Pakistani TV Channels in the US: Geo, ARY and Hum, Legally

Short answer: for most Pakistani families in the US, the best "IPTV" for Pakistani channels costs nothing. Geo, ARY and Hum put their dramas on their official YouTube channels, usually with English subtitles, and the main news channels stream live there too. Pay only for what's left: a live bundle such as Sling's Urdu packages if you want channels running all day, ARY's own ARY ZAP app for ARY live, and a cricket service for Pakistan matches. The cheap "4,000 Pakistani and Indian channels" boxes are the one option to skip.

Start with what your family actually watches

Pakistani television in a US household usually means three things: the evening drama, the news, and cricket. They come from different places, so it's worth separating them before you pay anyone.

Most households find the first two rows cover 80 percent of their viewing. That changes the question from "which IPTV service?" to "do we need anything paid at all?"

The free layer: official YouTube and live news

Pakistan's big entertainment networks treat YouTube as a main distribution channel, not an afterthought. Hum TV, ARY Digital and Geo Entertainment (whose YouTube presence runs under the Har Pal Geo name) upload full drama episodes, typically within a day of the Pakistani broadcast and often with English subtitles. Some popular serials get extra uploads with teasers, behind-the-scenes clips and compilations.

For news, it's even simpler. Most Pakistani news channels run continuous official live streams on YouTube, and many also stream live on their own websites. Geo News, ARY News, Dunya News, Express News and Samaa are the ones families usually ask for.

Three things to know:

• Use the verified channels. Re-uploads by random accounts get taken down mid-serial. The official channel will still be there next week.
• Ads are the price. Expect several breaks per episode. YouTube Premium removes them, which some families find cheaper than a TV bundle.
• Some content is region-locked. Cricket and some imported programmes on Pakistani channels can be blocked outside Pakistan. That's a rights issue, not a fault.

Every streaming stick and smart TV has a YouTube app, so this layer works on whatever you already own.

Broadcaster apps: ARY ZAP, Geo and PTV

ARY ZAP is ARY Digital Network's own streaming app. It carries ARY's channels live, including ARY Digital and ARY News, with catch-up and an on-demand drama library. It's sold internationally, and pricing depends on the country and the app store you buy through, so check the purchase screen rather than a third-party price list.

Geo streams its channels through its official websites and apps. Geo News is usually viewable abroad; Geo Super, the sports channel, is the one most likely to be restricted because of cricket rights.

PTV, the state broadcaster, offers its channels through the PTV Flix app and its website. Older relatives often want PTV Home and PTV News, and this is the official place to find them. Availability of individual live channels outside Pakistan varies.

Broadcaster apps have one big advantage over a bundle: you get that network's full archive. Their drawback is that each covers one network, so a family that watches Hum, ARY and Geo would need several apps.

A small caution on app names: searching the app stores for "Pakistani TV" turns up dozens of unofficial apps using channel logos. Check the publisher name matches the broadcaster before installing.

Sling's Urdu packages and other bundles

If you want something that behaves like cable, with channels you can leave running and a programme guide, the main licensed option is Sling TV's international service. Sling groups its South Asian channels into Desi packages by language, and Urdu is one of those groups.

The contents are the thing to check. Which Pakistani networks Sling carries has changed over the years as distribution deals came and went, and package names and prices change too. Before subscribing, open Sling's Urdu package page and look for the specific channels you want by name, such as Geo Entertainment, Geo News, ARY Digital, Hum TV or Express. If your must-have channel isn't listed, the bundle isn't for you.

Two other routes are worth a look:

• YuppTV, best known for Indian regional channels, has carried some Pakistani channels and Urdu content. Check its current line-up for your channels.
• Combined Indian and Pakistani households sometimes get more value from a Desi bundle that covers Hindi and Urdu together. Our guide to Indian TV in the US covers the Hindi side.

Start month-to-month. Prepaying a year is cheaper only once you know the channels you care about are really there, and stay there.

Cricket: PSL and Pakistan matches

Cricket is where many families end up tempted by unlicensed streams, because it's spread across rights holders and changes every series.

The rules of thumb for the US:

• Willow is the core US cricket service and carries a large share of international series. It sells directly for $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and is also available through some TV providers.
• Pakistan Super League US rights are sold per season. Check the PSL's announced broadcast partners before the tournament starts rather than assuming last year's home.
• ICC events, including World Cups, are sold as a package and have their own US rights holder each cycle.
• Bilateral series hosted by Pakistan are sold by the PCB, and the US partner can differ from the one for a series Pakistan plays away.

Our cricket in the USA guide keeps the current picture. One firm piece of advice: don't pay a year in advance anywhere for cricket alone until you've checked who has the next big series.

What a full set-up costs

Compare that with the "lifetime" boxes sold at community events for a few hundred dollars. The free and cheap licensed routes above don't stop working when a seller's server is shut down, and they don't need a new box every two years.

Getting it onto the TV for parents

A common reason for this search is parents visiting or living with you. The best set-up is the one they can operate alone.

• One device, one home row. Put YouTube, the cricket app and any paid app side by side on the home screen of a Roku, Fire TV or Google TV device.
• Subscribe to the drama channels on their profile. New episodes then appear on the YouTube home screen without searching.
• Use voice search. Saying "Hum TV" or "Geo News" into the remote works on most current devices and is easier than typing.
• Wire it if you can. An Ethernet cable stops live news freezing at prime time.

Why the "all channels" boxes aren't worth it

Search results for "IPTV Pakistani channels" are full of sellers promising every Pakistani and Indian channel, including PTV Sports and Geo Super, for a small monthly or one-off fee. They aren't licensed to sell those channels in the US, and the networks actively enforce against them.

In practice that means sport channels that fail during big matches, services that disappear without refunds, and boxes running unknown software on your home network. With dramas and news available free from the broadcasters themselves, the trade is a poor one. Our guide to spotting an IPTV scam lists the warning signs.
