TiviMate Tips and Tricks Most Users Miss (2026)

Short answer: the TiviMate tricks worth learning aren't the ones on most lists. Adding an EPG and making a favourites group is setup, not a trick. The useful ones live in long-press menus and the remote-control settings: a one-button jump back to the last channel, per-channel decoder and guide fixes, recording padding so you don't lose the final minutes of a match, and a backup file you'll badly want now that TiviMate's Google Play listing comes and goes. Most need Premium; a few work on the free version.

Two things to know first

Menu names drift between versions. TiviMate has been on the 5.x branch through 2026 (5.3.x builds were the latest reported in June). The paths below match recent builds as described by users, but the developer, Armobsoft FZE, renames and moves settings now and then. If a path doesn't match, the setting is almost always one level up or down in the same section.

Long-press is the hidden menu. Holding OK (or pressing the Menu button, where your remote has one) on a channel, a group, a guide entry or the player opens a context menu that most people never find. Half the tricks below start there. On a Fire TV remote, Menu is the three-line button; on Google TV remotes without one, hold the centre button.

If you haven't added a playlist yet, start with our TiviMate setup guide. This page assumes TiviMate is already running with a playlist from a service you pay for legitimately. TiviMate itself contains no channels, and none of these tricks changes that.

Remote and navigation tricks

1. Jump back to the last channel. Cable boxes have a "Last" or "Recall" button; most streaming remotes don't. In full-screen playback, TiviMate's default for the Right button in many builds is "previous channel". If yours does something else, open Settings → Remote control and assign the previous-channel action to a button you don't use. During a game with two matches on, this is the single most-used shortcut in the app.

2. Use OK for recent channels. A short press of OK during playback brings up the channel list with a recent-channels view. It's quicker than scrolling back through a group when you've been hopping between three or four channels.

3. Fix the "two presses to watch" annoyance. By default, selecting a channel in the guide plays it in a preview window, and you need a second press to go full screen. If that irritates you, turn off Preview, Auto play and Stay on guide under Settings → Appearance → TV guide. One press then goes straight to full screen.

4. Reverse or repurpose channel up/down. Some people expect Up to mean a higher channel number, others the opposite. The remote-control settings let you reverse the direction, or set Up/Down to open the list instead of changing channel, which stops accidental zapping when you knock the remote.

5. Type a channel number. If your remote has number keys (many Google TV and Shield remotes don't, but cheap Bluetooth and IR remotes do), entering digits jumps straight to that channel. That only makes sense once you've numbered your channels sensibly; see trick 19.

Guide tricks

6. Match a blank guide row by hand. An empty row means the channel's ID in your playlist doesn't match an ID in the guide file. Long-press the channel, choose to edit it, and pick the right guide entry manually. TiviMate remembers the match. This fixes far more "no EPG" complaints than refreshing ever will. Our EPG not loading guide covers the cases where the whole guide is empty.

7. Shift times per source, not the TV clock. Programmes an hour out? Each guide source has its own time offset in the playlist's EPG settings. Changing the device clock breaks recordings and catch-up; changing the offset doesn't.

8. Keep fewer guide days. TiviMate can hold a long guide window, but on a Fire TV Stick or a budget Google TV, fourteen days for thousands of channels makes start-up crawl. Three or four days is plenty for live viewing. If you rely on catch-up, keep a day or two of past programmes as well.

9. Search the guide, not just channels. The search screen finds programme titles in the EPG, so you can type a team name and see every upcoming match across your channels, then set reminders or recordings straight from the results.

Playback fixes per channel

These matter because a few bad channels shouldn't force a global setting that makes the good ones worse.

Symptom Try Where
Black screen with sound, or coloured blocks Software decoder for that channel only Player menu during playback
Judder on sport and panning shots Auto frame rate on Settings → Playback
Short stalls every few minutes Larger buffer Settings → Playback
Wrong language commentary Pick the audio track; set a preferred language Player menu / Settings → Playback
Whole playlist refuses to load, error 403 or 401 The user-agent your service specifies Settings → Playlists → your playlist

10. Software decoder, one channel at a time. Hardware decoding is faster and cooler, and it's right for nearly everything. When a single channel shows black or blocky video, switch just that channel to the software decoder from the player menu. TiviMate keeps the choice for that channel. Setting software decoding globally will make a cheap stick stutter on HD.

11. Auto frame rate, with a caveat. Matching the TV's refresh rate to the stream (50 or 60 fps) removes judder on football and panning shots. The catch is a second or two of blank screen while the TV switches modes on each channel change. If you zap a lot between 50 and 60 fps channels, that blink gets old; some people leave it off and accept a little judder.

12. Buffer: bigger isn't free. A larger buffer rides out network dips, but it puts you further behind live and slows channel changes. If you're also following a match on a phone, you'll notice. Fix Wi-Fi first: a wired connection or 5 GHz band solves more stalls than any buffer setting.

13. User-agent only when told. Some legitimate services that issue M3U or Xtream logins check which app is connecting. If your service's own help page specifies a user-agent string, set it on that playlist. Don't copy strings from forums to get around a block: if a service rejects a player deliberately, that's its decision to make.

