Short answer: on an older, Android-based Fire TV Stick such as the 4K Max, every major licensed live TV service installs from the Appstore, and YouTube TV is the best all-round pick at $82.99 a month. On the newer Vega OS sticks, including the third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Amazon launched on 30 September 2026, the list is shorter and less certain: Sling, Hulu and the free services are there, some apps run as cloud-streamed versions, and antenna and DVR apps such as HDHomeRun and Tablo aren't available at all. Check which stick you have before you pick a service.

First: is your stick Fire OS or Vega OS?
Amazon is moving its sticks from Fire OS, its version of Android, to Vega OS, its own Linux-based system. The difference decides which apps you can use, because Vega OS only runs apps built for it and published in the Amazon Appstore. There's no sideloading and no setting to change.
| Model | System | Status, Oct 2026 |

To check yours, go to Settings → My Fire TV → About. A stick you already own won't switch systems; Vega OS comes with new hardware. Our model-by-model guide to Vega OS and Fire OS goes into the transition in more depth.
Which licensed live TV apps run on which stick
On a Fire OS stick, the answer is simple: all the big US live TV services have Appstore apps. Vega OS is where it gets patchy. The Vega column below reflects what Amazon listed at launch and what reviewers reported between April and October 2026. "Check the Appstore" means we couldn't confirm a native app either way, not that it's missing.
| Service | Per month | Fire OS sticks | Vega OS sticks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sling TV | From $19.99 | Yes | Yes, listed by Amazon |
| Hulu + Live TV | $99.99 | Yes | Hulu app is native; confirm the Live TV tab |
| YouTube TV | $82.99 | Yes | Check the Appstore |
| DirecTV streaming | From $89.99 | Yes | Check the Appstore |
| Fubo | Varies by plan | Yes | Check the Appstore |
| Philo | $25 | Yes | Check the Appstore |
| Frndly TV | From $8.99 | Yes | Yes, as a cloud-hosted app |
| Peacock, Paramount+ | From $12.99 / from $8.99 | Yes | Yes, native |
| Pluto TV, Tubi | Free | Yes | Yes, listed by Amazon |
| The Roku Channel, Xfinity Stream, Fox Sports | Free / with subscription | Yes | Yes, as cloud-hosted apps |
| HDHomeRun, Tablo, Channels DVR | Antenna/DVR apps | Yes | No |
The practical rule: if you already pay for a service, search for it in the Appstore on the stick itself before you buy a Vega model, or before you choose a service for a Vega stick you already own. Apps arrive on Vega OS over time, so a "check" today may well be a yes in a few months.
"Cloud-hosted" apps, and why it matters
To fill gaps in its Vega catalogue, Amazon runs some apps on its own servers and streams the app's screen to your stick, rather than installing the app locally. Reporting in 2026 listed The Roku Channel, Frndly TV, Xfinity Stream, Fox Sports, MLB and NFL among them.
It works, but it's a step down. Menus can feel slower, picture quality depends on two internet streams rather than one, and reviewers have described the experience as worse than a native app. For a channel you dip into occasionally, that's fine. For the service you'll watch every evening, a native app, or a Fire OS stick, is better.
The best choice for each kind of viewer
You want everything, including local channels, and have a Fire OS stick: YouTube TV at $82.99. Locals in nearly every market, unlimited DVR and a clean Fire TV app. On a Vega stick, check it's in the Appstore first.
You want the safest bet on a Vega OS stick: Sling TV. It was on Amazon's launch list for Vega, and its $19.99 Essentials or Select plans are a cheap way to get ESPN or Fox News and NFL Network. Our guide to Sling's six packages explains which plan carries what.
Your family already pays for Disney+ and Hulu: Hulu + Live TV, which includes both, at $99.99. The Hulu app is native on Vega OS; confirm the live guide appears before relying on it.
No sports, tight budget: Philo at $25 on a Fire OS stick, or Frndly TV from $8.99, which runs on both kinds, cloud-hosted on Vega.
You use an antenna: a Fire OS stick, full stop. HDHomeRun, Tablo and Channels DVR don't exist on Vega OS, so a Vega stick can't show your network tuner's channels.
Free only: Pluto TV, Tubi and The Roku Channel work on every model.
Player apps and your own playlist
If you have a licensed playlist or an Xtream-style login from a service that supports third-party players, the device matters even more. On Fire OS sticks, the usual players are available from the Appstore or, for some, by sideloading. On Vega OS, VLC is the main option: it arrived in July 2026 with hardware decoding, and it plays an M3U but has no proper TV guide. Kodi, TiviMate and IPTV Smarters can't be installed. The full comparison is in our best IPTV player apps for Firestick guide.
Amazon's block on unlicensed apps
Many "best IPTV for Firestick" lists recommend services that sell thousands of channels for a few dollars a month, installed with a downloader app. Two things have changed. First, those instructions don't work at all on Vega OS sticks. Second, on every model, Amazon blocks apps it identifies as giving access to unlicensed content, both at installation and when the app is opened, and has said it doesn't make exceptions.
That's why this guide only covers licensed services. The cheap services aren't licensed for what they carry, they can vanish with a prepaid year, and a stick full of sideloaded apps is a common route for malware.
Buying a Fire TV Stick for live TV now
If live TV is the main job, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the one to get while it's still sold. It runs Fire OS, so every service app and antenna app installs, and it has the headroom for live sport in 4K. Our 4K Max setup and tuning guide covers the settings worth changing.
The new third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K is fine if your services are all confirmed on Vega OS and you never plan to use an antenna tuner or a playlist player. Early buyers in Germany gave it about 3.1 stars on Amazon, largely because of missing apps. If you're unsure, it's the riskier buy for live TV.
And if you don't need to stay with Amazon, Google TV and Roku devices carry every major live TV app today.
