the password if the URL has been shared. The old address then stops working.
Choose https if the provider offers it, so the address and your login aren't sent in plain text.
The URL format is neutral technology. Whether its contents are legal depends on the provider: a licensed provider will tell you which rights holders it has agreements with, while cheap lists of premium channels are almost always unlicensed.
Quick answers
What is an M3U URL? The web address a player app uses to download your IPTV playlist. On most provider systems it includes the server, port, your username and password, and some options.
What is the difference between m3u and m3u_plus? m3u_plus includes extra attributes for guide matching, logos and channel groups. It's the right choice for almost everyone.
Should I use output=ts or output=m3u8? Use m3u8 (HLS) on Apple devices and many smart TVs; ts often changes channels faster on Android boxes. Try the other if streams misbehave.
How can I test an M3U URL? Open it in a web browser on a computer. If it downloads a text file starting with #EXTM3U, the address and login work.
Why does my M3U URL give a 401 or 403 error? The login was refused: a wrong username or password, an expired subscription, or too many devices connected.
Is it safe to share my M3U URL? No. It contains your username and password, so anyone with it can use your account.
Where do I find the EPG URL? Usually alongside the playlist URL from your provider, often ending in xmltv.php, or embedded in the playlist's first line.
Providers use different server software and URL formats, and player apps differ in which options they support. Checked September 2026.
