Cheapest Way to Watch ESPN in 2026: Every Option per Month

Short answer: if you want the live ESPN channel, the cheapest legal way is Sling Essentials at $19.99 a month, which carries ESPN and ESPN2. If you only want ESPN's streaming-only events, ESPN Select is cheaper at $13.99, but it doesn't include the ESPN channel at all, so no Monday Night Football. The non-obvious catch: ESPN Unlimited's annual plan only beats paying monthly if you'd keep it ten months or more, and most fans don't.

Prices went up on 17 September 2026, so a lot of the comparisons still floating around are a couple of dollars out. Here's every legal route ranked by what it really costs per month.

Fubo's Sports and News plan and DirecTV MySports also land in the $60 to $65 range after their first-month offers. They make sense if you want local channels and other sports networks too. For ESPN alone, they don't.

Select or Unlimited: which ESPN are you paying for?

This is where most people overspend or, worse, pay for the wrong thing. "ESPN" now means two different products.

ESPN Select is what used to be called ESPN+. It's ESPN's streaming-only content: thousands of college games that never reach a TV channel, a lot of NHL, some soccer, PGA Tour coverage and replays. It does not include the ESPN or ESPN2 channels, so the big games aren't there. No Monday Night Football, no College GameDay, no NBA on ESPN.

ESPN Unlimited is everything: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, ESPN Deportes, SEC Network, ACC Network, the ESPN on ABC games, NFL Network and all of Select. No cable login needed.

Rule of thumb: if the event you want is listed on a TV channel, you need Unlimited or a live TV service. If it's listed as "ESPN+" or "ESPN Select" only, the cheaper plan will do. Our guide to ESPN's streaming plans goes deeper into what sits in each.

Sling Essentials: what $19.99 does and doesn't get you

Sling launched Essentials in 2026 as a stripped-down plan aimed squarely at people who want ESPN without paying for a full bundle. It carries ESPN and ESPN2 live, which covers Monday Night Football on ESPN, most of the NBA on ESPN and plenty of college football.

What it leaves out matters, though:

  • SEC Network and ACC Network. If your team plays in either conference, a good share of its games air there. Essentials won't show them.
  • NFL Network. Now part of ESPN Unlimited, not of Essentials.
  • ESPN Select content. Sling gives you the channels, not ESPN's streaming-only events.
  • Local channels. No ABC, so the Monday games simulcast on ABC need an antenna.

Sling also no longer sells its day and week passes. Older guides that recommend a $5 pass for a single game are out of date; Sling's site says the passes have been withdrawn.

Annual plan or month-to-month?

ESPN discounts the annual plans, but only by about two months' worth. ESPN Unlimited's $319.99 a year equals ten months at $31.99. So the annual plan only pays off if you'd otherwise keep it at least ten months out of twelve.

Fan type Months needed Unlimited monthly Unlimited annual Sling Essentials
MNF only 5 (Sept to Jan) $159.95 $319.99 $99.95
College football, SEC or ACC team 5 (Aug to Jan) $159.95 $319.99 Misses conference network
NBA season 9 (Oct to June) $287.91 $319.99 $179.91
Year-round, several sports 12 $383.88 $319.99 $239.88

The pattern is clear. For one sport, pay monthly and cancel between seasons. Buy the annual plan only if you watch ESPN across several sports and genuinely never cancel. ESPN Select works the same way: $139.99 a year is ten months at $13.99.

College football is the trickiest sport because games are spread across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ABC, SEC Network, ACC Network and Select. Our conference-by-conference guide shows where each league's games land. For the NFL side of things, our piece on the cheapest way to watch the NFL works the same maths across every network.

Check what you already pay for

Before buying anything, look at your existing bills. Disney sells ESPN inside several bundles, and some of them come free or discounted with phone and internet plans.

  • The Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Select bundle rose to about $22 a month with ads in September 2026. If you already pay for Disney+ and Hulu separately, switching to the bundle can add Select for almost nothing.
  • Older "Legacy" Disney bundles with ESPN Select rose to $27.99.
  • Hulu + Live TV subscribers already get ESPN Unlimited inside the package. Don't buy it twice.
  • Phone and broadband perks. Some carrier plans include a Disney bundle with ESPN Select. Check your account's perks page; the specific offers change often.

If you've got the Select bundle and realise you need the ESPN channel, upgrading to the Unlimited version of the Disney bundle, at about $36, costs only a little more than Unlimited alone.

Time your sign-up and cancellation

Since none of these plans has a contract, the cheapest ESPN is often the one you only pay for in the right weeks. A few habits make a real difference over a year.

  • Start on the day you need it. Billing runs from your sign-up date, not the calendar month. Joining Sling Essentials the morning of your first Monday game gives you a full 30 days from that point.
  • Cancel straight after subscribing. With ESPN's own app and with Sling, cancelling stops the next charge but keeps access until the paid period ends. Doing it immediately means you can't forget.
  • Watch the gaps between seasons. There's a quiet stretch for most ESPN viewers between the NBA Finals in June and college football in late August. Two or three skipped months is $40 to $96 saved, depending on the plan.
  • Don't stack. If you sign up for a live TV service for a big month, such as the college football playoffs, pause or cancel ESPN Unlimited for that month. Every live service listed above already includes ESPN.
  • Read the first-month price carefully. Fubo, DirecTV and YouTube TV often advertise a lower first month. The second month is what you'll keep paying.

One device note: ESPN's own app and Sling both run on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV and most smart TVs, so the cheapest plan doesn't usually mean buying new hardware. If an older TV's built-in app won't install, a $30 to $50 streaming stick fixes that.

Mistakes that cost ESPN viewers money

Most overspending on ESPN comes from a handful of predictable mix-ups.

  1. Buying Select and expecting Monday Night Football. It's the single most common complaint. Select is the streaming-only tier; the ESPN channel isn't in it. Check where your game is listed before paying.
  2. Paying for ESPN twice. Hulu + Live TV includes ESPN Unlimited, and every live TV service carries the ESPN channels. If you subscribe to one of those, cancel any separate ESPN plan. Many live TV logins also unlock the ESPN app on your devices, so you don't need a second subscription to watch there.
  3. Taking the annual plan for one sport. As the table above shows, it only pays off from ten months up.
  4. Forgetting the conference networks. SEC Network and ACC Network sit only in ESPN Unlimited and the live TV services. Sling Essentials is cheaper, but if your team plays on those channels, it's money spent on the wrong plan.
  5. Keeping the subscription through the dead months. Most fans have at least two or three months a year with nothing they want on ESPN. That's $64 to $96 a year left on the table with Unlimited.

A quick monthly check helps: look at what you watched on ESPN in the past four weeks. If the answer is nothing, cancel; you can rejoin in a minute when your sport returns.

Can you get ESPN free?

Partly. ESPN puts a share of its biggest events on ABC, which is free with an antenna: some Monday Night Football games, NBA weekend games and the Finals, college football Saturdays, and the Super Bowl when it's ABC's turn. If you can get ABC over the air, that alone covers more ESPN-produced sport than people expect.

There's no legal free stream of the ESPN channel itself, and ESPN doesn't offer a free trial of Unlimited. Sites that promise free ESPN streams, and cheap IPTV subscriptions that list ESPN among thousands of channels, are unlicensed. They tend to buffer or vanish during the exact games you want, and paying them gives you no protection. At $19.99 for the legal channel, the saving isn't worth the risk. Our full rundown of legal ways to get ESPN covers the less common routes too.
