Short answer: a PS5 runs licensed TV apps from the PlayStation Store and, in the US, Sony's own free Live TV on PS5 channels. It won't run an M3U player, a usable browser or anything you sideload, and it can't receive a cast from your phone. The one legal way to get a playlist you're entitled to onto a PS5 is indirect: a Plex server elsewhere in the house. For most people, a $30-$100 streaming device in the next HDMI port is the better answer.
At a glance
IPTV on a PS5
| Works | Store apps, Live TV on PS5 (US), Plex |
| Doesn't | M3U players, sideloading, casting, web players |
| Free option | Live TV on PS5: 100+ ad-supported channels |
| Playlist workaround | Plex server on a PC or NAS |
| Better for daily TV | A streaming stick or box on another input |
Every route on PS5, with a verdict
Most "IPTV on PS5" pages are short, vague, and a few are plainly wrong (one popular version tells you to pass a Fire TV Stick "through" the PS5, which has no HDMI input). Here is every route people try, and what actually happens.
| Route | Works on PS5? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed apps from the PlayStation Store | Yes | Line-up varies by country and provider |
| Live TV on PS5 (Sony) | Yes, US | Free, needs a Sony Pictures CORE account |
| Plex app with your own Plex server | Yes, with caveats | Server does the work; check the app's Live TV section |
| M3U or Xtream player app | No | None in the Store; no sideloading |
| Web player in a browser | No | The PS5 has no browser you can open normally |
| Cast or AirPlay from a phone | No | Not a Google Cast, AirPlay or DLNA receiver |
| USB drive in Media Gallery | Files only | Recorded files, not live streams |
So the honest picture: the PS5 is a good player for services that have built a PlayStation app, and close to useless for anything else.
Sony's free Live TV on PS5
The one genuinely new thing this year. In late August 2026 Sony added Live TV on PS5 to the Media tab in the US. According to PlayStation's own page it's completely free, needs no download, and offers over 100 live channels plus on-demand programming across films, TV, anime, sport, news, weather and documentaries.
- Accounts: an adult PlayStation account, plus a Sony Pictures CORE account (new or linked).
- Where: Media tab → Live TV on PS5. The DualSense and the Media Remote both work, and captions toggle with the CC button.
- Regions: Sony says "eligible territories"; at launch that meant the US only.
- What it isn't: a cable replacement. These are FAST channels, the free ad-supported kind you'd find on Pluto TV or Xumo Play. Trade press noted that many of the channels also appear on Xumo Play. No major sports networks.
It's good background TV and costs nothing, which already makes it the best "IPTV" most PS5 owners will use. For the step-by-step setup, see our Live TV on PS5 guide.
Paid and network apps
The PS5 launched in 2020 with the big on-demand apps (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Apple TV, Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock) and has added more since, including sports apps such as DAZN in many countries and UK broadcaster apps such as BBC iPlayer and ITVX.
Live TV bundles are patchier. Some US providers support PlayStation, some dropped it, and a few never built an app. Before you pay for YouTube TV ($82.99), Hulu + Live TV ($99.99) or any sports service, search for it in the PlayStation Store on your console. If it isn't there, it isn't coming because you subscribed.
A useful trick on the YouTube app: you can link your phone with a TV code and send videos to the PS5 from the phone's YouTube app. That's YouTube's own feature inside its app, not general casting, and it doesn't help any other app.
The Plex route for a playlist you're entitled to
This is the workaround most PS5 guides miss. Plex has an official PS5 app, and Plex's server software can take in live TV from legitimate sources and serve it to that app. The PS5 never needs to understand an M3U file; the server does.
- Run Plex Media Server on a PC, Mac or NAS that stays on.
- Add a source. A network antenna tuner is the classic, fully legal choice: free local channels. An ISP or campus playlist you're entitled to can be fed in through a bridge tool; our step-by-step guide to adding IPTV to Plex covers that.
- Set up Live TV & DVR in the server's settings. That needs a Plex Pass subscription.
