Short answer: a licensed Indian TV setup in the US costs most families about $120 to $300 a year, plus a one-off $30 to $130 for a streaming device if the TV can't run the apps itself. A Hindi household with cricket can do it on one Sling Desi pack (listed at $15 a month in 2025, so about $180 a year); a South Indian household on Sling's Dakshin packs from about $120 a year. The catch is the second app: Indian networks license separately, so the bill often creeps up when one family member follows a serial the main service doesn't carry. Price that in before you compare with a "$400 for seven years" offer.

The yearly cost worksheet
Work it out line by line. Most people only count the headline subscription, which is how a $15-a-month plan turns into a $400-a-year habit.
| Line | Typical licensed choice | Published price | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main live service (Hindi) | Sling Desi Binge Plus | $15/month (2025) | $180 |
| Main live service (South Indian) | Sling Dakshin, annual | $120/year (2023 launch) | $120 |
| Main live service (South Indian, monthly) | Sling Dakshin Flex | $10/month (2025) | $120 |
| Regional languages | YuppTV language pack | Varies; check US page | Your figure |
| Second app for serials | ZEE5, SonyLIV, Sun NXT | Check US price | Your figure |
| Cricket | Willow standalone | $9.99/month or $79.99/year | $0 if bundled, else $79.99 |
| Bengali | hoichoi | $9.99/month or $79.99/year | $79.99 |
| Device (once) | Stick or box, if needed | About $30 to $130 | Spread over 3 to 5 years |
For ZEE5, SonyLIV, Sun NXT and YuppTV we've deliberately left the price for you to fill in. Those services change their US prices and promotions more often than any other line here, and a figure from six months ago would mislead you. Check each one's US plan page on the day.
Three household profiles, costed
Profile 1: the Hindi family with a cricket fan. Sling Desi Binge Plus covers live Hindi channels, SonyLIV, Disney Star's on-demand library and Willow HD. At the 2025 price that's about $180 a year, with $10 off the first month. If someone follows a Zee serial, add ZEE5. Realistic total: $180 to about $280.
Profile 2: the Telugu or Tamil family. Sling's Dakshin pack at its launch price of $120 a year carried Sun TV Network channels in four languages; Dakshin Flex at $10 a month carried Star Vijay, Star Maa and Asianet. Both included Willow. Many families then add one app, such as ZEE5, Sun NXT or aha. Realistic total: $120 to about $250. Our channel-by-channel guide shows which pack carries which network.
Profile 3: the light viewer. News on YouTube for free, one broadcaster app for serials, and Willow only during the IPL. Two months of Willow at $9.99 plus one app. Realistic total: under $100 to about $150.
A fourth profile is worth naming: the household that wants every network in every language. That one can pass $400 a year, because it means two or three Sling packs, YuppTV and several apps. It's rare that anyone actually watches all of it.
Monthly or annual: when prepaying pays
Annual plans are cheaper per month. Sling's Dakshin launch price was $20 monthly or $120 a year, half price if paid upfront. Willow's annual plan works out at $6.67 a month instead of $9.99.
But annual only wins if you'd keep paying for most of the year anyway. The break-even rule is simple: divide the annual price by the monthly price. For Willow that's eight months. If you only watch cricket during the IPL and a few big series, monthly is cheaper.
| Service | Monthly x 12 | Annual | Months to break even |
|---|---|---|---|
| Willow | $119.88 | $79.99 | 8 |
| Sling Dakshin (2023 launch) | $240 | $120 | 6 |
| hoichoi | $119.88 | $79.99 | 8 |
Two situations always favour monthly: parents visiting for a few months, and households not yet sure which service carries their serials. Our guide to monthly vs annual IPTV covers this in more depth.
A worked example: one family's year
Here's how the numbers fall for a plausible household: a Hindi-speaking couple in New Jersey, one cricket fan, one Zee serial follower, and parents arriving from India for four months over the winter.
| Months | What they pay for | Approx. monthly | Running total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan to Mar | Sling Desi Binge Plus (parents staying), ZEE5 | $15 + ZEE5 | $45 + 3 months of ZEE5 |
| Apr to May | Sling Desi Binge Plus for the IPL (Willow HD included) | $15 | $75 + ZEE5 |
| Jun to Sep | ZEE5 only; Sling paused | ZEE5 only | $75 + ZEE5 |
| Oct to Dec | Sling back on for the parents' return and winter cricket | $15 | $120 + ZEE5 |
Total: about $120 for Sling plus a year of ZEE5, rather than the $180 they'd pay leaving Sling running all year, and nobody missed anything they actually watch. The pattern works because Sling bills monthly and doesn't penalise pausing. It's the same reason a monthly plan beats an annual one for visiting parents; our streaming setup guide for seniors covers making the TV side easy for them.
The figures use Sling's 2025 published price; swap in today's, and the ZEE5 line, before you budget.
The costs people forget
- Willow twice. Several Sling South Asian packs include Willow. Plenty of households also pay for Willow directly. Check your pack's channel list and cancel one.
- A service you forgot to cancel. People subscribe for a serial's finale or an IPL season and keep paying for months. Put a calendar reminder on the renewal date as soon as you sign up.
- Devices. If your TV is more than five or six years old, its apps may be missing or slow. A streaming stick costs about $30 to $60; a Google TV Streamer $99.99; an Apple TV 4K from about $129. Amazon's 3rd-generation Fire TV Stick 4K launched at $59.99 in 2026 and runs Vega OS, so check that your Indian apps are listed in its Appstore before buying.
