You searched for a Plex IPTV plugin. Does one exist? Not in any form that works on current Plex apps. Plex retired its plugin system years ago, and the best-known IPTV plugin, IPTV.bundle, is now an archived GitHub project whose own readme says Plex "has retired plug-ins functionality" and that "most Plex clients and apps do not show any plug-ins at all." What replaced it is a different idea entirely: a separate program that pretends to be a TV tuner.
Short answer: skip the plugin. Run Threadfin or Dispatcharr alongside Plex, and add it in Live TV & DVR as if it were an HDHomeRun. The catch is that this route only gives you live channels and recordings. The plugin's old tricks, like browsing a playlist as folders, aren't coming back.

What the plugin actually did
IPTV.bundle, maintained on GitHub by Cigaras, was a Plex Media Server plugin that read an M3U playlist and showed it inside Plex as a browsable channel. You dropped the bundle into the server's Plug-ins folder, edited a playlist.m3u file inside it, restarted, and an "IPTV" entry appeared in your Plex apps. It supported categories, custom logos and a basic programme guide. Similar bundles existed for specific operators, such as FreeboxTV.bundle in France.
It was popular because it was simple. No tuner, no guide mapping, no Docker. The project gathered around a thousand stars. A widely copied GitHub gist still describes the five-step install. But it relied on a framework Plex no longer supports, which is the whole problem.
How plugins went away
Plex didn't flip a single switch. It wound the system down over a couple of years:
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2018 | Plex announced it was ending support for plugins and the plugin directory as part of streamlining the product |
| 2018 to 2019 | Newer Plex apps stopped showing plugin content; the in-app plugin store disappeared |
| 2020 | On the Plex forum, a long-time contributor summed it up: "Plugins are largely history. No plugin which is supposed to give you 'media content' is working in current versions." |
| 2020s | IPTV.bundle archived; its author points users to Kodi and Emby |
| 2024 to 2026 | Comments on the old install gist report it failing on Android TV, Xbox and other current apps |
Some people report the bundle still loads on certain server versions if you install it by hand. That's not the same as working. If the app on your TV doesn't render plugin content, the server can load the plugin all day and you'll never see a channel.
Why 2026 "install the plugin" guides are wrong
Search results this year still include setup guides with headings like "install the Plex IPTV plugin using the Unsupported AppStore method", one of which also claims Plex removed plugin support "back in 2024". Both are off. The removal began in 2018, and the Unsupported AppStore was itself a plugin, so it suffers the same fate.
A few other signs that a Plex IPTV guide is out of date:
- It quotes Plex Pass at $4.99 a month. The price has been $6.99 since April 2025.
- It tells you to look for a "Channels" or "Plugins" section in Plex Web.
- It names Telly or xTeVe as the current tool without caveats. Telly's repository was archived in June 2026, and community threads describe xTeVe as unmaintained.
- It mixes setup with a provider's own channel list or sales link. Many Plex IPTV "guides" are written by unlicensed resellers.
What replaced it, compared
The modern approach uses Plex's Live TV & DVR feature, which was designed for real tuners. A bridge program reads your playlist and answers Plex exactly as an HDHomeRun would. Plex then builds a full guide and can record.
| Tool | Setup effort | Strengths | Weak spots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threadfin | Moderate | Free, filtering and mapping editor, Docker or plain binaries, port 34400 | Release cadence has slowed; last tagged release we saw was Sept 2024 |
| Dispatcharr | Moderate | Free, active, handles several sources and Xtream logins, auto EPG matching, port 9191 | Newer, more moving parts |
| Channels DVR | Low if you already use it | Polished, can present its sources to Plex | Paid subscription; you're running two DVRs |
| Tvheadend + tvhProxy | High | Mixes real broadcast tuners and IPTV | Steeper learning curve |
| xTeVe | Moderate | Still widely documented | Effectively unmaintained |
For a first setup, Threadfin is the most documented. We go step by step in adding IPTV to Plex with Threadfin in Docker, or without Docker on Windows, Mac or a NAS. The background on how these pieces fit is in our Plex Live TV & DVR explainer.
