Lifetime IPTV Subscriptions: What Can Honestly Be Bought Once

Short answer: no licensed live-TV service sells a lifetime subscription, and none could: channel rights are licensed for a few years at a time and priced per subscriber per month. What genuinely can be bought for life is software, such as a player app or a media server, which works with channels you pay for elsewhere. Even there, "lifetime" means the life of the product, and Plex's decision to triple its lifetime price in 2026 shows how those terms can move.

Why channels can't be sold for life

A live-TV service doesn't own the channels it carries. It signs carriage agreements with broadcasters such as Disney, Fox, NBCUniversal and Paramount, usually for a few years at a time, and pays a fee for every subscriber, every month.

That makes a lifetime price impossible to honour. A service would be promising channels it only has the right to carry until the contract ends, at a price that doesn't cover the fees it owes after the first year or two. Sports rights are even shorter and more expensive: leagues re-sell them every few years, often to a different company.

This is why the most anyone licensed offers is an annual plan, and why the large live bundles such as YouTube TV and Sling don't offer even that. See our guide to 12-month subscriptions for which services do.

What "lifetime IPTV" offers really are

Search for "IPTV lifetime subscription" and you'll find sellers promising thousands of channels, sport and films for a single payment. They fall into a few types.

Unlicensed channel services. By far the most common. They restream channels without permission, which is why they can charge so little. Selling them is illegal in the US, the UK and across the EU, and they are regularly shut down by rights holders and police. When that happens, a "lifetime" plan ends that day, with no refund.

Reseller "credits" with a lifetime label. The seller's own lifetime, not yours. Resellers buy access from a wholesale panel and can lose it at any time.

Outright scams. Some take the payment and deliver nothing, or a playlist that stops within weeks. Requests to pay by gift card, cryptocurrency or a friends-and-family transfer are a strong sign, because they remove any chance of a chargeback.

There's also a security cost. The apps these sellers supply can contain malware, and Amazon now blocks many of them on Fire TV devices. Our guide on how to spot an IPTV scam lists the warning signs.

Lifetime software that is legitimate

A one-off payment does make sense for software, because the developer isn't paying anyone per channel. These tools don't include channels: you point them at a playlist, a login or a tuner you already have legitimate access to.

Type Example Lifetime option What you supply
Media server Plex Pass Yes, $750 (five-year plan $250) Your own media, an antenna tuner
IPTV player app TiviMate Premium Yes, small one-off fee A playlist from your provider
Open-source player VLC, Kodi Free A playlist or tuner
Antenna DVR HDHomeRun, Channels DVR Hardware bought once; guide data usually yearly An antenna

Buy player apps from the developer. A "lifetime key" sold cheaply on a third-party site is often a shared or stolen licence that gets revoked. The developer's own site or the app store is the only safe source. Our TiviMate setup guide covers the official route.

Check what "lifetime" covers. Usually it means for as long as the developer sells and supports the product, on a set number of devices. If the app is discontinued, or stops working on a new operating system, the licence goes with it.

The Plex lesson

Plex has sold a lifetime pass for years, and it has been one of the few widely praised lifetime deals in home entertainment. On 1 July 2026 its price went from $250 to $750, alongside a new five-year plan at $250. Monthly and yearly prices stayed at about $7 and $70.

Plex said the change was needed to fund continued development, and existing lifetime holders kept their passes. But it illustrates two points.

Lifetime prices are set on a bet. The company is betting that the average customer won't use the product long enough to cost more than they paid. When that bet stops working, the price rises or the offer disappears.

Early buyers do well, if the company lasts. Anyone who bought a Plex lifetime pass years ago at a far lower price has had outstanding value. That only held because Plex stayed in business. The same maths applied to a small, anonymous seller is much less comforting.

The one genuinely lifetime channel source

If the goal is live channels without a monthly bill, an aerial is the closest thing to a real lifetime subscription. In the US, local ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and PBS stations broadcast free over the air, in HD, and a one-off antenna purchase receives them for as long as they broadcast.

Add a network tuner such as an HDHomeRun and those channels can be streamed to televisions, phones and tablets around the home through player apps. Guide data and DVR features may carry a small yearly fee, but the channels themselves cost nothing. Our guide to antennas versus IPTV explains reception and what you can expect in your area.

Free, ad-supported streaming services such as Pluto TV, Tubi and The Roku Channel add hundreds more live channels at no cost, legally, though their line-ups change over time.

Working out whether lifetime pays

For legitimate software, the maths is simple. Divide the lifetime price by the annual price to get the break-even point in years.

Plex, at $750 against $70 a year, needs more than ten years of use to pay off. The old $250 price broke even in under four. A player app whose lifetime licence costs three or four times its annual fee pays off in three or four years.

Then ask three questions. Will I still use this in that many years? Will the developer still support it? Will it run on my next device? If all three are likely yes, lifetime is good value. If any is doubtful, pay yearly and keep the option to leave.

For channel access, there is no calculation to do: licensed services are monthly or yearly, and a lifetime offer for channels tells you the seller isn't licensed.

Quick answers

Are lifetime IPTV subscriptions legal? Lifetime licences for player software are legal. Lifetime access to premium channels is not something any licensed provider sells, so such offers are almost always unlicensed.

What happens to a lifetime IPTV plan if the service shuts down? It ends, with no refund. Unlicensed services are shut down regularly, and buyers have no recourse.

Is the Plex lifetime pass still available? Yes, at $750 since July 2026, with a five-year plan at $250 and monthly or yearly plans as alternatives.

Is TiviMate lifetime worth it? If you use it regularly with a legitimate playlist and bought it from the developer, it usually pays for itself within a few years. It doesn't include any channels.

Is there a free lifetime way to watch live TV? An antenna receives local broadcast channels free for as long as they broadcast, and free ad-supported streaming services add more.

Why do lifetime deals ask for crypto or gift cards? Because those payments can't be reversed. It's a strong sign that the seller doesn't expect to be around to honour the deal.
