Live TV on a Samsung Smart TV Without Extra Boxes

Short answer: a Samsung smart TV can already show thousands of live channels without any extra box: Samsung TV Plus is built in and free, the built-in tuner handles aerial channels, and the Tizen app store carries the major broadcaster and live-TV streaming apps. The catch is that Samsung TVs can't install apps from outside that store, so the realistic plan is to build around what the store offers in your country, not around a specific third-party app.

Four layers of live TV on a Samsung

People looking for "IPTV on a Samsung" are often hunting for a single app to do everything. On a Samsung, it's more useful to think in layers, most of which are already on the television.

Layer Cost What it covers
Built-in aerial tuner Free (licence fee where applicable) National and local broadcast channels
Samsung TV Plus Free, with ads News, films, themed and niche channels
Broadcaster apps Mostly free Live streams and catch-up
Paid live-TV services Monthly subscription Pay-TV channels and live sport

Our IPTV on Samsung Smart TV article explains the platform side: Tizen, the app store and how player apps are licensed. This one is about what you can actually watch, and how to fit it together.

Samsung TV Plus: what you get free

Samsung TV Plus is Samsung's own free, ad-supported streaming service, and it's the most underused feature on most Samsung televisions.

Scale. Samsung says it offers more than 4,300 channels globally across 30 countries, and passed 100 million monthly active users at the start of 2026. The line-up in any one country is much smaller than the global total, typically a few hundred channels.

What's on it. News channels, film channels, classic series running back to back, cooking, travel, children's programming and some sport-adjacent channels such as highlights and magazine shows. Line-ups vary a lot between countries.

What isn't. Live coverage of major sports competitions and the big premium pay-TV channels. Those rights are too valuable for free, ad-supported services.

How to use it. It appears as an app on the home screen and, on most models, in the channel list alongside aerial channels. No account or sign-up is needed. You can mark favourites and hide categories you never watch.

The built-in tuner is still the best free option

Every Samsung smart TV sold as a television, rather than a monitor, has a built-in digital tuner. With an aerial, it gives you the main national broadcast channels in full quality with no subscription, and in many countries in HD.

Tune it. Settings → Broadcasting → Auto Program (menu names vary slightly by year). Choose Air or Aerial, and let it scan.

It's the most reliable source you'll have. Aerial TV doesn't depend on your internet connection and has near-zero delay, which matters for live sport when neighbours or social media are ahead of your stream.

Hybrid services. In several countries, including the UK (Freeview Play), Germany (HbbTV) and Australia (Freeview Plus), the aerial guide links to catch-up and extra streamed channels. Samsung TVs support these where they're offered.

Satellite models. Many European Samsung TVs also include a satellite tuner, which can receive free-to-air satellite channels with a dish.

Paid live-TV apps on Tizen

Samsung's app store carries the main licensed live-TV services in most markets. Availability is decided country by country, so check the store on your television before subscribing.

In the US, YouTube TV, Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DirecTV and Philo all have Samsung apps. In September 2026, base prices ranged from about $25 a month for Philo to around $83-90 for the full cable-style bundles.

In the UK and Ireland, broadcaster apps such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 are available, alongside pay-TV apps including NOW and sports services.

Elsewhere, national broadcasters and pay-TV operators usually have Samsung apps, and sports services such as DAZN are widely available.

Playlist players. A few player apps in the store accept a playlist or login that you supply. They typically require a paid licence tied to the television. They carry no channels of their own, and what you watch through them should come from a licensed provider.

Apps and services that promise every channel for a small annual fee are almost always unlicensed. They don't appear in Samsung's store for that reason, and paying for them carries real risks: services vanish mid-subscription, payment details get misused, and in several countries viewers as well as sellers have faced legal action.

Why your TV's age matters

Samsung's app store only offers apps that support your television's version of Tizen. On older sets, apps gradually disappear or stop updating.

2024 and later models. Samsung committed in 2024 to seven years of Tizen OS upgrades, starting with its 2024 televisions and extended to some 2023 models. These sets should keep getting current apps well into the 2030s.

Older models. Sets from around 2019 and earlier are the ones most often dropped by app developers. If a service says it's "not available on this device", age is usually why.

The cheap fix. A streaming stick or box plugged into an HDMI port brings a current app store to any television, however old. It's far cheaper than a new TV, and our best IPTV box comparison covers the options.

Putting it all in one guide

Samsung merges some of these layers for you, which makes the television feel more like traditional TV.

The channel list. On most recent models, pressing the channel or guide button shows aerial channels and Samsung TV Plus channels together. You can reorder or hide channels under the channel list's edit option.

Favourites. Build a favourites list that mixes aerial and TV Plus channels. Channel up and down then cycles only through the ones you actually watch.

Paid apps stay separate. Streaming services such as YouTube TV keep their own guides inside their apps. Pin them to the start of the home screen's app row so they're one click away.

Use the Universal Guide carefully. Samsung's Universal Guide shows recommendations across apps, but it isn't a full channel grid. For live TV, the channel list is more useful.

Picture and connection tips

Use Ethernet for streaming apps. Most Samsung TVs have an Ethernet port. For live sport through an app, a cable is much more reliable than Wi-Fi from across the house.

Turn off heavy motion smoothing for sport, or set it to a custom low level. Picture Clarity settings can add artefacts to already-compressed streams.

Check "Auto Motion Plus" and "Game Mode". Game Mode reduces processing delay but can make broadcast pictures look worse. Leave it off for TV.

Update the TV. Settings → Support → Software Update. App problems, especially with streaming services, are often fixed by firmware.

Cold-restart when apps misbehave. Hold the power button on the remote until the Samsung logo appears. That fully restarts the TV rather than putting it in standby.
