Short answer: a Sony Bravia is one of the easiest televisions for IPTV, because every current model runs Google TV with the full Google Play Store: licensed live-TV apps and general player apps for a playlist you supply install directly. The catches are practical. Built-in storage is modest, so a big guide and several apps can slow things down, and older Sony sets on Android TV get fewer updates. Longer term, Sony's TV business moves into a joint venture majority-owned by TCL, expected to start operating in April 2027.

Which Sony TV do you have?
Sony moved from Android TV to Google TV in 2021, and every Bravia since runs Google TV. Both use the Google Play Store, so app availability is essentially the same; Google TV adds a different home screen with recommendations.
Sony TV software by generation
| Years | System | What it means for IPTV |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 (Bravia 2 II, 3 II, 7 II, 9 II) | Google TV | Current apps, longest remaining updates |
| 2021 to 2025 (Bravia 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, X-series, A-series) | Google TV | Full Play Store; update pace slows over time |
| 2015 to 2020 | Android TV | Play Store still works, but some apps drop older Android versions |
| Before 2015 | Sony's own platform | Very limited app support; add a streaming device |
To check, open Settings → System → About, which shows the model and Android TV OS version. The model number on the back label tells you the year.
Installing a player or service app
Licensed services are a Play Store search away. Sign in and you get the service's channels, guide and recordings.
General player apps that play an M3U playlist or Xtream-style login from your provider are also in Google Play for TVs. Search by name from the Apps tab or by voice; our best IPTV player apps guide compares them.
Installing apps from outside Play is possible on Google TV through Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources, but it's rarely needed, sideloaded apps don't update themselves, and Google's new developer verification rules, starting in four countries on 30 September 2026 and expanding in 2027, make Play apps the safer long-term choice.
Set up from your phone. Many players offer a web page or QR code for entering the playlist from a phone, which is far quicker than the on-screen keyboard.
Storage and memory: the Sony weak spot
Televisions have far less storage and memory than a phone, and Bravias are no exception. A large channel list with a week of guide data, plus several streaming apps, can fill storage and slow the interface.
Check free space in Settings → System → Storage. If it's nearly full, updates can fail and apps become sluggish.
Uninstall unused apps and disable preinstalled ones you never open.
Trim the guide. In your player, load only the channel groups you watch and keep guide data to three days or fewer.
Clear cache, not data. Settings → Apps → [app] → Clear cache is safe. Clear data resets the app and removes your login.
Restart occasionally. Hold the power button on the remote and choose Restart; it clears memory in a way that standby doesn't.
If a Bravia still struggles, a separate streamer on HDMI often gives a snappier experience, because it has its own processor and storage. Our Google TV Streamer guide covers that option.
Picture and sound settings for live TV
Match content frame rate. Live channels in Europe broadcast at 50 Hz and in North America at 60 Hz. Some player apps can switch the TV's output to match; enable it where offered to avoid judder in sport.
Motionflow. Sony's motion processing can make football smoother but gives films a "soap opera" look. The Standard or Custom setting with smoothness low is a sensible middle ground.
Picture mode per input. Sony remembers settings per source. Tune the picture while watching your IPTV app, not an antenna channel.
Sound. If lip sync drifts with a soundbar, check the TV's A/V sync setting before the player's own audio delay option. See our audio sync guide.
Network
Bravias have Ethernet ports on almost every model. For live channels, use it. Wi-Fi works well on newer sets near a router, but the TV's position against a wall is often poor for reception.
Check Settings → Network & Internet for signal strength, and run a speed test from a browser or speed-test app on the TV itself rather than your phone. Aim for around 10 to 15 Mbps per HD stream, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K.
Sony, TCL and what BRAVIA Inc. means
In 2026 Sony and TCL agreed to move Sony's TV and home audio business into a new company, BRAVIA Inc., with TCL holding 51% and Sony 49%. It is expected to begin operating in April 2027, based in Tokyo, and products will keep the Sony and Bravia names.
For owners, this is a behind-the-scenes change. Existing Sony TVs keep running Google TV, and the software and apps come from Google's platform rather than from Sony alone. What to watch in future is how long updates continue for older models under the new company. If you are buying now, the 2026 models have the most runway.
Legal and safe
Google TV gives you access to the same wide app choice as any Android device, including apps you shouldn't use. A player is legal; what matters is whether the service providing the playlist is licensed. Services offering every premium channel and sports league for a few pounds or dollars a month are not, and their apps are removed from Google Play when identified.
Quick answers
Can I watch IPTV on a Sony TV? Yes. Sony Bravia TVs from 2015 onwards run Android TV or Google TV with the Google Play Store, where licensed live-TV apps and general player apps are available.
Does a Sony Bravia have Google Play? Yes. Every Bravia since 2021 runs Google TV, and most from 2015 to 2020 run Android TV. Both include the Google Play Store.
Why is my Sony TV slow with IPTV apps? Usually low storage or memory. Remove unused apps, trim the player's channel groups and guide data, clear app caches and restart the TV occasionally.
Can I sideload apps on a Sony Google TV? It is possible through the Unknown sources setting, but rarely necessary. Play Store apps update automatically and are unaffected by Google's new developer verification rules.
