Short answer: a Vizio TV can play live TV through apps in the Vizio OS app catalogue, its built-in WatchFree+ service and casting via Chromecast or AirPlay, but it can't install apps from anywhere else, so most general IPTV player apps simply aren't available. The non-obvious catch is ownership: Walmart bought Vizio in December 2024, and since March 2026 some new Vizio TVs need a Walmart account before smart features work at all.

What Vizio OS is, and what it isn't
Vizio TVs run Vizio's own operating system, now called Vizio OS and previously known as SmartCast. It's not Android, not Google TV and not Roku, even though Vizio TVs can cast from Google and Apple devices.
Apps come only from Vizio. The home screen's app row draws from a catalogue that Vizio curates, which it says runs to more than 300 apps. There's no way for an ordinary owner to install an app from a file or a website, and there's no developer route aimed at the public.
That rules out most IPTV players. The general-purpose playlist players that are common on Android TV and Fire TV aren't generally in Vizio's catalogue. If you have an M3U playlist or Xtream-style login from a licensed provider, a Vizio TV is usually not the device to play it on directly.
Vizio OS also runs on some onn TVs. Walmart's own onn brand now includes models powered by Vizio OS, and everything here applies to those too.
The Walmart factor
Walmart completed its purchase of Vizio in December 2024, and the brand has since become effectively a Walmart house brand, sold through Walmart and Sam's Club.
Account requirements. Vizio has required an account for some smart features since 2024. In March 2026, Walmart confirmed that select new Vizio OS TVs require a Walmart account to complete setup and use smart features. It didn't list which models. Existing Vizio account holders can link their account to Walmart credentials.
What still works without one. The HDMI inputs and any aerial tuner work regardless, so a streaming stick or cable box plugged into the TV is unaffected.
Why it matters for live TV. WatchFree+ also needs an account, so on the affected sets, the built-in free channels and the app catalogue both sit behind a Walmart sign-in. If that's not something you want, a separate streaming device avoids it entirely.
Your four routes to live TV
| Route | Cost | Account needed | Playlist players? |
|---|---|---|---|
| WatchFree+ | Free, with ads | Yes | No |
| Vizio catalogue apps | Per service | Vizio/Walmart plus service | Rarely |
| Casting (Chromecast/AirPlay) | Per service | Service only | If the phone app casts |
| Streaming stick on HDMI | Device cost | Stick's own account | Yes, on Android-based sticks |
WatchFree+ and the free channels
WatchFree+ is Vizio's built-in free streaming service, and for many households it covers casual live viewing without any subscription.
What you get. Vizio lists more than 300 live channels plus a library of over 30,000 on-demand films and episodes. Expect news, film channels, classic series, cooking, children's programming and sport-related shows.
How to find it. It sits on the home screen and, on most models, is reached with the channel buttons or its own input. The grid guide behaves much like cable.
What it doesn't include. Live coverage of major league sport and the premium pay-TV networks. Those rights aren't available to free services.
Other free apps. Other free ad-supported services, such as Pluto TV and Tubi, are typically in Vizio's catalogue too, which widens the free choice considerably.
Aerial channels. Many Vizio TVs have a built-in tuner, but not every model has. Check the specifications before relying on an aerial; a set without one needs an external tuner or a streaming service for local channels.
Licensed live-TV apps on Vizio
The major US live-TV streaming services are available on Vizio OS. As of September 2026, base prices ran as follows; all change regularly and add-ons cost extra.
| Service | Base price (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Philo | $25/month |
| Sling TV (Orange or Blue) | $45.99/month |
| YouTube TV | $82.99/month |
| Fubo (Pro) | $88.99/month |
| Hulu + Live TV / DirecTV | $89.99/month |
Check the specific app. Vizio's catalogue changes, and some services support only newer models. Search the app row on your television before signing up.
Sport. Network apps, league apps and services such as Peacock and Paramount+ are generally available. Our NFL viewing guide sets out which services carry which games, including blackout rules.
Services offering thousands of channels for a small yearly fee won't be in Vizio's catalogue, because they don't hold the rights to what they sell. They also tend to disappear without refunds.
Casting from a phone or tablet
Vizio's most useful trick for IPTV is that the television accepts casts from both ecosystems.
Chromecast built-in. Most Vizio smart TVs since 2016 act as a Chromecast target. Any Android or iPhone app with a cast button can send its stream to the TV.
AirPlay. Recent Vizio TVs also accept AirPlay from iPhones, iPads and Macs.
What this means for playlists. If a licensed provider's player app on your phone supports casting, you can watch on the Vizio without any app on the TV. The phone acts as the remote; the television fetches the stream itself, so the phone's battery isn't the limit.
Limits. Not every player app supports casting, some streams can't be cast for rights reasons, and switching channels is slower than on a native app. For occasional viewing it's fine; for daily use, a stick is better. Our IPTV on Chromecast guide covers casting in more depth.
When a streaming stick is the better answer
For anyone who relies on an IPTV player app, the practical answer on a Vizio is a separate device on an HDMI port.
It opens up the full app choice. Google TV devices and Android-based Fire TV sticks run the playlist players that Vizio OS lacks. Apple TV and Roku offer store-based players too.
It avoids the account question. The stick signs in with its own account; the Vizio simply acts as a display.
It's often faster. Entry-level televisions have modest processors. A current stick usually loads guides and switches channels more quickly.