- Open the Plex app on the PS5 and look for the Live TV section. Plex's console apps have sometimes lagged its other apps on features, so confirm it appears on yours before you buy a tuner for this.
Worth it if you already run Plex. If you don't, it's a lot of machinery to avoid buying a $30 stick.
What doesn't work, and why
No sideloading, ever. The PS5 installs only PlayStation Store apps. "IPTV app for PS5" download links are fake at best and malware at worst.
The hidden browser. There's a browser buried in the system used for sign-ins and help pages, and you can reach it by roundabout menu paths. It isn't designed for video, Sony can close the route in any update, and typing an IPTV login into it is a bad idea. Don't plan around it. (The older PS4 did ship a usable browser, which is why some guides still mention one.)
Casting and mirroring. PS Remote Play goes the other way: console to phone. The PS5 doesn't accept Google Cast, AirPlay, Miracast or DLNA streams.
Jailbreaks. Exploits for older firmware exist. Using them can get the console banned from PlayStation Network and ends your warranty. Not a TV solution.
"PS5-compatible" IPTV subscriptions. Sellers of cheap channel bundles sometimes put "PS5" in their page titles; read the setup steps and they never actually mention the console. These services carry ESPN, NFL and pay-per-view without any licence, vanish after takedowns and take prepaid months with them.
Better alternatives, priced
Plug one of these into another HDMI port on the same TV. All run the licensed live TV apps and proper player apps for a playlist you're entitled to.
| Device | List price (US) | Player apps for playlists | Why pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick | about $30 | Few | Cheapest way to get every big licensed service |
| Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd gen, Vega OS) | $59.99 | Appstore only | Simple, if your apps are in Amazon's store |
| Google TV Streamer | $99.99 | Many, via Google Play | Best all-rounder, Ethernet built in |
| Apple TV 4K | from about $129 | Several good paid ones | Smoothest apps, AirPlay from iPhone |
Prices are list prices seen in autumn 2026 and are often discounted. Your TV's own apps are a free fifth option worth trying first. For the wider buying picture after Amazon's model changes, see our best streaming devices of 2026.
The power argument is real too. A PS5 playing video draws many times what a stick does, and in rest mode it keeps drawing. If you watch TV every evening, a stick pays for itself in electricity, keeps the console free for games and stops the "who has the TV" argument. Our box vs stick vs smart TV comparison goes further.
If you do use the PS5: settings
- Ethernet. The PS5 has a port. Live streams buffer less than on-demand, so a cable fixes more stutter than any setting.
- HDR. Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → HDR: "On When Supported". Forcing it always on can make ordinary HD channels look washed out.
- Media Remote. Sony's remote gives proper playback buttons; the controller's sleep timer can also turn it off mid-film.
- Power Saving. Settings → System → Power Saving. If you leave the console in rest mode for quick TV, cut what it does there.
- Region. Your PSN account's country decides which apps you see. Sony doesn't support changing it on an existing account.
Quick answers
Can you watch IPTV on a PS5? Yes, if it's a licensed service with a PlayStation app, or Sony's free Live TV on PS5 in the US. You can't load an M3U playlist directly.
Is there an M3U player for PS5? No. The PlayStation Store has no general IPTV player and the console can't sideload apps.
Is Live TV on PS5 free? Yes. It's ad-supported with 100+ channels and needs a PlayStation account and a Sony Pictures CORE account, but no subscription.
Can I cast IPTV from my phone to a PS5? No. The PS5 isn't a Google Cast, AirPlay or DLNA receiver. Only some apps, such as YouTube, let you link a phone inside their own app.
Can Plex play live TV on a PS5? Plex has an official PS5 app, and a Plex server with Live TV & DVR (Plex Pass) can feed it an antenna or other legitimate source. Check the Live TV section appears in the PS5 app first.
Does the PS5 have a web browser? Not one you can open normally. A hidden browser exists for sign-ins, but it isn't usable for streaming.
What's the best alternative to a PS5 for IPTV? A streaming device on another HDMI input. A Google TV Streamer is the best all-rounder; a Roku stick is the cheapest route to licensed services.
