The question behind most "IPTV set top box" searches isn't really what a set-top box is. It's whether you need one at all, now that every TV has apps and a streaming stick costs less than a month of live TV. The honest way to answer it is to look at how long each option stays useful, and what that works out to per year.
Short answer: if your TV is a 2024 or newer Samsung, or a 2022 or newer LG, its built-in apps are likely to keep getting updates for years and a box adds little. For older or budget TVs, a $50-$60 stick is the cheapest fix. A $100-$150 box earns its price on the main TV, mainly for the Ethernet port and extra memory. The catch: what a device can install now depends on its platform more than its hardware, and 2026 changed that for Fire TV and Android boxes.
At a glance
Box, stick or TV app in 2026
| TV's own apps | $0 extra; good if the TV is recent and still updated |
| Streaming stick | About $50-$60; best for older and second TVs |
| Set-top box | About $100-$150; best for the main TV and sport |
| Longest TV update promises | Samsung 7 years, LG 5 years, Hisense VIDAA up to 8 |
| Rough cost per year | $0 (TV app) to about $20-$30 (stick or box) |
| 2026 change | New Fire TV sticks run Vega OS, Appstore apps only |
The three options side by side
| Smart TV apps | Streaming stick | Set-top box | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical price | Included | About $50-$60 | About $100-$150 (Shield TV Pro about $300) |
| Ethernet | Usually, on the TV | Adapter needed | Built in on most |
| Memory and storage | Often the weakest | Modest | Most headroom |
| Updates come from | The TV maker | The stick's platform | The box's platform |
| Live TV apps | Depends on the TV's system | All the major ones | All the major ones |
| Moves to another TV | No | Yes, easily | Yes |
| Best for | Recent TVs, simple households | Older TVs, bedrooms, travel | Main TV, sport, big channel guides |
All three run the same licensed live TV apps for the most part: YouTube TV, Sling, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo and DirecTV are on every major platform. The differences are in how smoothly they run, how long they keep running, and what else you can install. How long each one stays useful
A streaming device rarely breaks. It becomes useless when apps stop supporting it, usually because the platform has stopped updating it. That makes update promises the hidden spec that matters most, and in the past two years TV makers have started publishing them.
| Platform | Published update commitment | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Tizen TVs | Seven years of Tizen OS updates | TVs launched from 2024, plus some 2023 models |
| LG webOS TVs (Re:New) | Four major upgrades over five years | Models launched from 2022 |
| Hisense VIDAA TVs | "Up to 8 years" of software support | Some VIDAA models launched from 2025 |
| Amazon Fire TV (TVs sold by Amazon) | Security updates to at least 31 Dec 2030, or four years from purchase | Recent Omni, 2-Series and 4-Series lines |
| Google TV, Roku, Apple TV | No comparable fixed multi-year promise that we could find | Apple has a long record of updating older models anyway |
Two caveats. Hisense's figure is a ceiling, not a minimum. And Amazon's promise covers security updates, not new Fire OS versions or continued app support.
The practical reading: a 2024 Samsung or a 2023 LG bought today still has years of supported apps ahead of it, so a separate box is a nice-to-have. A 2019 TV from any brand is past the point where you can rely on its app store, and a stick is the sensible fix.
What each option really costs per year
Spread the purchase price over the years you're likely to use it. These are rough estimates using typical lifespans, not guarantees:
| Option | Price | Realistic useful life | Cost per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recent TV's built-in apps | $0 | Until updates end | $0 |
| Streaming stick (Fire TV Stick 4K, Roku Streaming Stick 4K, onn 4K) | About $40-$60 | 3-4 years | About $12-$20 |
| Mid-range box (Google TV Streamer, onn 4K Pro, Fire TV Cube) | About $50-$150 | 4-5 years | About $12-$30 |
| Apple TV 4K | About $129-$149+ | 5-7 years | About $20-$30 |
| Nvidia Shield TV Pro | About $300 | 5-7 years | About $45-$60 |
Against a live TV bill of $80-$100 a month, every one of these is a rounding error. That changes the question. Don't buy the cheapest device; buy the one that makes the service you're paying $1,000 a year for work best on your main TV. For a ranked list of current boxes, see our best IPTV box for 2026.
Prices move often and some boxes went up in 2026 as memory costs rose, so check the retailer on the day.
When the TV's own apps are enough
Plenty of households never need a box. The TV's built-in apps are fine if all of these are true:
- The live TV service you pay for has an app in your TV's store, and it's the same app as on other platforms rather than a cut-down version.
- The TV is recent enough to be inside its maker's update window.
- Menus and channel changes feel quick. If they lag now, they'll lag more after the next few app updates.
- The TV is wired to the router, or the Wi-Fi is strong where it sits.
The weak spot is processing power. TV makers put modest chips in all but their flagship sets, and channel guides with hundreds of channels are exactly the kind of thing that slows a cheap TV down. If the guide stutters, a $50 stick usually feels faster than the $800 TV it's plugged into.
