IPTV on a MAG Box: Models, Portal Setup and Limits

Short answer: a MAG box is a Linux set-top box from Infomir built to do one job: connect to an operator's IPTV middleware portal. That makes it simple and stable, but it cannot install ordinary apps, and it only works if your provider actually supports MAG portals, so check that before buying one.

What a MAG box actually is

Infomir, the company behind MAG, has built set-top boxes for IPTV operators for more than fifteen years. Hotels, ISPs and telecoms firms deploy them because they are cheap, remote-manageable and predictable.

It runs Linux, not Android. There is no Google Play and no way to install arbitrary apps. The interface you see comes from your provider's middleware.

It uses a portal. Rather than loading a playlist, you enter a portal address. The box presents its MAC address, and the operator's middleware, typically Infomir's own Ministra TV platform or a compatible system, decides which channels you get.

That makes it locked to the operator. Change providers and you enter a new portal; the box stays the same.

It boots straight into television. There is no home screen of apps to navigate. Switch on and the provider's channel list or guide appears, which is exactly what many operators and their customers want.

Current and recent MAG models

Model Resolution Chip RAM / storage Wi-Fi
MAG544 4K HDR Amlogic S905Y4-B 1 GB / 4 GB No (Ethernet only)
MAG544w3 4K HDR Amlogic S905Y4-B 1 GB / 4 GB Dual-band built in
MAG540 / 540w3 4K Earlier chip Lower w3 version only
MAG524 / 520 4K Earlier chip Lower w3 versions only
MAG424 / 420 and older 4K or HD Older Lower Limited

The MAG544 has HDMI 2.1, a 100 Mbps Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, and decodes H.265 at 4K 60 fps. Infomir lists older models separately as discontinued, and they eventually stop getting firmware.

Setting one up with your provider's portal

Connect Ethernet first. It is the most reliable route, and the only one on the non-w3 models.

Find the MAC address on the sticker underneath the box or under Settings → Device info. Your provider registers it on their side.

Enter the portal URL. Settings → Servers → Portals. Type the address exactly as the provider gave it, save, and restart.

Wait for the portal to load. The provider's own menus replace the default screen. If you see "Loading portal" indefinitely, the URL or MAC registration is usually the problem.

Update firmware from the settings when the box offers it. Infomir's firmware update notes explain portal compatibility changes.

Set up more than one portal if needed. The settings hold two or more portal slots, so a household with two legitimate services can switch between them at boot without re-entering addresses.

Set the time zone. A wrong time zone shifts the programme guide by hours. It is under Settings → System settings, and is easy to overlook.

Where MAG boxes shine, and where they don't

Strengths. Very quick to channel-hop, simple for non-technical users, a proper remote with TV-style buttons, and stable for years because it only does one thing.

Limits. No Netflix, no broadcaster apps, no general player apps. A MAG box is a companion to a smart TV or streaming stick, not a replacement.

Modest hardware. 1 GB of RAM is fine for the middleware it was designed for, but not for heavy interfaces.

Wi-Fi is optional. If the box has to sit far from the router and you do not have the w3 model, you will need a cable or powerline adapter.

Low power, low fuss. A MAG box draws only a few watts, has no fan, and needs no attention between firmware updates. For a relative who just wants channels, that simplicity is a genuine advantage over any Android device.

MAG box vs Android box vs app

Some Android player apps imitate the MAG portal login, emulating the MAC address. That is a provider-by-provider question; our best IPTV box guide compares the device types more broadly, and Formuler covers the Android alternative many former MAG users choose.

A smart TV app can replace a MAG box for some operators that offer both. If yours does, compare the two before buying hardware; the app saves a box and a remote, while the MAG box is usually quicker and more consistent.

Buying a MAG box safely

Buy from an authorised seller. Infomir lists official distributors. Genuine boxes carry the Infomir name and a real MAC on the sticker.

Beware "preloaded" listings. A MAG box sold with a portal already set up is selling access to someone else's service, which is frequently unlicensed.

Check model age. Older boxes are cheap second-hand but may lack HEVC or current firmware, and some operators no longer support them.

Know what your provider supports. Ask them directly whether they support MAG portals and which models.

Look up the MAC prefix. Genuine Infomir boxes use MAC addresses beginning with the company's registered prefix, which authorised sellers can confirm. Some clone boxes use copied or altered addresses, which also causes portal problems.

A MAG box is a legitimate piece of hardware used by licensed operators worldwide. The portal is what determines legality.

A licensed operator will have a business identity, terms and conditions, and a way to cancel.

Portals sold through messaging apps or resellers offering thousands of premium channels cheaply are almost always unlicensed. In the UK and EU, people selling such access have been prosecuted, and subscribers risk losing money when the service disappears.

Troubleshooting a MAG box

Channels freeze or buffer. Check the cable first, then the provider. MAG boxes have 100 Mbps Ethernet, which is ample for live TV, so persistent buffering is usually the source or your broadband rather than the box.

"Portal not available" after an update. Some firmware updates change portal compatibility. Infomir has published firmware that lets MAG540 and MAG544 owners access older Ministra portal versions; check its update notes, and ask your provider which firmware they support.

The remote stops working. Replace the batteries, then re-pair if your remote is a Bluetooth model. Infrared remotes need a clear line of sight to the front of the box.

Picture looks wrong. Settings → Video lets you set the output resolution and frame rate. Match your television's native resolution and choose 50 Hz for UK and European broadcasts.

Factory reset. Hold the menu button during power-up to reach the boot menu, or use Settings → Reset. You will need to re-enter the portal URL.

Using the MAG remote and mobile app

The MAG remote is designed for IPTV rather than general streaming, which is part of the appeal.

Dedicated buttons for the guide, channel up and down, and a number pad make channel surfing feel like traditional television.

Programmable TV buttons on newer remotes can control your television's power and volume.

Infomir's mobile app can act as a remote on some models, helpful for typing portal addresses or searching.

Replacement remotes are cheap, but buy the model that matches your box, because newer Bluetooth remotes do not work with older infrared-only units.

Quick answers

What is a MAG box? A Linux-based IPTV set-top box made by Infomir that connects to an operator's middleware portal rather than running general apps.

What is the newest MAG box? The MAG544 and MAG544w3, 4K HDR models on an Amlogic S905Y4-B chip. The w3 version adds dual-band Wi-Fi.

How do I add a portal to a MAG box? Go to Settings, then Servers, then Portals, enter the portal URL from your provider, save and restart.

Can I install apps on a MAG box? No. It does not have Google Play or a general app store. Features come from the operator's portal.

Why is my MAG box stuck on loading portal? Usually the portal URL is wrong or your MAC address has not been registered by the provider.

Can a MAG box use an M3U playlist? Not as its main method. MAG boxes are designed for portal-based middleware; for M3U playlists, an Android TV device is easier.

Is a MAG box legal? Yes. The hardware is legal and widely used by licensed operators. Unlicensed portals are not.
