IPTV on PlayStation 5: Live TV on PS5 and the Apps That Work

Short answer: the PS5 cannot install player apps of your choice and has no general web browser, so IPTV on it means the licensed services in the PlayStation Store. The newsworthy part is Sony's own free Live TV on PS5 service, added in the US in August 2026, which puts more than 100 ad-supported channels in the Media tab without a subscription.

What changed in 2026

Our earlier IPTV on PlayStation guide explains why the PS5 is the most closed box in the living room. That is still true. What has changed is what Sony itself offers.

Live TV on PS5 is a free, ad-supported service built into the console's Media tab. Sony describes it as more than 100 live channels plus on-demand programming, covering films, TV, anime, news, weather and some sports content, with new channels added over time.

You need two accounts. An adult PlayStation Network account, plus a Sony Pictures CORE account created or linked during setup.

It launched in the United States. Sony describes availability as "eligible territories", and at the time of writing that means the US. Other regions have not been given a date.

It sits alongside, not instead of, other apps. Live TV on PS5 does not replace YouTube TV or a broadcaster's app; it is an extra free layer, much like Pluto TV or Tubi, with Sony's own channels and anime programming as its distinctive feature.

Setting up Live TV on PS5

Update the console first. Settings → System → System software update. The Media tab changes with firmware releases.

Open the Media tab on the home screen, find Live TV, and follow the account prompts.

Browse by channel or by category. It behaves like other free ad-supported TV services: a grid guide for live channels and a separate area for on-demand titles.

Expect adverts. Free means ad-funded. There is no paid ad-free tier.

Beyond Sony's own service, the PlayStation Store carries apps from established providers. Availability changes more on PlayStation than on other devices, so always check the provider's own supported-devices page.

Service type Examples What to check
Paid US live-TV bundles YouTube TV, Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV Current PS5 support and price
Free ad-supported Live TV on PS5, Pluto TV, Tubi Region availability
Sports League and broadcaster apps, DAZN in some regions Rights in your country
UK catch-up BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 Live streams inside each app

Prices change regularly. US live-TV bundles have risen several times in recent years. Treat any figure you read as a starting point and check at sign-up.

Sport is scattered. No single app on PS5 carries every competition. Our sports streaming guide maps out who holds what.

Why your own playlist won't work

Some legitimate providers deliver channels as an M3U playlist or a player-app login. On most devices you would install a general-purpose player. On a PS5 you cannot.

No sideloading. The console installs only PlayStation Store apps, and the Store does not carry general M3U players.

No usable browser. The PS5 has a hidden browser used for sign-in pages, but it is not an app you can open and point at a web player.

Media Player is for local files. Sony's Media Player app plays video from USB drives and home media servers. It is not designed for live streams.

The practical answer is a second device. A streaming stick in another HDMI port, or a smart TV's own app, will handle a provider's playlist properly.

IPTV is just delivery over the internet. Live TV on PS5 is IPTV; so is YouTube TV.

Licensed services pay rights holders, are distributed through official stores and can be cancelled like any other subscription.

Unlicensed services sell access to channels they have no right to resell. They are not in the PlayStation Store, and viewers risk losing prepaid money and exposing payment details to anonymous sellers. In the UK, EU and US, sellers have been prosecuted.

Getting the best picture and sound

Wire it. The PS5 has an Ethernet port; use it for live TV.

Check 4K and HDR settings. Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output. Most live channels are HD, so 4K matters mainly for on-demand content and some sports.

Turn off HDR tone-mapping surprises. If colours look washed out on SDR channels, set HDR to "On when supported" rather than always on.

Use the Media Remote. Sony's PS5 Media Remote gives you playback buttons and quick shortcuts, which is far nicer than a controller for TV.

A console left in rest mode is convenient, but it draws more power than a streaming stick. For daily TV, a cheap dedicated device is often the more sensible choice, with the PS5 as a capable backup.

If you are in the UK or elsewhere outside the US, the PS5's live-TV options are mostly broadcaster catch-up apps with live streams inside them, plus sports services where the rights holder has built a PlayStation app. That is enough for occasional viewing, but not a replacement for a proper TV platform, and it is worth checking your particular service on its supported-devices page before relying on the console for a big event.

When a TV app won't play

Check PlayStation Network status first. If PSN sign-in is down, Live TV on PS5 and other apps that rely on your PlayStation account will fail with vague errors. Sony publishes a status page, and it is the fastest thing to check.

Restart the app, then the console. Press the PS button, highlight the app and close it from the options menu. If that does not help, restart the console fully rather than putting it into rest mode.

Rebuild the database only as a last resort. From Safe Mode, "Clear Cache and Rebuild Database" fixes some persistent app faults on PS5. It does not delete games or saves, but it takes a while, so try the simpler steps first.

Region mismatch. A PSN account created for one country only sees that country's Store and services. That is why Live TV on PS5 may not appear on a UK account even though it exists in the US, and changing account region is not something Sony supports for an existing account.

Sharing the console for TV

Parental controls apply to TV apps too. Family Management in the PlayStation account settings lets you restrict apps by age rating and set daily play time. Live TV on PS5 already requires an adult account, but other TV apps may not.

Rest mode and power use. Leaving the PS5 in rest mode keeps it ready for TV but uses more power than a streaming stick. If the console is mainly for games, turn it off fully after watching, or reduce what it does in rest mode under Settings → System → Power Saving.

One screen, one job. The PS5 cannot run a live-TV app in the background while a game plays. For a busy household, a dedicated streaming device on the same television avoids arguments.
