La Liga in the USA: What ESPN Select Gets You

Short answer: in the US, every La Liga match streams on ESPN Select, the plan formerly called ESPN+, at about $14 a month. You don't need the pricier ESPN Unlimited, and the same subscription gives you both English and Spanish commentary. The catch is timing: matches kick off as early as 8 a.m. Eastern at weekends, and only a handful reach ESPN's cable channels, so for most games there is no free or antenna option at all.

Who has the US rights

ESPN holds exclusive US rights to La Liga in both English and Spanish, on an eight-year deal that began in 2021 and runs to the end of the 2028-29 season. It was ESPN's first big streaming-led soccer deal, and La Liga has been the backbone of ESPN+ ever since.

For fans, that means one company and, in practice, one subscription. Unlike the Premier League, split between NBC and Peacock, or the Champions League on Paramount+, there is no second service to add for particular games.

Coverage in other countries is quite different; our main La Liga viewing guide covers the UK and elsewhere, including Spain's match-day blocking controversy.

Which ESPN plan you need

In 2025 ESPN reorganised its streaming into two plans, and many fans assumed La Liga had moved to the more expensive one. It hasn't.

Plan Price (from Sept 2026) La Liga
ESPN Select (formerly ESPN+) About $14/month or $140/year Every match, English and Spanish
ESPN Unlimited About $32/month or $320/year Every match, plus ESPN's cable channels
Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Select bundle About $22/month with ads Every match, plus the entertainment apps

Select is enough. Unlimited only adds the handful of games shown on ESPN's cable channels, which are also on Select as streams in most cases, plus ESPN's other sports.

Check the bundle. If your household already pays for Disney+ or Hulu, the bundle with ESPN Select may cost only a few dollars more than what you pay now.

Annual beats monthly for a full season. La Liga runs from mid-August to late May, so the annual plan works out cheaper than ten monthly payments.

English or Spanish commentary

Because ESPN holds both languages, you choose the commentary rather than the service. In the ESPN app, most matches are listed with separate English and Spanish feeds, and on the biggest games ESPN Deportes produces its own broadcast.

This is a real advantage for Spanish-speaking households, who elsewhere often need a second subscription for Spanish-language rights. Here, one login covers both, on the same devices, at the same price.

Kick-off times in US time zones

La Liga spreads its matches across the weekend and occasionally midweek, and Spanish evening kick-offs land in the US morning and afternoon.

Slot Eastern Pacific
Early About 8 a.m. About 5 a.m.
Late morning About 10:15 a.m. About 7:15 a.m.
Midday About 12:30 p.m. About 9:30 a.m.
Evening in Spain About 3 p.m. About noon

Times shift by an hour for a few weeks each spring and autumn, when Europe and the US change their clocks on different dates. The exact slot for each match is confirmed only a couple of weeks ahead, which is typical of European leagues.

West Coast fans have it hardest: the early game starts before dawn. Full replays in the ESPN app, available shortly after the final whistle, are how many people watch.

The games on cable TV

A small number of the biggest matches, including El Clásico, are also shown on ESPN, ESPN2 or, occasionally, ABC in English, and on ESPN Deportes in Spanish.

If you have cable or a live TV streaming service with ESPN, those games come with it. Any ABC broadcast is free with an antenna, but ABC matches are rare, so an antenna isn't a realistic way to follow the league.

The first El Clásico of 2026-27, Barcelona against Real Madrid, is scheduled for Sunday 25 October, with the exact kick-off time still to be confirmed at the time of writing.

Setting up ESPN on your TV

The ESPN app runs on Roku, Fire TV, Google TV, Apple TV, most smart TVs, games consoles, phones and web browsers.

Follow your club. Adding your team in the app surfaces its matches on the home screen and in notifications, which is much quicker than scrolling a busy Saturday's live list.

Pick the feed before kick-off. English and Spanish broadcasts are usually listed as separate events. Choose the one you want from the match page.

Mind spoilers. If you're watching a replay, avoid the app's scores tab and turn off score alerts from other apps.

Watch several devices. An ESPN account allows streaming on more than one device at a time, within limits ESPN sets, so a match in the living room and another on a tablet is usually fine. Our guide to multiple connections explains how these limits generally work.

Cups and other Spanish soccer

ESPN has also streamed matches from Spain's second division, known as LaLiga Hypermotion, on the same service. That's useful for fans of clubs that have been relegated or are pushing for promotion, though the selection of second-tier games can vary.

The Copa del Rey and the Supercopa are sold separately from the league by the Spanish federation, and their US rights have moved between broadcasters over the years. Check listings for the current season rather than assuming they're on ESPN.

Spanish clubs in the Champions League and Europa League are on Paramount+, not ESPN. See our guide to the Champions League in the USA.

Travelling, and visitors to the US

ESPN's rights are for the US only. A US ESPN Select account taken abroad generally won't show live La Liga, because another broadcaster holds the rights in almost every other country.

In Canada, the rights are sold separately from the US package, so check Canadian listings. In the UK and Ireland, Premier Sports and Disney+ share it. In Mexico and much of Latin America, the rights sit with other regional sports networks and streamers. The local broadcaster is the licensed option wherever you are.

Visitors to the US face the reverse problem: their home subscription may not play here, and ESPN Select is the licensed way to watch during the stay. A monthly plan, cancelled before renewal, suits a short visit.

Using tools to appear to be in another country usually breaks the service's terms and can get an account restricted, so it isn't a dependable workaround.

Is it worth it?

For a La Liga fan, ESPN Select is one of the better deals in US sports streaming: every match of a top European league, in two languages, for about $14 a month, with a large archive of other sport included.

It also compares well with other leagues: following the Premier League in the US typically means Peacock plus cable channels, and following Serie A means Paramount+. La Liga fans need only one relatively cheap subscription for the whole season.

The trade-offs are the early kick-offs and the lack of any free option. There is no legitimate way to watch most matches without the subscription.

That gap is where unlicensed "every channel" IPTV packages advertise. They aren't licensed to show La Liga in the US, they fail without warning, and they leave you with no recourse, all for a saving of a few dollars against a service that already carries every game. Our guide to what's legal with IPTV in the US explains the distinction.
