Short answer: most TCL televisions sold today run Google TV, which makes them one of the easier routes to IPTV: the full Play Store, room for licensed live-TV apps and players, and the ability to install apps from outside the store. The catch is that TCL also sells Roku TV and Fire TV models, and on those the rules are completely different, so the first job is checking which system yours runs.

Which TCL do you have?
For years, a TCL television in the US meant a Roku TV. TCL began adopting Google TV in 2021, launched Fire TV models in the US in 2023, and in Europe and Australia has long used Android TV and then Google TV. Today, Google TV is the system on most of its range, including the popular QM-series mini-LED models.
The quick check. Roku TV models have "Roku TV" on the remote and the familiar purple tile home screen. Fire TV models have Amazon's branding and Alexa button. Google TV models show Google TV's "For you" home screen and usually a Google Assistant button.
The certain check. Settings → System → About names the operating system and software version.
Older TCL Android TV sets, from before Google TV, behave similarly to Google TV for IPTV, though with older software and fewer updates.

Setting up IPTV on a TCL Google TV
1. Update the television. Settings → System → About → System update. TCL pushed a significant update in May 2026 to 2023-2025 models with its Pentonic 700 chip, including the QM6K, QM7K and QM8K, adding Dolby Vision Filmmaker mode and fixing Disney+ audio. Current firmware also avoids a lot of app crashes.
2. Start with Google Play. Licensed live-TV services, broadcaster apps and many player apps that accept a playlist or login from your provider are there. Installing from your phone's Play Store app and choosing the TV as the target is quicker than typing on the television.
3. Only if you need it, allow one outside app. Settings → System → About, click the build number seven times to unlock developer options. Then under Apps → Security & restrictions, allow unknown sources for a single installer app. Download the player only from its developer's official site and turn the permission off afterwards.
4. Add your playlist or login from your licensed provider, and give the guide time to load fully the first time.
5. Keep an eye on updates. Apps installed outside Play don't update themselves.
A coming change. Google is introducing developer verification for apps installed on certified Android devices from outside Play. It began in four countries in September 2026, with a global rollout planned from 2027. Apps from registered developers will keep installing; anonymous ones won't. Our IPTV on Android TV guide has more on this.
Storage: the TCL-specific problem
TCL's budget and mid-range Google TVs are good value partly because they ship with modest storage, often around 8 GB on entry models, of which the system itself takes a large share. Live-TV apps with large programme guides use a lot of space for their caches.
Symptoms. Apps that fail to update, a guide that has to reload every time, "storage full" warnings or a home screen that becomes sluggish.
Fixes. Settings → Apps shows how much each app uses. Uninstall apps you don't watch, including preinstalled ones where possible, and clear the cache (not the data) on your live-TV app. Clearing data wipes your playlist and login.
USB storage. Some TCL models let you format a USB drive as extra storage. Performance depends on the drive; use a fast USB 3 flash drive rather than an old one.
Or add a stick. If you rely on a demanding live-TV app, a dedicated streaming device with more storage often works better than the television's built-in system. See our best IPTV box comparison.
Free live TV on TCL
TCLtv+. TCL's own free, ad-supported service offers several hundred channels in the US, spanning news, film, series, children's programming and sport-related shows. It needs no subscription.
The Google TV Live tab. Google TV adds its own free channels, with TCL citing more than 800 for US users, alongside partners such as Pluto TV. You can browse them in a single guide.
The aerial tuner. Every TCL television has one, and it still gives you the main broadcast channels free, in high quality and with no internet delay. On Google TV models, aerial channels appear in the Live tab's guide too.
None of these free services carry the major live sport rights or premium pay-TV channels. For those, the licensed options are pay-TV operators' apps and live-TV streaming services. As of September 2026, US bundles ranged from about $25 a month for Philo to roughly $83-90 for YouTube TV, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV and DirecTV.
TCL Roku TV and Fire TV models
Roku TV. TCL Roku TVs work exactly like Roku's own players. Only Roku Store apps can be installed, playlist players are limited and support fewer stream formats, and The Roku Channel supplies a large free live-TV line-up. Our IPTV on Roku guide explains the details.
Fire TV. TCL's Fire TV models run Amazon's Fire TV software with the Amazon Appstore. They can install apps from outside the store, but Amazon blocks apps it identifies as giving access to unlicensed content, both when installing and when opening them, with no exceptions. Our Firestick guide covers how that works.
Picture settings for live channels
Frame-rate matching. On Google TV models, Settings → Display & Sound → Advanced display settings. Turning on content frame-rate matching removes the judder of 50 fps broadcasts on a 60 Hz output. Your player app must support it too.
Motion settings. TCL's motion smoothing can add artefacts to compressed streams. For live sport, try a low or custom setting rather than the strongest.
Picture mode. "Standard" or "Movie" usually looks more natural on broadcast channels than "Vivid", which exaggerates the blockiness of low-bit-rate streams.
Wired connection. Most TCL TVs have an Ethernet port. For live streams it's more reliable than Wi-Fi, especially in a busy home.
Quick answers
Can I watch IPTV on a TCL TV? Yes. On Google TV models, you can use Play Store apps and install players from outside it. Roku TV and Fire TV models have their own rules.
How do I know which system my TCL runs? Check Settings → System → About, or the branding on the remote and home screen.
Can I sideload apps on a TCL Google TV? Yes, by enabling developer options and allowing unknown sources for one installer app. Google's developer verification will restrict apps from unregistered developers from 2026-27.
Why do apps keep failing to update on my TCL? Usually storage. Remove unused apps and clear caches, or add USB storage where supported.
Does TCL have free live TV? Yes. TCLtv+ and Google TV's Live tab provide free ad-supported channels, and the built-in tuner receives aerial channels.

Which TCL is best for IPTV? A Google TV model with plenty of storage, such as the mid-range and upper QM series.
TCL's operating system choice varies by model, year and country, and firmware, free channel line-ups, service prices and Google's developer verification rollout change over time. Prices shown are US base plans. Checked September 2026.