Recording and catch-up tricks

All Premium, and recording obviously depends on your service allowing it.

14. Pad every recording. Live events overrun and guide data drifts. When scheduling, use Start earlier and End later. Five minutes before and fifteen to thirty after is sensible for sport; a match with extra time needs more. It costs up to a gigabyte of storage and saves the ending.

15. Record a series, not an episode. From a guide entry, choose to record the series instead of the single episode. Check the scheduled list under Settings → Recording occasionally, because a renamed programme in the guide can break the match.

16. Send recordings to USB or a network share. Internal storage on a Fire TV Stick or a TCL Google TV fills fast: an HD hour can run to 2-3 GB. Point Recording storage at a USB drive (via an OTG adapter on sticks) or a network folder on a NAS or PC. A full internal disk is a common reason TiviMate starts misbehaving.

17. Use catch-up instead of recording. If your service offers catch-up on a channel (TiviMate shows an icon on past programmes), you can play anything from the window without recording it. It also lets you restart a programme you joined late.

Multi-view without the frustration

Multi-view (Premium) puts two to four channels on screen at once. It's the feature people most often say "doesn't work", and it's usually the hardware rather than the app.

Open it from the player. During playback, press Menu or long-press OK and choose multi-view, then pick a layout. Each extra tile is added from the channel list.

Know your device's limit. Every tile is a separate stream your device has to decode at the same time. Rough guide, based on what owners commonly report:

Device Realistic multi-view
Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4 HD tiles, usually smooth
Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Google TV Streamer 2 comfortably, 3-4 depending on stream format
Fire TV Stick Lite, budget Google TV sets 2 at best; expect stutter

Check your stream allowance. Four tiles use four connections. If your service allows two simultaneous streams, tiles three and four will fail or knock another device in the house off. That's the service's limit working as designed; our multiple connections explainer covers how it's counted.

Sound follows the highlighted tile. Move the highlight to switch commentary. For a big game, put it in the large tile of an uneven layout and keep the others as silent scoreboards.

Tidying thousands of channels

18. Hide groups before channels. Hiding a whole group from its long-press menu clears hundreds of channels at once. Hiding individual channels afterwards is for the stragglers. Hidden items stay in the playlist and come back if you need them.

19. Renumber to mimic a cable line-up. Premium lets you reorder and renumber channels. Giving your twenty real channels the numbers 1-20 makes number entry and up/down zapping usable again.

20. Set the start-up group. Make TiviMate open on Favourites rather than "All channels". Small change, every single day.

21. Merge two playlists into one guide. With Premium, a second playlist (for example, a home tuner exposed as M3U alongside a paid service) appears in the same grid. Combined favourites across playlists are the payoff.

22. Lock, don't just hide. Parental control puts a PIN on specific groups or channels. Hiding is trivial to undo; a PIN isn't.

Backup: the trick that saves the rest

Everything above takes an hour to rebuild. Premium includes Backup data and Restore data in the general settings. The backup file holds playlists, guide sources, favourites, hidden groups, numbering and settings.

Two habits make it worth something:

  • Save it off the device. A backup sitting in the same box's internal storage dies with the box. Save to USB or a network folder, or copy it to a phone.
  • Back up before any reinstall. TiviMate's Google Play listing disappeared for many users in late July 2026. A clean reinstall is exactly when you may struggle to find a safe copy or reactivate Premium. Our TiviMate status guide has the device-by-device picture.

A backup also moves your whole layout to a new device in two minutes, which is the best reason to make one before upgrading from an old stick.

Tips we'd ignore

  • "Use a VPN for better TiviMate performance." A VPN adds a hop and usually slows streams. It doesn't fix buffering caused by Wi-Fi or a busy server.
  • "Clear cache weekly." TiviMate's cache rebuilds itself. Clearing data wipes your setup. Neither is routine maintenance.
  • "Get Premium unlocked free." Modified APKs don't update, can carry malware and hold your playlist login. Premium has been around $9.99 a year or about $34 lifetime in 2026; details in Is TiviMate free?
  • "External player for better quality." Routing channels to another player rarely improves picture; the stream is the stream. It's useful only for a format TiviMate genuinely can't play.

Quick answers

How do I go back to the previous channel in TiviMate? In full-screen playback, Right does it by default in many builds. Otherwise assign the action to any button under Settings → Remote control.

Why do I need to press OK twice to watch a channel? Guide preview is on. Turn off Preview, Auto play and Stay on guide under Settings → Appearance → TV guide.

How do I stop recordings cutting off the end? Use the Start earlier and End later padding when scheduling; add 15-30 minutes after live sport.

Can I fix a black screen on just one channel? Yes. Switch that channel to the software decoder from the player menu. TiviMate remembers it per channel.

Where are TiviMate backups saved? Wherever you choose when creating one. Pick USB storage or a network folder so the file survives the device.

Do these tricks work on the free version? Remote mapping, guide tweaks, decoder and hiding groups do. Recording, catch-up, multi-view, multiple playlists and backup need Premium.

Can I record to a NAS? Yes, if your device can reach a network share; choose it as the recording storage location.
