Short answer: for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada TV in the US, the licensed choice comes down to two families of channels. Sun TV Network channels (Sun TV, Gemini, Surya, Udaya and their sister channels) have been carried in the US by Sling's South Indian "Dakshin" packs, and Disney Star's southern channels (Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet) by Sling's Dakshin Flex, with YuppTV covering many other regional channels. The catch: Zee's and Colors' southern channels generally aren't part of those packs, so a Zee Tamil or Zee Telugu household also needs the ZEE5 app, and no single subscription covers all four languages from every network.
At a glance
South Indian TV in the US
| Sun TV, Gemini, Surya, Udaya | Sling Dakshin packs (from about $20/month when launched) |
| Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet | Sling Dakshin Flex (about $10/month in 2025) |
| Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Keralam | ZEE5 app, on demand |
| Wider regional mix | YuppTV, sold by language |
| Prime time in India | About 10:30 a.m. Eastern until Nov 1, then 9:30 a.m. |
| Avoid | "Every channel" boxes and multi-year prepay |
Start with the network, not the language
Most people search by language: "Tamil channels", "Telugu channels". Licensing doesn't work that way. In South India, four network groups own most of what people watch, and each one sells its US rights separately:
- Sun TV Network: Sun TV and KTV (Tamil), Gemini TV (Telugu), Surya TV (Malayalam), Udaya TV (Kannada), plus music, movie, comedy and kids channels in each language.
- JioStar (Disney Star): Star Vijay (Tamil), Star Maa (Telugu), Asianet (Malayalam), Star Suvarna (Kannada), and the Colors channels such as Colors Kannada and Colors Tamil.
- Zee: Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Keralam, Zee Kannada.
- Independents: ETV (Telugu), Mazhavil Manorama (Malayalam), Kalaignar and Polimer (Tamil), Flowers (Malayalam) and many news channels.
So the useful first question isn't "which app has Tamil?" It's "which network makes the serials my family follows?" Once you know that, the right US service is usually obvious. Our broader guide to Indian TV in the US by language and budget covers Hindi as well; this one stays in the South.
Where each South Indian channel family streams legally
The table below maps the big channel families to their licensed US source. Package names and contents change when rights deals are renewed, so treat it as a starting point and confirm on the service's channel list before paying.
| Channels | Language | US source | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun TV, KTV, Sun Music | Tamil | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Live channels |
| Gemini TV, Gemini Movies | Telugu | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Live channels |
| Surya TV | Malayalam | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Live channels |
| Udaya TV | Kannada | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Live channels |
| Star Vijay | Tamil | Sling Dakshin Flex | Live plus on-demand |
| Star Maa | Telugu | Sling Dakshin Flex | Live plus on-demand |
| Asianet | Malayalam | Sling Dakshin Flex | Live plus on-demand |
| Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Keralam, Zee Kannada | All four | ZEE5 | Episodes on demand |
| ETV, Mazhavil Manorama, Kalaignar and others | Various | YuppTV packs; some broadcaster apps | Live and catch-up, varies |
| Colors Kannada, Colors Tamil | Kannada, Tamil | Not reliably sold in the US | Check YuppTV and Sling first |
Two details trip people up. First, Sling's 2023 launch announcement described it as the only US TV provider carrying 19 Sun Group channels, so if Sun TV serials matter, the Dakshin packs are the obvious route rather than a general "Indian IPTV" seller. Second, the JioStar app (JioHotstar) isn't offered in the US, and accounts that claim to unlock it from here aren't legitimate.
Sling's Dakshin packs and YuppTV, explained
Sling sells South Indian channels as standalone international packs. You don't need its English-language Orange or Blue base service to buy them.
Dakshin and Dakshin Mega. When Sling launched them in January 2023, Dakshin cost $20 a month or $120 a year, and Dakshin Mega $25 a month or $200 a year. Both were built around the Sun Group channels across all four languages, with Willow cricket included and a South Indian film library called Simply South. The yearly price is the one to notice: $120 works out at $10 a month.
Dakshin Flex. Sling's 2025 marketing listed Dakshin Flex at $10 a month, with Star Vijay, Star Maa and Asianet, Disney Star's on-demand library, Simply South and Willow HD.
Prices quoted here come from Sling's own announcements at the time, not today's checkout, and Sling regularly renames and reshuffles international packs. Before subscribing, open the pack's page and search the channel list for the two or three channels you actually watch. If a pack is missing one, a cheaper pack plus one app often beats a bigger pack.
