Which IPTV Service Fits Your Household? An 8-Question Quiz

Short answer: the right IPTV service depends far more on who lives in your house than on channel counts. Answer the eight questions below, tally your letters, and you'll land on one of six household types, each matched to a licensed service and an October 2026 price, from $0 to about $95 a month. The catch most buyers miss: plenty of households don't need a full live TV bundle at all, because an antenna already covers the channels they watch most.

Most common result YouTube TV, $82.99/mo
Priciest result Hulu + Live TV, $99.99/mo

How the quiz works

Each answer below carries one or two letters. Jot them down as you go. When you've finished, the letter you've collected most often is your household type. Where an answer says "no letter", skip it; that question is ruling things out rather than pointing somewhere.

A word on what "IPTV service" means here. Technically, any live TV delivered over the internet is IPTV, and that includes YouTube TV, Sling and DirecTV's streaming plans. Those are the services the quiz picks from, because they're licensed, they show up on your card statement under a real company name, and they'll still exist next year. If you want the background first, our explainer on what an IPTV service actually gives you for the money covers it.

The eight questions

1. Does a cheap indoor antenna pull in your local ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox? (Check your address on the FCC's DTV reception map if you're unsure.)

  • Yes, all or most of them strongly: C, D, E
  • No, or I'm in an apartment where it won't work: A, B, F
  • I don't care about local channels: D

2. Which sport matters most in your house?

  • A local NBA, NHL or MLB team on a regional sports network: B
  • NFL, college football and ESPN's big games: C
  • A bit of everything, but nobody's obsessive: A
  • Very little or none: D, E

3. What's the most you'll pay each month, all in?

  • Under $15: E
  • $15 to $45: C, D
  • $45 to $80: B (on an introductory rate)
  • $80 or more is fine if it's the right service: A, F

4. At peak time, how many screens are watching live TV at once?

  • One: C
  • Two or three: A, D
  • Four or more, all at home: B, E

5. Do you already pay for Disney+ or Hulu, or would the kids revolt without them?

  • Yes: F
  • No: no letter

6. Who does most of the watching?

  • Kids and parents, lots of on-demand: F
  • Older relatives who want news, westerns and classic series: E
  • One sports fan, everyone else streams: C
  • Everyone, everything: A
  • Reality, lifestyle and cooking fans: D

7. How much do you record?

  • Constantly, and I want it to keep for months: A, D
  • Now and then: no letter
  • Never; I watch live or on demand: C, E

8. Do you watch away from home, on a phone or at a second house?

  • Often, and I want my local channels there too: A
  • Sometimes, on a phone: no letter
  • Almost never: B, E

Your result: six households, six setups

Prices are standard monthly rates in October 2026, before taxes and any regional sports fee.

Most letters Household Service Per month Streams
A The do-everything home YouTube TV $82.99 3
B The local-team house DirecTV Choice (or MySports) $94.99 ($64.99) Unlimited at home
C The one-fan house Antenna + ESPN and Fox One bundle $39.99 Per app terms
D The no-sports house Antenna + Philo $25 3
E The quiet, thrifty house Antenna + Frndly TV + free apps $8.99 to $12.99 1 to 4
F The Disney family Hulu + Live TV $99.99 2 at home

What each household gets, and gives up

A: The do-everything home, YouTube TV

You need local channels without an antenna, a spread of sport, recordings that stick around and the same locals on your phone when you travel. YouTube TV does that better than anything else at its price: locals in markets covering over 98% of US TV households, unlimited DVR kept for nine months, and three simultaneous streams. What you give up: most regional sports networks, and a fourth stream unless you add the 4K Plus add-on at $9.99. It has also gone up from $35 at launch to $82.99, so don't assume today's price is permanent.

B: The local-team house, DirecTV

If your NBA, NHL or MLB team is on a regional sports network, the list of services that carry it is short, and DirecTV's streaming plans are usually top of it. Choice at $94.99 carries the most RSNs plus SEC Network, ACC Network and Big Ten Network, and allows unlimited streams at home. If that's more than you'll pay, MySports is the sports-only option at $44.99 a month for six months, then $64.99. Enter your ZIP code on DirecTV's site before signing up; RSN carriage depends on exactly where you live. Our guide to regional sports network streaming lists who carries which network.

C: The one-fan house, antenna plus ESPN and Fox One

One person cares about football; nobody else minds. An antenna gets CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox games free, and the ESPN and Fox One bundle at $39.99 adds ESPN's full line-up and Fox's cable sports channels in their own apps. That's less than half of YouTube TV for most of the same football. You give up a single channel guide, cable entertainment networks and anything on a regional network. If ESPN is all you need, ESPN Unlimited alone is $31.99.