- Taxes. Many states charge sales tax on streaming, and the headline price usually excludes it.
- Internet. You almost certainly have this already. HD streaming needs about 5 to 10 Mbps per TV, well within most home plans; see our internet speed for IPTV guide.
What the money actually buys
Price per month isn't the whole comparison. Three features vary a lot between licensed services and decide how much use a family gets out of them:
- Catch-up and on-demand. Indian prime time lands in the US morning, so a service without catch-up or an on-demand library is worth much less to a working household. Sling's Desi packs include on-demand libraries from Disney Star and SonyLIV; YuppTV has catch-up; the broadcaster apps are on-demand by design.
- Simultaneous streams. If cricket's on in the living room while someone watches a serial upstairs, you need two streams. Each service sets its own limit, and hoichoi, for example, allows one on its monthly plan and two on the annual. Check before you assume.
- Bundled extras. A Sling pack that includes SonyLIV and Willow replaces two other bills. That's why a $15 pack can be cheaper than a $10 one plus two apps.
When comparing, count the separate subscriptions a bundle replaces, not just its headline price.
The real price of a "$400 for seven years" deal
The search results for this topic are full of sellers offering every Indian channel for $15 to $45 a month, or "5+2 years" for around $400, often with a MAG or Android box included. On paper, $400 over seven years is under $5 a month and beats everything above.
The arithmetic only works if the service lasts seven years. None of these sellers say whose channels they're licensed to carry, and the networks don't sell to them, so they operate until they're shut down or simply disappear. Indian rights holders actively pursue them: a 2024 raid in Dubai followed a Disney Star complaint against an operator with about 12,000 pirated channels, and in 2025 Star India won a Delhi High Court order to block new pirate IPTV sites and apps in real time.
So do the honest version of the sum. If a $400 prepay stops working after 18 months, which isn't unusual, you've paid about $22 a month for nothing more than the licensed services cost, and there's no one to claim a refund from. Card chargebacks usually have time limits far shorter than a multi-year plan. Our article on lifetime IPTV subscriptions works through this in detail, and how to spot an IPTV scam lists the red flags.
Paying, cancelling and getting money back
How you pay affects what happens if something goes wrong, so it's part of the cost too.
Pay by credit card or through an app store. Both give you a dispute route if you're charged for something you didn't get. Subscribing through Apple, Google, Roku or Amazon's billing also puts all your subscriptions in one list, which makes forgotten renewals easier to spot.
Know how each service cancels. Sling, Willow and the broadcaster apps let you cancel online; access usually continues to the end of the period you've paid for. Annual plans are generally not refunded part-way through, which is another reason not to prepay a year for a short visit.
Be wary of unusual payment requests. Discounts for paying in cryptocurrency, gift cards, Zelle or a personal PayPal "friends and family" transfer are a strong sign the seller doesn't want a payment you can reverse. Licensed services don't ask for any of these. Our guides on paying for IPTV with PayPal and getting an IPTV refund explain what protection each method gives.
Keep the confirmation emails. If a price changes at renewal, the original confirmation shows what you agreed to and when the term ends.
Legitimate ways to spend less
- Start with free. Indian news channels, many older serials and a lot of devotional programming stream free on official YouTube channels. For some households that removes the need for a live service entirely.
- Pick the one service that carries the serial people care about most, then see if anything is genuinely missing before adding a second.
- Use launch and first-month offers, such as Sling's $10 first month on Desi Binge Plus in 2025, but set a reminder before full price kicks in.
- Look for student pricing. Sling has run student discount programmes for its Desi packages through university portals.
- Rotate. Willow for the IPL, a regional app during a serial you follow, then cancel. Monthly billing makes this painless.
- Check what you already pay for. Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ carry a lot of Indian films and some former Hotstar shows.
How it compares with cable
For context, a traditional cable or satellite package with South Asian channel add-ons typically costs far more, because you pay for the English-language base package first. Our IPTV vs cable comparison covers the general case. For Indian TV specifically, the standalone streaming packs are the reason cutting the cord makes financial sense: you can buy the Desi or Dakshin pack without any English channels at all.
Put together, the realistic answer for most families is: one Sling or YuppTV pack, one app if needed, Willow only if it isn't already included, and the free YouTube news channels. That's about $10 to $25 a month, legal, cancellable, and it'll still work next year.
Quick answers
How much does Indian TV cost per year in the US? Most families pay about $120 to $300 a year for a licensed setup: one Sling or YuppTV pack, sometimes a broadcaster app, and Willow if it isn't bundled.
What's the cheapest legal way to get Hindi channels with cricket? A Sling Desi pack that includes Willow. Sling listed Desi Binge Plus at $15 a month in 2025, with SonyLIV and Willow HD bundled.
Is it cheaper to pay yearly? Only if you'd keep paying for most of the year. Willow's annual plan breaks even after eight months; Sling's Dakshin launch price after six.
How much does Willow cost per year? $79.99 a year, or $9.99 a month. Check first whether your Sling pack already includes it.
Do I need to buy a box for Indian TV? Usually not. Sling, YuppTV, ZEE5 and Willow run as apps on most smart TVs and streaming sticks. A new stick costs roughly $30 to $130 if your TV is too old.
Are $400 multi-year Indian IPTV plans worth it? No. They aren't licensed, often stop working long before the term ends, and there's rarely a way to get money back.
Are there free Indian channels in the US? Yes. Most Indian news channels and many broadcasters' older serials stream free on their official YouTube channels.