Sling runs on Roku, Fire TV, Google TV, Apple TV, Samsung and LG TVs, phones and web browsers, so the TV you already own will almost certainly work.
YuppTV for the channels Sling doesn't carry
YuppTV is an Indian-owned streaming service built for people living outside India. Its packs are sold by language: Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada each have their own pages. It also has a catch-up feature, so you can play a serial that aired in India's evening when it suits you.
It's the place to look for the channels that fall between the big network deals: smaller entertainment channels, devotional channels and many regional news channels. Channel lists differ by language pack and change over time, and YuppTV's prices move often with promotions, so check the live price on its US pack page rather than a review.
A sensible test: list the channels you want, open YuppTV's pack for your language and tick them off. If the network behind your favourite serial is Sun or Star, Sling may cover it more cheaply. If it's an independent channel, YuppTV is more likely to have it.
Apps for serials and films: ZEE5, Sun NXT, aha and others
A lot of South Indian viewing is serials and new films, not live TV. For that, the broadcasters' own apps are often better than a channel pack:
- ZEE5 is the route for Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Keralam and Zee Kannada serials, plus Zee's films. It doesn't give you the live channels in the same way a Sling pack does, but serial episodes are the main draw.
- Sun NXT is Sun TV Network's own app for its serials and a large Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film library. Check whether live channels are part of the US offer when you sign up, because that varies by region.
- aha focuses on Telugu and Tamil films and originals. Confirm it's listed in your US app store before paying.
- ETV Win and manoramaMAX are the apps for ETV's Telugu shows and Mazhavil Manorama's Malayalam shows respectively; check availability in the US app store.
- Disney+ and Hulu have carried former Hotstar shows and some Star content in the US, title by title.
Telugu and Tamil cinema also turns up on Netflix and Prime Video with English subtitles, often four to eight weeks after theatrical release. If new films matter more than serials, check those before adding an Indian app.
Time zones: catch-up beats live for most serials
Indian prime-time serials air roughly between 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. India time. India doesn't change its clocks, but the US does, so the gap moves twice a year.
| India time | US Eastern (until Nov 1, 2026) | US Eastern (from Nov 1) | US Pacific (until Nov 1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:00 p.m. | 9:30 a.m. | 8:30 a.m. | 6:30 a.m. |
| 8:00 p.m. | 10:30 a.m. | 9:30 a.m. | 7:30 a.m. |
| 9:00 p.m. | 11:30 a.m. | 10:30 a.m. | 8:30 a.m. |
| 10:00 p.m. | 12:30 p.m. | 11:30 a.m. | 9:30 a.m. |
For most working households that means serials land mid-morning. Pick a service with catch-up or on-demand episodes (Sling's on-demand libraries, YuppTV's catch-up or the broadcaster's app) and watch in your evening instead. For live events, such as a film-awards night, a Bigg Boss finale or a cricket match, the table tells you when to switch on. Our catch-up TV explainer covers how replay windows work.
What a South Indian setup costs per year
Rough yearly totals for common setups, using the launch or published prices quoted above. Your figure will differ with promotions and pack changes, but the shape of the comparison holds.
| Setup | What it covers | Approx. per year |
|---|---|---|
| Sling Dakshin, annual | Sun Group channels in four languages, Willow (at launch) | About $120 |
| Sling Dakshin Flex, monthly | Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet, Willow HD | About $120 |
| Dakshin annual + ZEE5 | Sun plus Zee serials | About $120 plus ZEE5's US price |
| Dakshin Mega, annual | Bigger Sun line-up plus extras | About $200 |
| Two Sling packs + one app | Sun and Star channels, Zee serials | Roughly $250 to $350 |
Compare that with the $230 to $400 multi-year deals that unlicensed sellers advertise. The licensed route isn't wildly more expensive for a single-language household, and you can cancel any month. The places it does get expensive are multi-language homes that want every network, and that's where it pays to drop the pack you watch least.
One saving people miss: if you already pay Willow separately for cricket, check whether your South Indian pack includes it. Paying twice is common. Our guide to 12-month plans covers when prepaying a year is worth it.
Getting it onto the TV
All of the licensed services here are ordinary apps. There's no box to buy, no portal address to type and no playlist file. In practice:
- Use the TV's own platform if it's recent. Roku TVs, Google TV sets (Sony, TCL, Hisense), Samsung and LG all list Sling, and most list YuppTV and ZEE5. Search the TV's app store first.