What you lose compared with the plugin
The tuner route is more capable in some ways and narrower in others. Be clear about the trade before you start.
| Feature | Old plugin | Tuner bridge today |
|---|---|---|
| Live channels | Yes | Yes |
| Grid programme guide | Basic | Full Plex guide from XMLTV |
| Recording | No | Yes, with Plex Pass |
| Folder-style browsing by group | Yes | No; Plex has no channel groups |
| Film and series (VOD) entries | Sometimes | No |
| Works on current apps | No | Most, with some Android TV and Fire TV quirks |
| Watching away from home | n/a | Needs Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass |
The missing VOD is the one people notice. A tuner has channels, not libraries. If your source's on-demand section matters, you'll need a player app for that part.
Moving an old plugin setup across
If you still have an IPTV.bundle folder on an old server, it isn't wasted. The useful part is the playlist inside it.
-
Find the playlist. In the bundle, look under
Contents/Resourcesforplaylist.m3u(or whatever name you set in the plugin's preferences). That's a normal M3U file. - Check the links still work. Plugin-era playlists often date from 2017 to 2019, and many stream URLs will be dead. Open the file in VLC and try a handful before going further.
- Host it where the bridge can read it. Threadfin accepts a local file path as well as a URL, so you can point it straight at the file.
- Add a guide. The plugin could fetch an XMLTV file named in its settings. Reuse that link in the bridge if it still works, then match channel IDs in the mapping screen.
- Remove the old bundle from the server's Plug-ins folder once you're done. Unmaintained plugin code has no business sitting on a server that's reachable from the internet.
Expect the guide matching to take longer than the plugin ever did. That's the cost of a proper grid guide, and it's a one-off job.
If you want the plugin experience back
The plugin's appeal was "open the app, see the playlist". You can still have that, just not in Plex:
- Kodi with IPTV Simple Client reads an M3U and XMLTV directly, with groups, and was the plugin author's own suggestion. See our Kodi setup guide.
- Jellyfin or Emby accept M3U and XMLTV in their own Live TV settings, no bridge needed. If you're open to a second server, this is the cleanest route.
- A dedicated player app on your TV handles groups, catch-up and fast zapping better than any server. Our player app guide sorts them by device.
Whichever route you choose, the playlist still needs to come from a source you're entitled to watch. Running an old plugin or a new bridge doesn't change that, and our page on licensed IPTV providers explains how to check.
Quick answers
Is there still an IPTV plugin for Plex?
No working one. Plex retired its plugin system starting in 2018, and the best-known IPTV plugin, IPTV.bundle, is archived. Current Plex apps do not display plugin content.
What replaced the Plex IPTV plugin?
Tuner-emulation bridges such as Threadfin and Dispatcharr. They present an IPTV playlist to Plex as an HDHomeRun tuner, so it appears in Live TV & DVR with a full guide.
Does the Unsupported AppStore still work?
No. It was itself a Plex plugin, so it stopped being useful when Plex apps dropped plugin support.
Can I still install IPTV.bundle manually?
Some users report the server still loads it, but current Plex apps do not show plugin content, so in practice you will not be able to watch through it.
Is Telly still an option?
Telly's GitHub repository was archived in June 2026, so it receives no further fixes. Threadfin or Dispatcharr are better starting points.
Do I need Plex Pass for the replacement method?
Not to watch live channels at home. Recording requires Plex Pass, which has cost $6.99 a month, $69.99 a year or $249.99 lifetime since April 2025.
What is the simplest alternative to Plex for IPTV?
Jellyfin and Emby accept M3U and XMLTV directly in their Live TV settings, and Kodi's IPTV Simple Client reads a playlist without any server.
Project status for open-source bridges changes as maintainers come and go, so check each repository's recent activity before installing. Plex pricing is the US list price at the time of checking. Checked October 2026.