D: The no-sports house, antenna plus Philo

Philo is the cheapest proper bundle of cable entertainment channels, at $25 a month, with three streams and a generous DVR. It carries the lifestyle, reality and drama networks, and deliberately leaves out sport and news networks, which is how it stays cheap. Pair it with an antenna for local news and the big network shows. If anyone in the house later wants a game, add one sports app for that season and drop it after.

E: The quiet, thrifty house, Frndly TV and free apps

Frndly TV carries family and classic channels such as Hallmark's networks and western and nostalgia channels. Basic is $8.99 for one standard-definition stream, Classic is $10.99 for two HD streams, and Premium is $12.99 for four. Add free apps like Pluto TV and Tubi for news and old series, and an antenna for locals. For many retired couples this covers everything cable did for about a tenth of the price.

F: The Disney family, Hulu + Live TV

At $99.99, Hulu + Live TV is the most expensive result here, but it includes Disney+ and Hulu (both with ads), which many families would otherwise pay for separately. Take those away and the live TV part costs about the same as YouTube TV. The real drawback is screens: two streams at home is tight for a family, and more costs extra. If you don't care about Disney+ and Hulu, go back and choose between A and B instead.

Tied letters? Use these tie-breakers

  • A and B tied: check whether your local team's regional network is on YouTube TV in your area. If it isn't, B. If it is, or you don't follow a local team, A.
  • A and F tied: add up what you pay for Disney+ and Hulu now. If it's more than about $17 a month, F works out cheaper.
  • C and D tied: ask whether the sports fan would actually watch $15 a month of extra games. If not, D and buy a single sports month when it matters.
  • D and E tied: E if anyone in the house struggles with menus or watches mostly older programming; D if they want current cable shows.
  • Everything scattered: start with the antenna and free apps for a month. Whatever you miss tells you what to buy.

Test your result before you commit

Trials are shorter than they used to be, and some services have dropped them entirely. In October 2026:

Service Free trial What to test
YouTube TV Usually offered to new members Your locals, away-from-home viewing
DirecTV streaming About 5 days Your RSN, an actual game night
Frndly TV 7 days Whether SD on Basic looks acceptable
Philo Check at sign-up Your must-have channels are in it
Hulu + Live TV, Sling Generally none Pay for one month, set a cancel reminder

Two practical tips. Start any trial on a Thursday so it covers a weekend of real use. And put a reminder in your phone for the day before it ends, because almost every trial converts to paid automatically. More detail on each one is in our guide to which live TV services offer a free trial.

Why cheap "IPTV service" sellers aren't in the quiz

Search for "IPTV service" and most results sell something different: a year of "20,000 channels" for $50 to $100, every sport, every premium network, sold through a website with no company address. Those services don't license the channels they carry. That's why they're so cheap, and it's why they're not in this quiz.

The practical risks are plain enough. They get shut down without warning, often taking a prepaid year with them. They're paid in ways that make refunds hard. Their apps usually have to be sideloaded, which Amazon and Google increasingly block. And in several countries viewers, not just sellers, have received warning letters or fines.

You can tell the two apart quickly: a licensed service names its owner, lists a published price on its own site, and sits in the official app store for your TV.

Quick answers

What is the best IPTV service for a family? For most families needing local channels and some sport, YouTube TV at $82.99. Families who already pay for Disney+ and Hulu often do better with Hulu + Live TV at $99.99, which includes both.

What is the cheapest legal IPTV service? Frndly TV, from $8.99 a month for one standard-definition stream. Philo at $25 is the cheapest service with a broad set of cable entertainment channels.

Which IPTV service carries my local sports team? If the team is on a regional sports network, DirecTV's streaming plans carry the most of them. Check your ZIP code on the service's site before subscribing, because carriage varies by area.

Do I need a full live TV bundle? Not if an antenna picks up your local stations and you don't follow a team on a regional network. Many households save $40 to $70 a month with an antenna plus one cheaper app.

Which service is best for several TVs at once? DirecTV's streaming plans allow unlimited streams at home. Frndly TV Premium allows four for $12.99, and YouTube TV allows three, or unlimited at home with its 4K Plus add-on.

Can I switch services month to month? Yes. All the services in this quiz are monthly with no contract, so you can cancel at the end of a billing period and switch, for example, for football season only.

Are cheap IPTV subscriptions with thousands of channels legal? Almost never. Services selling every premium and sports channel for a few dollars a month don't hold the rights, and they can disappear without refunds.
