Short answer: YouTube TV is IPTV: it delivers live TV over the internet, with licences for every channel it carries. When people compare "IPTV vs YouTube TV" they usually mean YouTube TV against a cheap third-party subscription offering thousands of channels. Those are almost always unlicensed, which is why they can charge a fraction of YouTube TV's $82.99. The better question is whether a cheaper licensed route fits you, and in 2026 there are several, including YouTube TV's own new genre plans from $54.99.
At a glance
IPTV vs YouTube TV
| YouTube TV Base | $82.99/month, 100+ channels |
| YouTube TV genre plans | From $54.99 (launched February 2026) |
| DVR | Unlimited, kept nine months |
| Cheap IPTV lists | Usually unlicensed, no guarantees |
| Licensed cheaper routes | Genre plans, Sling, ESPN or Fox One apps |
| Out-of-market NFL | Sunday Ticket, from $240 for new subscribers |
YouTube TV is IPTV, just licensed
IPTV simply means television delivered over internet protocol. By that definition YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling and Fubo are all IPTV services. What sets them apart from the "IPTV subscriptions" advertised on social media and forums is not the technology, but that they pay for the channels they carry.
That payment is most of the price. Carriage fees for ESPN, local network affiliates and regional sports networks are the reason YouTube TV costs what it does, and why it has climbed from $35 in 2017 to $82.99 today.
A service offering the same channels, and many more, for $10 or $15 a month is not operating more efficiently. It is not paying the rights holders at all.
Side by side
| YouTube TV | Typical unlicensed IPTV list | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $54.99-82.99 | $10-20 |
| Channel rights | Licensed | None |
| Local channels | Your local ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox | Random feeds, often other cities |
| DVR | Unlimited, nine months | Rare or unreliable |
| Streams | 3 (unlimited at home with 4K Plus) | Varies, often 1 |
| Support and refunds | Google account, standard consumer protection | Typically none |
| Works on | Apps in every major store | Often sideloaded apps |
| Risk of sudden shutdown | Very low | High |
The price gap is real. So is everything else in the table.
What YouTube TV gives you in 2026
The Base plan ($82.99) includes over 100 channels: the four local networks where available, ESPN networks, Fox Sports, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, HGTV, AMC, Disney Channel and many regional sports networks.
Genre plans arrived in February 2026. The Sports plan ($64.99) has around 40 channels including locals, ESPN, NFL Network and conference networks. The Entertainment plan ($54.99) has lifestyle, news and kids' channels with locals but no sports channels. Further tiers mix these.
Unlimited cloud DVR is included on all plans, with recordings kept for nine months.
Add-ons include 4K Plus ($9.99, 4K on supported content and unlimited home streams), Sports Plus with NFL RedZone, and premium channels. NFL Sunday Ticket is sold separately, at $378 a season for returning YouTube TV subscribers and from $240 for new ones in 2026.
Promotions matter: YouTube TV regularly offers new subscribers several months at a reduced rate, such as $67.99 on the Base plan earlier in 2026.
What you risk with an unlicensed service
Disappearing mid-season. Unlicensed services are shut down by rights holders and law enforcement, or simply stop responding. Annual payments go with them.
Blocked apps. Amazon now blocks Fire TV apps it identifies as offering unlicensed content, both at installation and launch, and other platforms act against such apps too.
Payment and security. Many sellers take crypto, gift cards or payment through intermediaries, and sideloaded apps from unknown sources can carry malware.
Legal exposure. In the US, enforcement has focused on operators and resellers. Viewers are rarely pursued, but it is not zero-risk, and in some other countries users have been fined. Our guide to IPTV legality in the US covers the detail.
Legitimate IPTV that is not YouTube TV
Not every alternative to YouTube TV is dodgy. Legitimate options include:
Other licensed live-TV services, such as Sling, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV and DirecTV Stream.
Free ad-supported TV (FAST) services like Pluto TV, Tubi, Roku Channel and Samsung TV Plus, with hundreds of licensed channels at no cost.
Direct network apps such as ESPN Unlimited ($31.99) and Fox One ($19.99).
Player apps that play a playlist or login a licensed provider gives you, including some international and ethnic-language TV services and your own antenna tuner.
Licensed ways to pay less than YouTube TV Base
| Option | Monthly | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV Entertainment | $54.99 | No sports channels |
| YouTube TV Sports | $64.99 | No news or lifestyle |
| Sling Orange or Blue | $45.99 | Few local channels; add an antenna |
| ESPN Unlimited + Fox One | $39.99 | Two apps, no CBS or NBC; add an antenna |
| Antenna + FAST apps | $0 | No cable networks |

Picture quality, reliability and experience
Reliability. YouTube TV runs on Google's content delivery network, the same infrastructure that serves YouTube. During huge events such as the Super Bowl it generally holds up, and outages are rare and short. Unlicensed services often run on rented servers that buckle under exactly those peak moments, which is when viewers most want them.
Picture. Most YouTube TV channels stream in 720p or 1080p, with 4K on selected sport and shows through 4K Plus. Unlicensed streams are usually re-encoded copies of someone else's feed, with lower quality and more delay.
The guide and search. YouTube TV has a full programme guide, recommendations, multiview for sport and profiles for up to six household members. Unlicensed lists tend to be a long, unsorted list of channel names.
Location checks. YouTube TV sets a home area and checks it periodically, which determines your local channels. That is part of how its licences work.
How to try YouTube TV without overpaying
Use the introductory offer. New subscribers are usually offered a free trial or a reduced price for the first few months. Check the current offer on YouTube TV's site.
Start with a genre plan. If you only watch sport, or never watch it, a genre plan saves $18 to $28 a month against Base.
Pause instead of cancelling. YouTube TV lets you pause membership for a period, which suits seasonal viewers.
Watch for price rises. YouTube TV has raised prices five times since launch. Existing subscribers get notice before a change, which is a natural moment to reassess.
Who YouTube TV suits
YouTube TV is the right choice if you want one app with local channels, most cable networks, regional sport and a DVR that never runs out of space, and are happy to pay for it.
It is overkill if you mainly want local channels (use an antenna), one or two sports networks (use the direct apps), or mostly on-demand shows (stick with Netflix, Disney+ and similar).
What it is not in competition with is an unlicensed list. Those are cheaper for the same reason a counterfeit is cheaper, and they come with the same absence of guarantees.
Quick answers
Is YouTube TV an IPTV service? Yes. YouTube TV delivers live TV over the internet, which makes it IPTV. Unlike cheap third-party IPTV lists, it holds licences for the channels it carries.
Why is YouTube TV so much more expensive than IPTV subscriptions? Most of YouTube TV's price goes on carriage fees for the channels it carries. Very cheap IPTV subscriptions generally do not pay rights holders, which is why they can charge a fraction of the price.
How much is YouTube TV in 2026? The Base plan costs $82.99 a month. Genre plans launched in February 2026 start at $54.99 for Entertainment and $64.99 for Sports.
Is using a cheap IPTV service illegal? Services that stream channels without licences infringe copyright. In the US, enforcement usually targets operators, but viewers face practical risks such as lost payments, blocked apps and malware.
Does YouTube TV have local channels? Yes. YouTube TV carries local ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox stations in almost all US markets, along with PBS in many areas.
What is the cheapest legal alternative to YouTube TV? An antenna with free ad-supported apps costs nothing monthly. For paid live TV, Sling Orange or Blue at $45.99 and the ESPN Unlimited and Fox One bundle at $39.99 are cheaper than YouTube TV Base.
Can I use YouTube TV outside the US? No. YouTube TV is available only in the United States and checks your location.
