Short answer: no, Sling TV doesn't have a free trial in 2026, and it hasn't offered a standard one for several years. The cheap workaround many people relied on, the $4.99 Day Pass, was withdrawn in early October 2026. What's left is a free tier (Sling Freestream) that lets you test the app, a $19.99 entry plan, and a first-month discount on the bigger plans. Used in the right order, they let you try Sling properly for about $20.

Why there's no Sling free trial
Sling ran 3-day and 7-day free trials for years, and coverage at the time put the last of them around early 2022. Since then it has replaced trials with promotions: a discounted first month, hardware bundles, and for 14 months a paid Day Pass. Its own site now pushes Freestream as the no-cost option.
The reasons aren't mysterious. Sling pays programmers per subscriber, so every free week costs it real money, and trials attract people who sign up for one big game and leave. Most live TV services have shortened or dropped trials for the same reason. If a page tells you Sling has a "limited-time free trial" today, check the date on it before you believe it.
Five ways to try Sling, cheapest first
| Option | Cost | What it tests | What it doesn't |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Sling Freestream | Free | The app on your devices, the guide, menus, streaming quality, a small DVR | ESPN, TNT, FOX, NBC, CNN or any paid channel |
| 2. Sling Essentials or Select | $19.99 for a month | Real paid channels (ESPN or FOX News/NFL Network), DVR, streams | The full Orange or Blue lineup |
| 3. Orange or Blue first-month offer | Commonly ~$23 (50% off), when offered | The plan you'd actually keep, including locals on Blue | Orange & Blue, unless that's the offer you take |
| 4. Student discount | $10 off a month for six months | Same as 3, cheaper for verified students | Not short-term |
| 5. A rival's free trial | Free | Whether you need Sling at all | Sling specifically |
Start with Freestream. It costs nothing and takes a couple of minutes. It runs in the same Sling app, so it tells you whether the app works well on your TV, whether the guide suits you and whether your connection streams smoothly. This is also where you find out if the app is sluggish on an old streaming stick, which no paid plan will fix.
Then pay for one cheap month. If your main reason for Sling is ESPN, take Essentials. If it's FOX News, NFL Network or FS1, take Select. At $19.99 these are cheaper than the old first-month discounts on Orange or Blue, and they're the plans that give Sling its price advantage over rivals anyway.
Only then try Orange or Blue. Wait for a first-month offer if you can; dealnews and other trackers reported 50% off the first month as Sling's most consistent promotion through 2026. Check the price at your ZIP code, because Blue costs roughly $4 to $9 more in markets where Sling carries local stations. Our Sling TV packages guide explains what each plan includes.
A 30-day test plan
A paid month only works as a trial if you actually test the things that will annoy you later. Here's a checklist worth running in the first week, so you can cancel with three weeks to spare if it fails.
| Check | How | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Your channels at your ZIP | Open the guide and look for each channel you care about | Locals and some sports channels vary by market |
| Simultaneous streams | Play on two devices at once | Orange and Essentials allow one stream; Blue and Select three |
| DVR | Record a game and a series; check the 50-hour meter | Sports fill 50 hours fast; Unlimited DVR is $5 extra |
| Picture quality on your TV | Watch a live game on the big screen, not a phone | Sports motion shows quality differences most |
| Every device in the house | Sign in on each TV, phone and tablet | Older sticks and some smart TVs run the app poorly |
| Away from home | Try the app on mobile data or at a friend's | Some content is restricted outside your home area |
If two or more of these fail, cancel and move on. Sling's strength is price, not polish, and the bigger services are better at several of these items.
How to cancel before you're charged again
Sling has no contract and no cancellation fee, and when you cancel your service continues until the end of the period you've paid for. It doesn't refund partial months, so there's no penalty for cancelling on day one; you keep the month either way. Where you cancel depends on how you paid:
| You paid through | Where to cancel |
|---|---|
| Sling directly (card or PayPal) | sling.com in a web browser: sign in, open your account, choose to change or cancel your subscription and confirm. The Sling TV app on your TV can't do it. |
| Apple (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV) | Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Sling |
| Google Play | Play Store app, profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions |
| Amazon (Fire TV) | Amazon account, Memberships and Subscriptions |
| Roku | my.roku.com, Manage your subscriptions (or press * on the Sling app's tile on the Roku home screen) |
Keep the cancellation email, and check your account shows an end date. If you prepaid for three months, you can't get the unused part back, which is the main reason not to prepay while you're testing. For the full cost picture once a test turns into a subscription, see Sling TV cost.