One more point in the TV's favour: fewer remotes and fewer inputs. For a household where someone just wants to press one button and see the news, an extra box on another HDMI input can be the thing that breaks the routine. If you do add one, turn on HDMI-CEC (Samsung calls it Anynet+, LG calls it SimpLink) so the box's remote can switch the TV on and control the volume.
When a stick is the right call
A stick is the answer for older TVs, second rooms, a parent's house and travel. It plugs into HDMI, takes power from USB or a wall adapter, and gives an old TV a current app store.
Two things to know in 2026. Amazon's newer Fire TV Sticks, including the 3rd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K ($59.99), run Vega OS rather than Android. They run Amazon Appstore apps only, with no way to install anything else, and Amazon discontinued the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and 4K Plus on 30 September 2026. If you use any player app that isn't in the Appstore, check our Vega OS vs Fire OS guide first.
The second is heat and Wi-Fi. Sticks sit behind the TV, where both are worst. Use the HDMI extender in the box, and add an Ethernet adapter if the TV is far from the router.
When a set-top box earns its price
A proper box makes sense on the TV that matters most, especially for sport. The reasons are practical, not glamorous:
- A built-in Ethernet port. The single biggest cause of live TV buffering is Wi-Fi. A wire fixes it.
- More memory. Large guides, multiview and fast channel changes all lean on RAM. Three to four gigabytes is the comfortable range in 2026.
- Storage. 32 GB stops the "storage full" warnings that eventually slow sticks down.
- Better audio handling. Boxes tend to pass surround sound to a soundbar or receiver more reliably.
What about the box your cable or fibre company offers? Operator boxes like Xfinity's or Verizon Fios TV's run that provider's own TV service well, often with a cloud DVR, but they're locked to it and usually come with a monthly equipment fee. Over five years, a small monthly rental easily costs more than buying a retail box outright, so if your provider's app is available on retail devices, compare both before you accept the rental.
Google's platform has its own 2026 change: developer verification for apps installed outside Google Play on certified Android devices, starting in a few countries this year and planned more widely from 2027. Mainstream Play Store apps are unaffected. Our explainer on Android's new sideloading rules covers what it means for player apps. Our older comparison of boxes, sticks and smart TVs goes deeper on Ethernet and storage.
Boxes to avoid
Search "IPTV set top box" on a marketplace and many of the cheapest results are unbranded Android boxes sold "fully loaded" or with a year of channels included. Skip them. They usually run uncertified Android, often lack the Widevine L1 protection that licensed apps need for HD, rarely get security updates, and the "included" channels come from unlicensed services that can vanish overnight.
A branded box from Google, Apple, Amazon, Roku, Walmart's onn or Nvidia costs about the same, runs every licensed live TV app and keeps getting updates.
Decide in one minute
| Your TV | Your viewing | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| 2024+ Samsung, 2022+ LG, recent Google TV set | One or two live TV apps | Use the TV's apps; wire it if you can |
| Same, but menus lag or guide stutters | Lots of live TV or sport | Add a box with Ethernet |
| Five or more years old | Anything | Add a stick or box; don't rely on its store |
| Second TV, bedroom, holiday home | Occasional | A $50-$60 stick |
| Main TV, sport every weekend | Multiple screens, big guides | A $100-$150 box, wired |
Quick answers
Do I need a set-top box for IPTV? Not always. A recent smart TV with your service's app works fine. A box or stick helps when the TV is older, slow or no longer updated, or when you want Ethernet and more memory for live TV.
Is a set-top box better than a streaming stick? For the main TV, usually yes: most boxes have built-in Ethernet, more memory and more storage. For second TVs and travel, a stick is cheaper and plenty.
How long do smart TV apps keep working? It depends on the maker. Samsung promises seven years of Tizen updates for 2024 and newer TVs, LG four upgrades over five years for 2022 and newer models, and Hisense up to eight years for some 2025 VIDAA models.
What does a streaming device cost per year? Roughly $12-$30 a year for most sticks and boxes once you spread the price over their useful life, which is small next to a live TV subscription.
Can I install any app on a new Fire TV Stick? Not on the Vega OS models, such as the 3rd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K. They only run Amazon Appstore apps. Older Fire OS models can still install apps from outside the store.
Are cheap Android IPTV boxes worth it? No. Unbranded boxes often lack Google certification and the copy protection licensed apps need for HD, rarely get security updates, and are often sold with unlicensed channels.
Which box is best for live TV in 2026? For most households, a Google TV-based box with Ethernet, such as the Google TV Streamer, or an Apple TV 4K in iPhone homes. Check current prices, as several rose in 2026.
Device prices changed several times in 2026 and vary by retailer. Update commitments are as published by each manufacturer and may be revised; Hisense's figure is a maximum, and Amazon's covers security updates only. Cost-per-year figures are our estimates. Checked October 2026.
