Short answer: BuzzTV makes Android streaming boxes with its own live-TV software, the BuzzTV app, built to play a service or playlist from a provider you choose. The catch is that most BuzzTV models run an Android build without Google TV certification, so you give up the full Play Store and some licensed apps in exchange for a TV-style interface.

What BuzzTV is
BuzzTV is a Canadian company that has sold IPTV-focused streaming boxes since the mid-2010s, mostly through specialist retailers in North America and the UK.
The hardware is Android. Boxes use Amlogic chips and run Android, with a customised launcher and BuzzTV's remote.
The key feature is the software. The BuzzTV app provides a cable-style guide, recording to storage (PVR), timeshift for pausing and rewinding live TV, and multiview on higher-end models.
It contains no channels. Like other player software, it plays what a provider supplies. That keeps the box itself legitimate, and means the legality depends on the source.
It is aimed at a specific buyer. BuzzTV's customers tend to be people who want a cable-box experience from an internet-delivered service: a guide on switch-on, a remote with channel buttons, and recording. If that is you, the dedicated software is a real advantage over a general-purpose stick.
The current BuzzTV range
| Model | System | Chip | RAM / storage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B5 | Android 11 | Amlogic S905W2 | 2 GB / 16 GB | Entry 4K box, BuzzTV 5 app with PVR |
| E5 / E5-SE | Android | Amlogic | Varies | Essentials range, budget |
| P6 PowerStation | Android | Higher-end Amlogic | More RAM | Flagship, multiview |
| G-Series | Android | Varies | Varies | Newer line, check the spec sheet |
| L1 Linux Player | Linux | Varies | Varies | Portal-style box, similar idea to MAG |
Older XRS models (XRS 4000, 4500, 4900) are still common second-hand. They run older Android versions and are worth checking for security updates before relying on them.
Choosing between them comes down to RAM and features. Multiview and heavy recording want the P6's extra memory. For one television and a single provider, the B5 is enough.
The L1 Linux Player is the odd one out. It is a portal-style box closer in spirit to a MAG unit than to the Android range, aimed at providers who deliver middleware portals rather than playlists.
Setting one up
Connect Ethernet if you can. Every current BuzzTV box has a port, and live TV benefits most.
Run the setup wizard for network, time zone and display.
Open the BuzzTV app and add your provider's details: usually an M3U URL or Xtream-style login, plus an EPG URL for the guide.
Configure recording if you want PVR. Attach a USB drive or use the microSD slot, and choose it as the recording location.
Check firmware in the BuzzTV settings. BuzzTV pushes its own updates rather than through Google.
Set your time zone and guide offset carefully. A wrong time zone shifts the guide by hours, and some providers' EPG data needs a manual offset in the app's settings.
Configure the remote. BuzzTV remotes can be programmed to control the television's power and volume, which removes the need for a second remote.
The certification question
This is the point most reviews skip.
Google certification matters for licensed apps. Certified Google TV or Android TV devices get the full Play Store, Play Protect and Widevine L1 DRM, which licensed services use to decide whether to offer HD and 4K.
BuzzTV does not list certification for most of its range. In practice, some licensed services may be missing, limited to SD, or need a different app version.
Security updates come from BuzzTV, not Google. Check the model's update history before buying.
The practical answer for many people is to use a BuzzTV box for its IPTV app, and a certified stick or the TV's built-in apps for Netflix, iPlayer and sport. See our Android TV guide for more on certification.
Check before buying for a specific app. If a particular licensed service matters to you, search the model name plus the app on BuzzTV's support forum or the service's own device list before you order.
BuzzTV vs the alternatives
| Device | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| BuzzTV box | Polished live-TV app with PVR and timeshift | Certification and licensed-app support vary |
| Formuler | MyTVOnline app, some certified models | Similar trade-offs on older models |
| MAG box | Very simple portal-based setup | No general apps |
| Nvidia Shield / Google TV Streamer | Certified, full Play Store | Need a separate player app |
For a broader comparison, our best IPTV box guide covers the main device types.
Many people end up with two devices. A certified stick for mainstream apps and a dedicated IPTV box for the provider's channels is a common and sensible setup, and an HDMI switch or the TV's inputs make moving between them easy.
Buying one safely
Buy the box, not a service. A legitimate BuzzTV box is sold without channels. Listings that include a year of "channels" or a preconfigured portal are selling a third party's service, which is usually unlicensed.
Use authorised retailers. BuzzTV lists dealers on its website; grey-market units may have modified software.
Check the model year. Newer models have better HEVC support, more RAM and a more recent Android version.
Ask about warranty and support. BuzzTV offers phone and online support in North America. A unit bought abroad or second-hand may not be covered.
Budget for storage. If you want to record, add the cost of a decent USB drive or high-endurance microSD card; the internal storage is only enough for the system and apps.
Licensed vs unlicensed
The box is legal. Like any media player, it has lawful uses: operator IPTV services, your own recordings and lawful playlists.
Unlicensed channel services are not. Cheap packages of premium channels sold without rights holders' permission are illegal to sell in the UK, EU, US and Canada, and subscribers risk losing prepaid money or exposing payment details. Canadian courts have issued several injunctions against sellers of preloaded boxes.
A licensed provider is easy to recognise. It has a real business name, terms and conditions, visible customer service and a clear way to cancel. If a seller cannot tell you who actually runs the service, treat that as a warning.
The BuzzTV app, feature by feature
The software is the main reason people choose these boxes, so it is worth knowing what it does well.
Programme guide. A cable-style grid with channel groups and favourites, loaded from your provider's EPG URL.
Timeshift. Pause live TV, rewind a few minutes, and catch up to live again. Useful for sport, with the caveat that it needs storage and some RAM.
Recording (PVR). Record to USB or microSD, schedule from the guide and play back in the app. How much you can record depends on the storage you attach.
Multiview. Higher-end models can show several channels at once, handy for following several matches. It is demanding, so it is really a feature of the flagship boxes.
Parental controls. A PIN for adult channels or specific categories, set in the app's settings.
Troubleshooting
Guide shows no data. Check the EPG URL, then force a guide refresh from the app settings. Some providers only update the guide once a day.
Recordings fail. Format the USB drive in the box, and make sure it is fast enough; cheap flash drives struggle with HD recordings.
Buffering. Test with Ethernet. If it persists on a cable, the problem is usually the source or your broadband.
App crashes after an update. Clear the app's cache under Android settings. If that fails, clear data and re-enter your provider's details.
Remote not responding. Re-pair it from the box's Bluetooth settings, or replace the batteries.
