IP TV in India: Airtel IPTV, JioTV+, Tata Play and BSNL Compared

If you live in India and someone mentions "IP TV", they almost always mean one thing now: live TV channels delivered over your home fibre connection instead of a dish on the roof. That market barely existed five years ago. Since 2025, Airtel and Jio have both pushed it hard, and it's starting to eat into DTH.

Short answer: IPTV in India means getting TV channels through your broadband provider: Airtel's IPTV plans (from ₹699 a month with 350 channels), JioTV+ on JioFiber and AirFiber (1,000+ channels), BSNL's fibre TV, or a local ISP. You need that provider's internet connection for it to work. The catch most people miss: none of these services works outside India, so they're no help to relatives abroad.

What IPTV means in India

Indian homes get TV four ways, and the terms get muddled:

  • Cable from a local operator (LCO), usually through a multi-system operator such as Hathway, GTPL or Den.
  • DTH satellite: Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV/d2h, Sun Direct, plus the free DD Free Dish.
  • OTT apps: JioHotstar, SonyLIV, ZEE5 and so on, over any internet connection.
  • IPTV: the same linear channels you'd get on DTH or cable, but delivered by your broadband provider over its own managed network, to a set-top box or an app on the TV.

The difference between IPTV and OTT is control. An IPTV provider runs the network end to end, so channels behave like broadcast TV: instant switching, a programme guide, channel numbers. OTT runs over the open internet and depends on whatever app you open.

India did have IPTV before. MTNL and BSNL ran small services in the late 2000s, and reference pages still describe that era. It never took off because fixed broadband was scarce. Fibre to the home changed that, and from 2025 the telecom companies started selling TV as part of the broadband bill.

The providers compared

Provider How you get it Channels Price guide
Airtel IPTV Airtel Wi-Fi (fibre) plan 350 + 26-29 OTT apps ₹699-₹3,999/mo incl. internet (2025 launch)
JioTV+ (Jio) JioFiber or AirFiber; set-top box or app 1,000+ + 15+ OTT apps Bundled in Jio home plans
BSNL fibre TV BSNL FTTH, in launched circles Several hundred (per 2025 launch) Included for FTTH users at launch
Local ISPs (e.g. TriplePlay, Delhi NCR) That ISP's broadband Varies Low add-on prices, some 7-day catch-up
Tata Play (not IPTV) DTH dish, or "Smart" app with no dish 600+ on DTH Pack-based, TRAI-regulated
DD Free Dish (not IPTV) Free satellite, one-time dish Free-to-air only Free

Figures are from Airtel's March 2025 launch announcement, Jio's JioTV+ and AirFiber pages, and Tata Play's site, checked October 2026. Telecom plans in India change often, so treat prices as a guide.

Airtel IPTV

Airtel launched IPTV on 26 March 2025 across roughly 2,000 cities, with Delhi, Rajasthan, Assam and the North-East following shortly after. It's sold only as part of an Airtel Wi-Fi plan, not on its own.

Plan (2025) Speed TV channels OTT apps
₹699 40 Mbps 350 26
₹899 100 Mbps 350 26
₹1,099 200 Mbps 350 28 (adds Apple TV+, Prime Video)
₹1,599 300 Mbps 350 29 (adds Netflix)
₹3,999 1 Gbps 350 29

The pitch is simple: one bill for internet, live TV and a stack of apps including SonyLIV and ZEE5. Airtel offered up to 30 days free at launch through the Airtel Thanks app. Note that the channel count is the same on every tier; you're paying for speed and the premium apps.

Airtel also still runs Airtel Digital TV, its DTH business, with about 17 million subscribers in March 2025. In February 2025 Airtel confirmed talks about combining that business with Tata Play. We couldn't confirm a completed deal as of this check, so watch for news if you're on either.

JioTV+ on JioFiber and AirFiber

Jio's TV comes through JioTV+, which is pre-installed on the Jio set-top box and can also be installed on Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV devices. You sign in with your registered Jio mobile number, and it only works with an active JioFiber or JioAirFiber connection.

Jio lists 1,000+ digital channels in 15+ languages, catch-up TV, a kids-safe section and single sign-on for 15+ OTT apps, including JioHotstar, SonyLIV, ZEE5, Sun NXT, hoichoi, Prime Video, ShemarooMe and ETV Win. AirFiber is Jio's fixed-wireless option for areas without fibre; it comes with a 4K set-top box and router on annual plans.

Two practical notes. The channel count is higher than Airtel's, but it includes many small and regional channels; check that your must-have channels are there rather than comparing totals. And JioHotstar is the home of Star and Colors content in India, which matters if you watch those networks.

Tata Play, BSNL and local ISPs

Tata Play is India's biggest pay DTH provider, with about 17.9 million subscribers in March 2025. It isn't IPTV, but it now sells a dish-free Tata Play Smart option that streams through an app over your internet, and Tata Play Binge, which bundles OTT apps alongside DTH. For a household that can't or won't switch broadband, that's the nearest equivalent.

BSNL announced fibre-based live TV for its FTTH customers in 2025, starting in a few telecom circles. Availability depends heavily on your circle, so check with BSNL directly.

Local ISPs are worth a look in big cities. TriplePlay in Delhi NCR, for example, sells IPTV with live channels and 7-day catch-up at low add-on prices. These are licensed distributors operating in a limited area. Ask the ISP whether it's registered as a distribution platform before signing up.

IPTV or DTH: which to keep

IPTV (fibre) DTH (dish)
Rain fade No Yes, in heavy monsoon rain
Power or internet cut TV goes too Works on inverter, no internet needed
Catch-up and apps Built in Only on hybrid boxes like Binge
Extra TVs App on smart TVs, often cheap Multi-room connection
Billing One bill with broadband Separate recharge

If you already pay for Airtel or Jio fibre and mostly watch a handful of channels plus apps, IPTV usually saves you the DTH recharge entirely. If your area has frequent power or internet cuts, or older relatives rely on the TV during outages, keeping DTH (or DD Free Dish as a free backup) makes sense.

Who regulates it

IPTV providers in India are distribution platform operators, like DTH and cable companies. They register with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) sets the tariff framework: broadcasters declare a maximum retail price for each pay channel, and distributors must offer channels à la carte as well as in packs. That's why your IPTV or DTH bill shows individual channel prices.

It's also how you tell a legitimate Indian IPTV service from a grey one. Airtel, Jio, BSNL and registered local ISPs carry channels under these rules. An app offering all of India's pay channels for a few hundred rupees a year, outside any operator, isn't covered by them.

Why it won't work from the US

Every service in this article is licensed for India only. JioTV+ and Airtel's IPTV need the provider's own connection; broadcaster apps such as ShemarooMe show a "not valid in this region" message when you sign in from abroad. Channel rights outside India are sold separately, country by country.

That's why family overseas use different services. In the US, Indian channels come through Sling's Desi packs, YuppTV, DISH and Xfinity add-ons, and US versions of apps like ZEE5 and SonyLIV. Our guides to where each Indian channel streams in the US and Indian TV in the USA by language cover that side. Sellers advertising "Indian IPTV for NRIs" with every Indian channel aren't using any of the licensed platforms above; this explainer covers what they actually sell.

Using a VPN to make an Indian subscription work from abroad breaks the providers' terms, and many block it. Our IPTV and VPNs piece explains what a VPN legitimately does and doesn't do.