- Otherwise add a stick. A Roku, Google TV Streamer or Fire TV Stick covers every app above. If you buy one of Amazon's newer Vega OS Fire TV sticks, search the Appstore for each app you need before you commit, because Vega runs a narrower app catalogue. Our box vs stick vs smart TV guide compares the options.
- Sign in on a phone first. Most of these apps show a code on the TV that you enter on a phone or laptop, which is far easier than typing a password with a remote.
- Set the language once. Sling and YuppTV both let you favourite channels; put the three your family uses on top so nobody has to scroll a guide.
Picks by household
Tamil household, mostly Sun TV serials: a Sling Dakshin pack, annual if you're sure. Add ZEE5 only if someone follows a Zee Tamil serial.
Telugu household split between Star Maa and Gemini: this is the awkward one, because the two sit in different Sling packs. Compare a bigger Dakshin pack against Dakshin Flex plus ZEE5 or aha; one of the combinations will cover everything for less.
Malayalam household: Asianet (Dakshin Flex) plus Surya (Dakshin) covers the two biggest entertainment channels. For Mazhavil Manorama shows, add its app. Malayalam news (Asianet News, Manorama News, Mathrubhumi) is widely free on official YouTube channels.
Kannada household: Udaya through Sling, Zee Kannada through ZEE5. Colors Kannada and Star Suvarna are harder; check YuppTV's Kannada pack before assuming they're available.
Cricket in any of the above: Willow has been bundled into several of these packs. If yours includes it, don't pay for Willow separately. Our cricket in the USA guide explains what Willow carries.
Why the "every South Indian channel" box isn't the answer
Search for this topic and the first page is mostly sellers promising 10,000 to 15,000 Indian channels in every language for $15 a month, or a "5+2 year" plan for around $400 with a box thrown in. None of them say where their licences come from, and the networks above don't sell their channels that way.
The practical problems are the ones that matter to a family. The service can vanish mid-subscription, and a seven-year prepay to an operator you can't identify is money you won't get back. Sun TV, Disney Star and Zee all actively pursue piracy of their content, and Star India has won court orders in Delhi that block rogue IPTV sites and apps in real time. Boxes from these sellers often run outdated Android builds that never get security updates.
The licensed route costs more per month, but often less than people expect: a Dakshin annual pack plus one app is roughly $15 to $25 a month all in. Our guides on spotting an IPTV scam and IPTV legality in the US go into the details.
Quick answers
Which service has Sun TV in the USA? Sling's South Indian Dakshin packs carry Sun TV Network channels, including Sun TV, Gemini, Surya and Udaya. Sun NXT, Sun's own app, carries its serials and films on demand.
Can I watch Star Vijay or Star Maa in the US? Yes. Sling's Dakshin Flex pack has carried Star Vijay, Star Maa and Asianet, with Disney Star on-demand content. JioHotstar itself isn't available in the US.
How do I watch Zee Tamil or Zee Telugu serials in America? Through the ZEE5 app, which carries Zee's southern serials on demand in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
Is YuppTV good for Telugu channels? YuppTV sells dedicated Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada packs with catch-up, and it's often where smaller regional and news channels turn up. Compare its channel list with Sling's before paying.
What time do Tamil serials air in the US? An 8 p.m. India-time serial airs at 10:30 a.m. Eastern until Nov 1, 2026, and 9:30 a.m. Eastern after the clocks change. Most people use catch-up instead.
Is there one subscription with all South Indian channels? No licensed service carries every network. Sun, Disney Star and Zee sell their US rights separately, so most households combine one channel pack with one app.
Where can I watch Malayalam news live in the US? Asianet News, Manorama News and Mathrubhumi News stream live on their official YouTube channels for free, and some appear in YuppTV's Malayalam pack. A smart TV's YouTube app is the simplest way to put them on the big screen.
Do I need a cable subscription to buy Sling's South Indian packs? No. Sling's international packs can be bought on their own, without an English-language base package, and cancelled month to month.
Are cheap Indian IPTV boxes with all channels legal? Generally not. They don't disclose licences, can stop working without notice and often ask for multi-year prepayment with no refund route.
South Indian channel rights in the US are renewed network by network, and Sling and YuppTV change pack names, contents and prices regularly. Prices quoted are from each service's announcements at the time stated. Checked October 2026.