Other ways to cut the first bill
None of these is a trial, but each knocks something off the cost of finding out whether Sling suits you. Terms change, so treat them as things to look for at checkout rather than guarantees.
- Premium add-on intros. Sling's deals page has offered Paramount+ with Showtime, AMC+ and STARZ at $5 for the first month. If you were going to try one of those anyway, adding it to a Sling test month is cheaper than subscribing separately for a month.
- Referral credit. Existing subscribers can refer friends for account credit, reported at $20. If someone in your household already has Sling, ask them for a link before you sign up.
- Discounted gift cards. Retailers occasionally sell Sling gift cards below face value. They're only worth buying if you're fairly sure you'll stay past the first month.
- Hardware bundles. Sling has periodically bundled AirTV devices or streaming sticks with prepaid plans. Run the numbers: a prepay you can't cancel early is a poor trade for a device you could buy for $30 to $50.
- Pick the right month. If you're testing for sports, subscribe in a month with the games you care about. A September test of Essentials covers college football and Monday Night Football; a July test covers almost nothing on ESPN that matters.
The one thing not to do is test with Orange & Blue at full price. At $60.99 or more, it's the most expensive way to learn something Freestream and a $19.99 month would have told you.
Watch out for fake "free trial" pages
Search for "Sling TV free trial" and at least one result is a bare page on a free hosting service promising a "no-risk trial", with buttons that lead somewhere other than sling.com. Don't enter a card or Sling login on any page whose address isn't sling.com or an official app store. The same goes for "free Sling accounts", shared logins and "lifetime" codes sold on marketplaces: they're either scams or resold accounts that get shut off.
The same caution applies to the old Day Pass. Sling ended passes in early October 2026, so any site still selling a "Sling day code" isn't selling a real Sling product. What happened to the passes, and the cheapest legal replacements, is covered in our Sling Day Pass article.
Live TV services that do have trials
If what you really want is a free week of live TV, the other services are a better bet than Sling. Trial lengths as listed by trackers in August 2026:
| Service | Typical trial | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | 7 days | Sometimes longer for new accounts during promotions |
| Philo | 7 days | Entertainment channels only, no sports |
| Frndly TV | 7 days | Family and classic channels |
| Fubo | Up to 5 days (varies) | Sports-heavy; length changes by season |
| DirecTV Stream | 5 days | Card required |
| Hulu + Live TV | 3 days | Shortest of the majors |
Trial terms change often and are usually limited to new subscribers. Our roundup of live TV services that offer a free trial keeps the current list, and the Fubo free trial guide covers its exact terms and how to avoid the first charge.
Quick answers
Does Sling TV have a free trial?
No. Sling doesn't offer a free trial in 2026. Its free option is Sling Freestream, and new customers can often get a discounted first month on paid plans.
What is the cheapest way to try Sling TV?
Use Sling Freestream first, which is free, then pay $19.99 for one month of Sling Essentials or Sling Select and cancel straight away if you don't want to continue.
Can I still get a Sling Day Pass instead of a trial?
No. Sling discontinued its day, 3-day and 7-day passes in early October 2026.
Does Sling offer 50% off the first month?
Often, on Orange, Blue or Orange & Blue, but the offer comes and goes and the terms depend on the plan. Check sling.com at sign-up.
If I cancel Sling on the first day, do I lose access?
No. Service continues until the end of the billing period you've paid for. Sling doesn't refund partial months.
Can I cancel Sling in the TV app?
Not if you pay Sling directly; that has to be done on sling.com in a web browser. If you paid through Apple, Google, Amazon or Roku, cancel in that store's subscription settings.
Is Sling Freestream really free?
Yes. It's ad-supported and needs no credit card, but it doesn't include the paid channels such as ESPN, TNT, CNN, FOX or NBC.
Sling's introductory offers change frequently and may differ by plan and ZIP code, and other services' trial lengths shift with the sports calendar. Menu paths for cancelling can move when stores update their apps. Checked October 2026.
