Indian TV for Visiting Parents in the USA: Simplest Setup

Short answer: for parents visiting from India, the simplest licensed setup is one live Indian service on a Roku or Google TV device, billed monthly and cancelled when they fly home. For Hindi speakers that's usually a Sling Desi pack (Desi Binge Plus was $10 for the first month and $15 after in Sling's 2025 offer); for Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam, Sling's Dakshin Flex at $10 or a YuppTV language pack. The catch most families hit on day one: the subscriptions your parents pay for in India usually won't play in the US, because Indian apps license by country and JioHotstar isn't offered here at all.

Before they land: three questions

A five-minute phone call before the flight saves a frustrating first week. Ask:

  1. Which serials are they following right now, and on which channel? Write down the channel names, such as Star Plus, Zee TV, Sun TV, Star Maa or Asianet. This decides the service.
  2. Which news channel do they watch, and do they want religious programming? Both are often free on official YouTube channels.
  3. Is anyone a cricket fan? If so, choose a pack that includes Willow so you don't pay twice.

Then check the network behind each serial. Indian channels belong to a few big groups (JioStar, Zee, Sony, Sun) that license separately in the US, so one serial can be easy to find and another impossible. Our guide to Indian TV in the US by language and budget maps the networks to services.

Why their India subscriptions probably won't work

Many parents arrive expecting to sign in to the same apps they use at home. Usually that doesn't work, and it's worth explaining before they're disappointed:

  • JioHotstar isn't offered in the US. Star serials appear in the US through Sling's packs and, title by title, on Disney+ and Hulu.
  • ZEE5, SonyLIV and Sun NXT sell separate plans by country, with different catalogues and prices. An India plan is priced for India and generally licensed for viewing there.
  • DTH apps from Indian satellite and cable operators are generally limited to India.

Using a VPN to make an India account work in the US breaks those services' terms, and accounts get blocked, often mid-serial. The US versions are straightforward to sign up for, and usually only needed for the length of the visit.

Choosing the one service

If they mainly watch Start with Published price Includes
Hindi serials and news Sling Desi Binge Plus $10 first month, then $15 (2025) SonyLIV, Disney Star on demand, Willow HD
Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam (Star channels) Sling Dakshin Flex $10/month (2025) Star Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet, Willow HD
Sun TV, Gemini, Surya, Udaya Sling Dakshin pack From $20/month at 2023 launch Sun Group channels
Regional channels not above YuppTV language pack Check US price Live channels with catch-up
Zee serials only ZEE5 Check US price On demand, same-day episodes

One service is the goal. A second app means a second menu, a second sign-in and a second thing to explain, and it's the most common reason parents stop using the TV and go back to their phones. Only add one if a must-watch serial is missing. For South Indian networks, see our channel-by-channel guide.

The device and the remote

Roku is the easiest choice for most parents. The home screen is a plain grid, the remote has few buttons, and voice search on the voice remote recognises channel names reasonably well. Google TV is a close second and better if you need an unusual regional app. If your TV already runs Roku or Google TV, you don't need anything extra.

A few settings make a real difference:

  • Pin the Indian service first and move everything else off the top row.
  • Turn off auto-playing previews on the home screen; they confuse people who aren't used to them.
  • Volume levelling. Many Roku devices have a volume mode that evens out loud adverts, and Google TV sets have similar audio settings. Indian channels' advert breaks can be much louder than programmes.
  • Captions on for English programmes if they help.
  • Use the TV remote's input button sparingly: tape a small label on the right HDMI input if the TV has several.

Fit the TV to their day, not India's

This is the part people don't expect. India's evening serials arrive in the US morning, and parents on Indian body-clock time for the first week may be up at 4 a.m. anyway.

Serial airs in India US Eastern (until Nov 1, 2026) US Eastern (from Nov 1) US Pacific (until Nov 1)
7:30 p.m. 10:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 7:00 a.m.
8:30 p.m. 11:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m.
9:30 p.m. Noon 11:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m.

For many parents, mid-morning live viewing while the family is at work or school is ideal. If they'd rather watch in the evening with everyone, show them the service's catch-up or on-demand section once, with the serial already saved to "My List" or favourites. Our catch-up TV explainer covers how long episodes stay available.

Setting it up, step by step

  1. Sign up from your account, on your card, a few days before they arrive. Use monthly billing.
  2. Install the app on the TV and sign in by code from your phone.
  3. Add favourites: their three or four channels, in the order they'd flick through them.
  4. Save their serials to the on-demand list.
  5. Add YouTube and subscribe to their news channel and any devotional channel, such as live aarti or kirtan streams from temples and gurdwaras.
  6. Do a dry run: turn everything off, then from cold switch on the TV, open the app and find a channel, the way they will.
  7. Write the cheat sheet below, in their language if that helps, and leave it by the remote.

A cheat sheet to leave by the TV

To do this Press
Turn on TV power, then wait for the home screen
Watch Indian TV Select the first app (e.g. Sling), then the channel
Change channel Up or down in the guide, then OK
Find a serial from earlier Open the app's On Demand or My List
Ask for something Hold the microphone button and say the channel name
Watch news on YouTube YouTube app, then Subscriptions, then Live
Something's wrong Hold power on the remote to restart, or call [name/number]

Fill in the actual app name and your number. It sounds basic; it's what stops the 7 a.m. phone call.

When they fly home

  • Cancel the same week. Set a calendar reminder for the departure date when you sign up. Monthly plans usually run to the end of the paid month.
  • Keep the device set up. Pinned apps and favourites survive cancelling; when they visit again, you just resubscribe.
  • Don't prepay a year for a three-month stay. Annual plans are cheaper per month but rarely refunded part-way. Sling's monthly billing exists precisely for this.

And be wary of offers aimed squarely at this situation: "all Indian channels for your parents" boxes or yearly codes sold on community groups and WhatsApp. They aren't licensed, often stop without warning, and an elderly relative is the person least equipped to troubleshoot one. Our IPTV scam guide lists the warning signs.

Quick answers

What is the easiest way for visiting parents to watch Indian TV in the US? One live Indian service on a Roku or Google TV device, billed monthly: usually a Sling Desi pack for Hindi, or Sling Dakshin Flex or YuppTV for South Indian languages.

Will my parents' Hotstar or ZEE5 India subscription work in the US? Usually not. JioHotstar isn't offered in the US, and ZEE5, SonyLIV and others sell separate country plans with different catalogues.

Should I pay monthly or yearly for a parents' visit? Monthly. Cancel when they leave and resubscribe on the next visit; annual plans are rarely refunded part-way.

Which device is simplest for elderly Indian parents? Roku, for its plain home screen and simple voice remote. Pin the Indian app first and turn off auto-playing previews.

What time do Indian serials air in the US? An 8:30 p.m. serial in India airs at 11 a.m. Eastern until Nov 1, 2026, and 10 a.m. Eastern after. Catch-up lets them watch later.

Can parents watch Indian news for free? Yes. Most Indian news channels stream live on their official YouTube channels, which play on any smart TV or streaming stick.

Do I need a VPN for my parents to watch Indian TV? No. Licensed US services carry Indian channels directly. Using a VPN to reach India-only apps breaks their terms and accounts get blocked.
