Short answer: you can't legally buy TF1, France 2, M6 or Canal+ as live channels in the US. They're licensed for France, and their own apps lock live TV to French and EU viewers. What you can get is better than most people expect: TV5MONDEplus streams thousands of hours of francophone TV free in the US, France 24 runs a free 24-hour live stream, and the paid TV5MONDE USA channel adds French drama and films on US pay-TV. For sport, Ligue 1 is on beIN SPORTS. The "IPTV France" sellers with a 24-hour trial and Canal+ for a few euros a month aren't licensed, whatever their pages say.
At a glance
French-language TV in the US
| Free, on demand | TV5MONDEplus: 7,000+ hours, 217 countries |
| Free, live news | France 24 in French and English |
| Paid channel | TV5MONDE USA via pay-TV and streaming partners |
| Ligue 1 | beIN SPORTS (via Fubo, some Sling plans, Fanatiz) |
| Not sold in the US | TF1, France 2, M6, Canal+ live |
Which French channels can you actually get?
The answer depends on who made the channel and who it was made for. France's big domestic networks sell their programmes, not their channels, abroad. The channels built for international audiences are the ones you can watch here.
| Channel or service | Made for | In the US? |
|---|---|---|
| TV5MONDE, TV5MONDEplus | Francophone viewers worldwide | Yes: free app, plus a paid US channel |
| France 24 | International news audience | Yes, free live |
| beIN SPORTS | US sports viewers | Yes, Ligue 1 among others |
| TF1, France 2, France 3, M6 | France | Not live; some shows on demand via other services |
| Canal+ | France and Canal+ territories | No; its originals sometimes land on US streamers |
So the practical US set-up is TV5MONDE for entertainment, France 24 for news, beIN for football, and US streamers for the occasional French hit. That covers far more than it sounds.
TV5MONDEplus: the free one most people miss
TV5MONDEplus is TV5MONDE's free streaming platform, and it's the best starting point for anyone after French-language TV in the US.
- Free. Its app listing promises more than 7,000 hours of programmes free of charge. Creating an account is optional and adds features such as favourites.
- Wide reach. It's available in 217 countries and territories, including the US, as of an August 2024 expansion.
- Francophone, not just French. Films, series, documentaries, magazines, kids' and learning programmes from broadcasters in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and Africa.
- Subtitles in six languages, which makes it useful for mixed households and learners.
Devices: phones, tablets, computers and smart TVs, and in the US it's built into Comcast's Xfinity X1, Xfinity Flex, Xumo Stream Box and Xumo TVs.
One catch: the app notes that some content in the US is reserved for TV5MONDE subscribers, meaning people who pay for the TV5MONDE USA channel through a provider. The free catalogue is still large.
TV5MONDE USA, the paid channel
TV5MONDE USA is the premium US version of TV5MONDE, with French and francophone films, drama and entertainment, many with English subtitles. It's sold through US pay-TV and streaming partners as an add-on rather than directly.
The best-documented streaming route has been Sling TV. When Sling added it in 2017, the TV5MONDE add-on cost $15 a month on top of a Sling subscription and included TV5MONDE USA, TV5MONDE Style, TiVi5Monde (for kids), TV5MONDE Info and an on-demand cinema service. That's nine years ago; check Sling's current international page for the package name and price before subscribing. Our Sling packages guide explains how base plans and add-ons combine.
If you have cable or satellite, ask whether TV5MONDE USA is in its international tier; several US providers have carried it.
Is it worth paying? If you mostly want films and drama in French, yes, it's the closest legal thing to a French entertainment channel. If you mainly want news and the odd series, TV5MONDEplus and France 24 already cover you for free.
France 24 and other free news
France 24, France's international news channel, streams live free on its website and official YouTube channels, separately in French and in English (and in Arabic and Spanish). It's one of the easiest channels in the world to watch legally.
Other free French-language news worth knowing:
- TV5MONDE's news, which it publishes on its website and official YouTube channel, drawing on partner broadcasters across the francophone world.
- Official YouTube channels of French broadcasters, which post news segments, clips and some programmes. Live domestic channels on those accounts are usually geo-blocked outside France.
- Free ad-supported TV services on smart TVs sometimes include French-language channels. Line-ups change; see our FAST channels explainer.
TF1+, france.tv, M6+ and Canal+ from the US
France's domestic streaming apps are excellent and mostly free in France. From the US, they mostly won't play live TV.
The reason is rights. TF1 or France Télévisions buy films, series and sport for France only. Their apps check where you are and restrict live channels and much of the catalogue to France, or to EU residents temporarily travelling in the EU under EU portability rules. A US address doesn't qualify.
Two legitimate workarounds exist:
- Look for the show, not the channel. French series and Canal+ originals regularly get licensed to US services such as Netflix, Prime Video, MHz Choice or HBO Max. Search the title before assuming it's unavailable.
- If you live in France and are visiting the US, check your own subscription's travel rules. Outside the EU, most French services don't promise to work.
Using a VPN to appear French breaks those services' terms, and they increasingly detect it.
French sport: Ligue 1, Roland-Garros, the Tour
| Event | US home | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ligue 1 | beIN SPORTS | Through Fubo, some Sling plans or Fanatiz |
| French clubs in Europe | Paramount+ | Champions League and Europa League, 2026-27 |
| Roland-Garros | TNT Sports | Under its multi-year deal from 2025 |
| Tour de France | NBC and Peacock | Every stage streams on Peacock |
All of these are in English, though beIN has offered Spanish-language feeds for some matches. French-language commentary of French sport isn't generally sold in the US. Our soccer streaming overview has the rest of the football picture.
Rugby's Top 14 is the gap: its US rights have moved around, so check the league's current partner list before the season.
For French learners and kids
A lot of people searching for French channels are learning the language or raising bilingual kids. For them, the free options are genuinely better than paid ones.
- TV5MONDEplus has subtitles in six languages and plenty of programming aimed at learners.
- TiVi5MONDE, TV5MONDE's children's service, carries French-language cartoons and kids' shows.
- France 24 runs parallel French and English channels, so you can follow the same day's stories in both languages.
- On Netflix and other US streamers, French originals let you set French audio with French subtitles.
The "IPTV France" sellers
The pages ranking for this keyword are mostly sellers on lookalike domains: three-, six- and twelve-month plans priced in euros, a 24-hour free trial, "Canal+, beIN and RMC Sport included," and payment by crypto, PayPal "friends and family" or bank transfer. Their own pages contradict themselves on channel counts and device limits. None of them are licensed. Canal+ and beIN don't sell their channels to resellers like this.
The risks are practical: streams cut during big matches, accounts that vanish with the annual fee, and no consumer protection. Our guides to spotting an IPTV scam and which licensed services offer free trials are worth a read before paying anyone.
The honest cost of French TV in the US is low: free for TV5MONDEplus and France 24, plus a TV5MONDE add-on if you want the premium channel, and a beIN route for Ligue 1.
